Ability Fest
27th of October
Victoria Park, Brisbane
For the first time in the Sunshine state, the 5th edition of Ability Fest hit Brisbane/ Meanjin this weekend. Presented by the Dylan Alcott Foundation, Untitled Group & Triple J, the festival is an inclusive space for all music lovers where accessibility is at the forefront. I was lucky enough to go along for 27 Magazine for my first time in media at a major festival.
A view of the city skyline and surrounding jacaranda trees, along with a spring breeze set the atmosphere as pundits arrived at Victoria Park for a memorable night.
Boasting an incredible lineup of talented artists like Middle Kids, Asha Jefferies, King Stingray, Kita Alexander and Cub Sport, Brisbane was treated to a vibrant celebration of music and live performances.
Ability Fest delivered on its promise of creating an inclusive environment that all can access. Watching the crowd was infectious and the ease of everything was nothing short of miraculous. Whether a festival first timer or a seasoned veteran, the smiles around the crowd were affirmations of an incredibly fun night. I can’t help but feel that this is the future for music festivals in Australia.
As always, Ocean Alley were a highlight, playing their infectious melodies of psych-surf-rock. Their newest song ‘Tangerine’ is already clearly adored as it bounced across a singing crowd. Modern day classic ‘Confidence’ played under fireworks, winding down a festival to remember.
All involved, organisers, artists and guests, should be proud of creating such a successful event. The night will be close to my heart for a very long time.
No doubt I’ll be back next year if Ability Fest graces Brisbane again.
