Wednesday 13
Kim Dracula
Northcote Theatre, Sunday Nov 23
Wednesday 13 have returned to Melbourne stages, in a co-headling gig with Kim Dracula. Draped in a black hooded cape, frontman Wednesday arrives on stage to a full room, zombie clad fans awaiting him.
And he doesn’t disappoint. The band offers up an exceptional performance, energetic and engaging the crowd all at once.Performing hits “ I Want You Dead”“ When The Devil Commands” and “I Walked With A Zombie” the band are entertaining to say the least. Wednesday 13 are one of those bands that genuinely enjoy pleasing the crowd and whipping everyone into a frenzy. Ending all too soon with “ I Love To Say Fuck” (Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 cover) their set is over all too soon.
Soon after, an announcement comes over the loud speaker heralding the arrival of Kim Dracula.
“What’s going on? This whole place is gonna explode. Yes, I heard you the first time, but what can we do or stop it? Well, there is something. Yes. We could build up the shields. Let’s do it then and run it now. But you do that, we’d need lots of energy. I mean, the energy of an entire live show..”
The crowd parts and a hooded caped Kim runs through the centre of the crowd.
Launching straight into “ Land Of The Sun” the show kicks off with a bang. Dracula paces the stage like a tiger, guttural grows and blonde hair whipping around.
Dracula plays an eclectic mix of music, at times a saxophone takes centre stage. A few covers are also thrown in with unique versions of Pearl Jam’s “ Evenflow”, Lady Gaga’s “ Paparazzi” and a snippet of “ Careless Whisper” on sax.
Dracula is an enigma somewhat, it’s a frenzied show that is a genre bending experience.
