Hoodoo Gurus 16/9/22

Sidney Myer Music Bowl

What an extreme privilege to be witnessing one of THE best rock ’n roll bands this country has produced, in fine form & definatly at the top of their game.

Tonights show is the Hoodoo Gurus 40th Anniversary Tour, although strictly speaking it is now the 41st Anniversary Tour tour due to rescheduling thanks to you know what!

Opening the show is the always great & supreme talented Even. Blasting through a great set of tunes from their new album ‘Reverse Lightyears’ along with a number of hits from their back catalogue, it was the perfect way to start the evening.

Shortly after Even’s set, we saw the return of The Dandy Warhols to our shores.

It was such a pleasure to have the Dandys back & they didn’t disappoint the receptive crowd with hits We Used To Be Friends & Bohemian Like You.

Hoodoo Gurus took to the stage after a short recess to rapturous applause & very full Sidney Myer Music Bowl on a crisp & damp spring evening in Melbourne.

Opening with (Let’s All) Turn On (Stoneage Romeos), Answered Prayers (Chariot Of The Gods), & The Right Time (Crank), got the eager crowd salivating for more from a band that is still the original lineup – Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd & Richard Grossman (Minus long time drummer, Mark Kingsmill).

The 25 song set list included a wide breadth of hits from most of the Guru’s albums including: Death Defying (Mars Needs Guitars!), Bittersweet (Mars Needs Guitars!), Come Anytime (Magnum Cum Louder), My Girl (Stoneage Romeos). Whats My Scene (Blow Your Cool!) & the list goes on!

The first of two encores saw more hits – Be My Guru (Stoneage Romeos), 1000 Miles Away (Kinky) & Like Wow – Wipeout (Mars Needs Guitars!) which kept everyone on their feet with an appetite for more which was granted. The second & final encore saw the cult classic Leilani (Stoneage Romeos) which was the perfect ending to an excellent night of classic Oz rock.
