David Gray
Palais Theatre, St. Kilda
Sunday Nov 09
The auditorium is on it’s feet and giving a standing ovation even before David Gray plays his first note. In Australia for his Past & Present World Tour, the iconic UK artist is here to treat Australian audiences with an array of classics and new music.
The sold out Palais Theatre is the perfect setting for the talented Gray to showcase his powerful voice, the acoustics are absolutely sublime, the high ceilings filled with sound. Running through the set list, he plays a variety of crowd pleasing songs, playing White Ladder early on in the set.
Gray has a talent that is unmatched, he creates songs and art that has depth and mystery. He begs the question- is this someone who feels deeply, and lets us into his world. He performs each song with passion and a voice that gives listeners goosebumps.
This Years Love has the entire theater holding their breaths in awe, he delivers it with such a heartfelt performance that the crowd are silent. It’s an achingly beautiful song that speaks to everyone who has ever been tired of getting their heart broken time and time again.
Right before launching into Babylon, he gets playful with a cover of Depache Mode’s Just Can’t Get Enough, dancing to the 80s classic. It’s a nice little surprise for the audience that aren’t quite ready to let him leave. The audience erupts into a virtual choir for Babylon, people are dancing in the aisles. Wrapping up with Say Hello, Wave Goodbye he ends the set with Sail Away.
David Gray is not only an exceptionally talented songwriter, he is an artist that lets you into his world, shows you parts of his soul and leaves you feeling a little exposed.
