Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Jeremy Dooley
Daddy Cool
Making its debut at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is Jeremy Dooley with his brand new show Daddy Cool.
Jeremy saunters out onto the stage to introduce the warm up act, and just like Deadpool’s human shield Richard Meneses is a friendly Canadian.
Richard delivers a fantastic act, describing what it’s like to be the lowest rung on the Australian social scene- A backpacker. He discusses how one day he was just really fucking bored and decided to move to Australia. His timing is great, his jokes land and is a confidently delivered set with multiple laughs. Having a warm up act is a great way to relax the audience and Segway into the main act.
Jeremy Dooley is welcomed back to the stage with a round of applause and jumps straight into things. Informing everyone that he’s just returned from Darwin, to which he gets a lukewarm response.
Audience participation is essential with the show and Jeremy riffs with the crowd in such an expert way it’s hard to believe that this is the show’s debut. Banter with the crowd bolsters the show and makes for some really fucking funny moments- it’s absolutely brilliant.
The main theme of the show is Dooley’s rather recent and nerve wracking foray into Fatherhood. It’s a seemingly terrifying adventure for the comic that makes for some great jokes.
The thing that makes for great comedy is when a writer is able to take an authentic experience and turn it into comedy. It’s different from observation comedy, and Dooley’s own experiences make for comedy gold. He’s himself, unapologetically and it makes for a great show.
Daddy Cool is a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud show that audiences can truly relate to.
