Underground Lovers announce
Australian Anniversary Tour

Celebrating 30 years of seminal album Dream it Down

With very special guests Youth Group

Highly revered Melbourne based alt-pop visionaries Underground Lovers are celebrating 30 years of their critically acclaimed album Dream it Down. To celebrate, they are embarking on an anniversary tour and album re-issue including a deluxe vinyl edition. The iconic group will be hitting the road, playing Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in July and August, joined by very special guests Youth Group.

Known for iconic tracks like ‘Losin’ It’, and ‘Las Vegas’, Underground Lovers’ set will include a wide selection of songs from their 1994 release as well as key tracks from their extensive back catalogue. The show will feature the original, dynamic line up from the early 90’s – Glenn Bennie, Vincenzo Giarrusso, Richard Andrew, Philippa Nihill and Maurice Argiro. They will also be joined by long-time member Emma Bortignon and special guest instrumentalists Zoe Barrie and Amanda Brown (of The Go-Betweens).

Forming in 1989, Underground Lovers have maintained a dedicated following with their unique blend of dream pop, shoegaze and post-punk. The band have released 10 studio albums and toured extensively around Australia and internationally, supporting the likes of The Cure, New Order and My Bloody Valentine.

They scored an ARIA Award for Best New Talent in 1991 with Dream it Down voted Australian album of the year in 1994 by triple j’s Richard Kingsmill. ’Losin’ It’ reached  #19 in the Hottest 100 of that year, wedged in between Green Day’s ‘Longview’ and Soundgarden’s ‘Black Hole Sun’.

Speaking about the record, frontmen Glenn Bennie and Vincenzo Giarrusso noted that, “Dream It Down is a significant album for us: it marked a change in direction musically for the band, and a change in the way we went about recording albums. Our philosophy was, and still is, that it should be all about the song.

To help celebrate 30 years of Dream it Down, the six-piece band are releasing the album on vinyl for the very first time, including B-sides, and releasing an expanded edition featuring tracks that have never been on streaming services before.

For the tour, the band will be joined by Youth Group, the four-piece indie band who have earned a cult following in Australia across five critically acclaimed albums. Formed in the late 90’s, Youth Group’s sound is reminiscent of bands like Pavement and Death Cab for Cutie. The band rose to the spotlight with their infamous 2006 cover of Alphaville’s “Forever Young”, which launched to #1 on the ARIA charts and won an ARIA award for Best New Single.

Three decades on, Underground Lovers are excited to be back playing the songs you know and love.
