Today, Melbourne-based artist Lakyn returns refreshed with the announcement of Melbourne and Sydney shows and the release of his new single ‘Choir Boy’, the first taste of new music since his 2018 EP ‘& Pains’. Sonically and authentically, ‘Choir Boy’ hears Lakyn reflect on his personal growth and current state of mind since writing and recording his previous EP.

“Choir Boy’ is about timing and being at peace with where you’re at. It’s about knowing that wherever you are with your expectations, it’s important to remind yourself that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.” Lakyn reflects.

Accompanied is the official video shot at Ribbon Lea Estate Victoria and filmed and co-directed by Melbourne photographer Jackson Loria. The vision and concept of the ‘Choir Boy’ video came from Lakyn himself, while Sam Bratby added additional editing to the clip.

Explains Lakyn, “I wanted to make something simple that doesn’t distract people from listening to the lyrics and my voice as that’s where my truth lays, I also know people have imaginations and I want them to use it. I write my songs in hopes that people can close their eyes and be taken to a simi-lar place that these songs take me.”

What originated two years ago from the humble settings of Lakyn’s kitchen bench, ‘Choir Boy’ was written in a personal jam session with no real intention of releasing. What allowed the free-flowing emotions and rhythm to naturally articulate the direction, it was his close friends who eventually encouraged the New Zealand born artist to explore the song further.

“They would always ask me to play it when we were just jamming out at home or at parties. I didn’t know if it was good enough but they kept asking for it so I decided to explore it musically,” says Lakyn.

The foundations of ‘Choir Boys’ was further worked on with Konstantin Kersting (Tones & I, Mallrat) from The Belligerents, who co-wrote and produced the track. Lakyn knew the direction he wanted to go with the recording but was looking for someone to help layer it with keys, guitar and bass.

With singles ‘West’, ‘View Looks So Good’ and ‘Sweet Days’ from his EP ‘ & Pains’ capturing serious attention last year his music has already clocked up over 15 million streams across all platforms and received praise from the likes of Happy, Pilerats, Beat Magazine, The Music and triple j. Listening to a lot of rap and hip-hop has influenced Lakyn’s writing structure. Learning to write with a conscious flow of lyrics instead of an overthought concept or pre-determined rhythm, he cites Kendrick Lamar as a massive influence.

After being handpicked to support Vera Blue, Eves Karydas, LAUV and international artist Eric Nam, Lakyn is now gearing up to perform his first own headline shows in Sydney and Melbourne in November with tickets onsale today.
