Ahead of Basenji kicking off his stunning new live show to fans across Australia next week, the Sydney producer today completes his four-part bootleg series with a thumping edit of Robin S’ “Show Me Love” premiered via Red Bull Music. After unleashing a new bootleg from a favourite artist each week across March, Basenji’s fourth and final homage places an ethereal twist on the 90s house classic, seeing delicate restraint unfold into a kick-heavy, energetic and wholly unforgettable club number.
“Show Me Love” follows Basenji’s whistling, high-energy take on Glasgow phenomenon Hudson Mohawke’s club staple, “Chimes”, first shared in the series. Percussion percolated amid Basenji’s re-work of the track’s momentous build, before sirens gave way to sparse, driving rhythms – reintroducing HudMo’s original in an entirely new and unexpected format. The series then revealed a hauntingly beautiful house edit of Jeff Buckley’s “Mojopin”, as well as a blissful take on eternal pop queen JoJo’s “Baby It’s You”.
In addition to hearing his triumphant recent single “Mistakes”, featuring powerhouse vocalist Tkay Maidza, fans can see Basenji display his gravitating creativity across a four-date tour kicking off at Adelaide’s Fat Controller on Friday April 13. Basenji will also perform a hometown bash at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Saturday April 14, before heading south to play Melbourne’s late night haunt The Night Cat on Friday April 20. The “Mistakes” tour will round out at Brisbane’s The TBC Club on Saturday April 21.
With its instantly absorbing beat, marching bass line and orchestral sounds paired with the raw, echoing harmonies of Tkay Maidza, “Mistakes” is a testament to Basenji’s consistent innovation and impeccable production capabilities. Since its release, the track has received unanimous applause both home-grown and beyond – championed by triple j with a full add, recognised commercially by 2DAYFM and its syndicated networks nationwide, as well as achieving overwhelming success on Spotify, having appeared in Spotify’s coveted Top 50 Viral Charts in the US, Hungary, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia, where the single peaked at #3.
The Future Classic signee has been turning heads since the release of his debut singles “Dawn” and “Heirloom” in 2014. After both releases flew up the iTunes Electronic charts, Basenji was named the FBi Click Producer of the Year in 2014, played his first Boiler Room show and performed at the iconic Sydney Opera House as part of Vivid LIVE Festival. 2015’s debut EP Trackpad soared online and has since accumulated over 14 million plays on Spotify, with EP cuts “Petals” feat. Scenic and “Can’t Get Enough” both topping the Hype Machine charts. After returning mid-last year with “Don’t Let Go” featuring Mereki, fans were delighted to welcome back one of the finest electronic talents of our time. By the time his follow up “Mistakes” was released, it was clear that Basenji had put himself in a league of his own.
In between releasing new music, the producer has kept a busy live schedule, touring nationally and appearing at the country’s biggest festivals including Splendour In The Grass, Listen Out, OutsideIn, Beyond The Valley, Falls Music & Arts Festival and Laneway Festival. With “Mistakes” fast becoming the anthem of the summer, and Basenji having treated us to a series of energetic bootlegs by some of his favourite artists – don’t miss seeing the talented producer’s incredible new live show in a city near you from next week.
