CUSTARD DROPS NEW ALBUM
‘SUBURBAN CURTAINS’
+ NATIONAL TOUR
OUT NOW AND AVAILABLE HERE
CUSTARD here comes the sun of it all: latest album SUBURBAN CURTAINS is officially drawn.
The scintillating strains of spring burst through every opening of your abode. Open your heart and your doors as CUSTARD are finally back on your street playing the songs of their life…your’s even. That unassuageable politics of love astride that turgid love of politics…a class unto themselves. A feel for the charm of the blossom.
Latest double kaazzaaam SUBURBAN CURTAINS will prick your ears and have you standing with a bounce and a flutter before you know what tracks you. Featuring a small bounty of collaborators – Michael Lira (Darth Vegas), Serena Ryder, Maureen Hansen, Charlie Bedford and Lucy McLure – recorded with Chris Townend at MONA’s Frying Pan studio in Hobart, mixed by Glenn at the beach…feel the joy, season, and sun of it all.
Glenn Thompson notes: “I was at work researching art museum / human digital interfaces when I stumbled upon the new recording studio at MONA with an old EMI/Abbey Road desk plus a Studer 8 track tape deck. I emailed them immediately. A short while later we got together at my place at Culburra Beach and bashed out 21 songs. We wrote down the chords on sheets of A4 paper and recorded a version of each tune on an iPhone. We put a PDF of the chord sheets and the recordings up on DropBox so we could study at our leisure. A month later we flew to Hobart and recorded all the songs in two days. 8 tracks straight to tape. Then we did what we normally do; we took our songs back to our respective home studios and recorded our vocals and other overdubs. I mixed it in my granny flat and sent it off to be mastered. Then I went back to work.”
Dedicated with the utmost affection and care to our most dearest Sarah Longhurst.
Having formed in Brisbane in 1990, CUSTARD released five albums over the following decade (Buttercup/Bedford, Wahooti Fandango, Wisenheimer, We Have the Technology and Loverama). The band developed a cult following, playing countless shows around the country and touring overseas, as well as producing a parade of memorable singles, several of which became entrenched in Australian pop music history. ‘Apartment’ polled higher than any other local artist in triple j’s Hottest 100 in 1995, with ‘Girls Like That (Don’t Go For Guys Like Us)’ coming in at #3 in the 1998 vote, before the group disbanded in 1999. No reason was given, or research conducted.
Since reforming, the band has released 4 albums, “Come Back All is Forgiven” (2015), “The Common Touch” (2017), “The Band Live In The Basement” (2018), and eight album “Respect All Lifeforms” (2020) showed they’re just a damn fine pop band. As Glenn declared, “I like to dance around to almost any sound.”
