If you mixed Blondie and Madonna with Kylie, you would get your new favourite disco-pop star, Sydney’s Holiday Sidewinder. Sidewinder returns today with a glossy new single “Tra$h Can Luv” and accompanying video (as premiered via Paper Magazine), along with the announcement of her forthcoming debut EP – out via Personal Best Records.

With its bubble-gum vocals, liquid bass lines and flirtatious rhythms, Holiday Sidewinder dolls out another perfectly formed pearl from her seemingly bottomless pop purse in “Tra$h Can Luv”. On the single, Sidewinder burns her songwriting flame to the manic longing that comes of being undervalued in a relationship, and distills from it a strangely beautiful and romantic cynicism. Loosely Inspired by tracks like 10cc’s “Not in Love” and Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for The Money”, “Tra$h Can Luv”tells the story of a Pretty Woman-style dynamic, without the fairytale ending. Her gift is finding the confidence and glamour in anything, be it a disappointing romance or a trash can at the back of a five-star hotel. That, and writing red hot pop hits.

The accompanying video was shot on a whim over the short life of a blazing smog-filled sunset on a rooftop in Los Angeles. Directed by fashion photographer Thom Kerr, the video channels Baccara’s dodgy disco era lip-sync videos. Playful as always, Holiday continues to flirt with the idea of smoke and mirrors; the grease and grime behind the illusion of glamour… asking if one man’s treasure might just be another woman’s trash.

“Tra$h Can Luv” follows on from Sidewinder’s debut psych-infused disco pop nugget “Casino” and heralds a new chapter for the former Bridezilla frontwoman, who once played alongside the likes of Nick CaveSiaJohn Cale (Velvet Underground), The Flaming Lips and Interpol in the late noughties indie scene.

Having worked with multiple artists the past few years (including an album with PNAU and Empire of the Sun’s Nick Littlemore for his side project), “Tra$h Can Luv” is a fresh taste from what’s to come from the newly reinvented Sidewinder. Stay tuned for more sugary offerings when she drops her debut EP Tra$h Can Luv due out on Personal Best Records.
