Last night, Northcote Social was transformed into a haven for progressive metal enthusiasts. The venue was packed to the brim as three local bands, Sebastiside, LUNE, and The Omnific, took to the stage to deliver unforgettable performances.
Sebastiside kicked off the night with a set that showcased their technical prowess and infectious energy. The collaboration with some of the members of Wallet Inspector was a highlight, with Sebastian also teaching us about the intricacies of 11/16 timing. They concluded their set with a challenging piece, Polynomial, that they had deemed the “hardest one of the list,” but they executed it flawlessly, leaving the crowd in awe.
LUNE broke up the night with their growling vocals, launching into a high-energy performance that featured double kicks, higher keys, and a passionate crowd. Vocalist Nathanial Smith wasn’t afraid to open a circle pit part way between their set, and left the crowd engaged, excited, and ready for the headliner.
The Omnific closed out the night with a mesmerizing performance that was heavily focused on their technical instrumentation. The band’s use of four bass guitars created a powerful and unique sound, and had the crowd eagerly chanting “Bass Change! Bass Change!” when they switched. Drummer Jerome Lmatua’s energetic stage presence added to the overall spectacle. The crowd’s enthusiastic chanting throughout their set was a testament to their popularity and the impact of their music. The Omnific’s set was a sonic journey that left the audience breathless and wanting more.
As the final encore of The Omnific’s set faded into the night, it was clear that Northcote Social had witnessed a truly exceptional evening of progressive instrumentals. The three bands showcased the incredible talent and creativity that exists within the Melbourne music scene. With their technical prowess, innovative compositions, and infectious energy, Sebastiside, LUNE, and The Omnific have solidified their place as rising stars. As fans eagerly anticipate their future performances, it’s evident that the Melbourne progressive scene is alive and thriving, and there’s no doubt that these bands will continue to push the boundaries of their genre and captivate audiences for years to come.
