Interview: Behind the Magic of MAHO MAGIC BAR

Australia’s favourite Japanese magic bar delighted and stunned Melbourne audiences in 2023 with rave reviews. With new and astonishing illusions, MAHO MAGIC BAR by Broad Encounters is returning to Melbourne as part of the brand new Spiegel Haus Melbourne, ready to astound afresh.

With fresh tricksters, fresh tricks and even fresher cocktails, MAHO MAGIC BAR jets audiences straight to a neon-lit ‘Tokyo’ night, with all the mischief, mayhem, cocktails and laughter you could wish for.

MAHO MAGIC BAR features a carefully curated bar menu of premium Japanese alcoholic and non-alcoholic libations and cocktails. This season sees it taking up residency at Spiegel Haus Melbourne, a spectacular new two-level entertainment precinct in the heart of the city with multiple performance venues and a rooftop bar and lounge, premiering in October 2025.

Q&A – Behind the Magic of MAHO MAGIC BAR

We spoke to Kirsten Siddle, Creative Director, Broad Encounters.

Q: What inspired the original concept for MAHO MAGIC BAR?

I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan and I love the country, the people and the culture so much. On one particular trip, I was enjoying the nightlife in Osaka and had attended a couple of ‘magic bars’, and this is where the idea sparked. I should note that Japanese magic bars are quite low key as compared to Maho, but the beginnings of the concept and the shape of the show took root there. I wanted to create something that paid homage to Japan and its culture, using magic as a way to bring people together in collective awe. The Japanese love magic and they are truly exceptional at it, especially close-up sleight-of-hand magic. We don’t often see magicians of this calibre in Australia and I love that we’ve created a show that’s a love letter to Japan –  full of fun, with lashings of Japanese culture and that showcases world class artists.

Q: What elements of Japanese culture and design influenced the show’s atmosphere and staging?

Something that I love about Japan and Japanese culture is the juxtaposition between ancient and modern, refined and … well, chaotic and over-the-top. We’ve channeled this juxtaposition into both the physical and theatrical design of Maho Magic Bar. The exterior is a cacophony of neon lights and Jpop. However, when you enter you discover a refined space with deep, rich wood textures, cascading cherry blossom and gentle lanterns. Of course, we mix this up all over again within the show, but the vision was to showcase both the chaos of the nightlife districts alongside the refined sophistication found only in Japan.

Q: How does the creative team choose which magicians to feature each season?

Maho Magic Bar is now famous amongst magicians, so we have magicians from all over the world writing to us and sending their performance profiles. However, when selecting the cast I am keen to find people that each contribute a unique aesthetic and vibe to the ensemble. We develop their stage performance styles building on their own personalities, and the mix is incredibly important.  One magician may be a slick card shark, while another might exemplify the kooky innovation of a mad creator. The magicians’ personalities, humour and exceptional skill are at the heart of Maho Magic Bar.

Q: Do the magicians collaborate on each other’s acts, or does each performer bring their own distinct flavour to the bar?

Magicians are used to working in a solo capacity, but in Maho Magic Bar it requires a team approach and effort. Each magician is expected to bring a suite of stellar magic and ideas to the table, but they also often share their magic, collaborate and teach each other tricks. Together, we work to shape the suite of tricks on offer, the variety and the theatrical aspects to performance delivery. The team are all hugely supportive of each other and are always seeking to offer ideas or perspectives. They also love sharing what they know about Australian culture!

Q: What kind of training or background do these performers come from are they illusionists, theatre artists, comedians, or all of the above?

These magicians are magic specialists through and through. Training is usually a bespoke arrangement. Someone interested in magic will usually begin by learning on their own, and then seek private tutoring from other renowned magicians. One of our magicians, Shirayuri, for example, is the protege of multi-award-winning magician and creator Shoot Ogawa. The amount of practice and creative thought that is required to get to this level is inspiring, it’s literally thousands upon thousands of hours of practice.

Q: How do you ensure returning audiences still experience something completely new each season?

Returning audiences can not only experience something new each season, they can also return multiple times within a single season and see many different tricks. As well as changing up the cast between seasons, with a combination of returning and new cast; each magician also performs a completely different suite of tricks at each table. Meaning if you attend twice you just need to sit at a different table to see a whole host of different close-up magic. Furthermore, as I mentioned above, the hours that this team puts in practicing and preparing means they are continually bringing new tricks and new ideas to the table … nothing stays the same for long with magicians!

Live Review: Kim Dracula / Wednesday 13

Wednesday 13
Kim Dracula
Northcote Theatre, Sunday Nov 23

Wednesday 13 have returned to Melbourne stages, in a co-headling gig with Kim Dracula. Draped in a black hooded cape, frontman Wednesday arrives on stage to a full room, zombie clad fans awaiting him.

And he doesn’t disappoint. The band offers up an exceptional performance, energetic and engaging the crowd all at once.Performing hits “ I Want You Dead”“ When The Devil Commands” and “I Walked With A Zombie” the band are entertaining to say the least. Wednesday 13 are one of those bands that genuinely enjoy pleasing the crowd and whipping everyone into a frenzy. Ending all too soon with “ I Love To Say Fuck” (Frankenstein Drag Queens From Planet 13 cover) their set is over all too soon.

Soon after, an announcement comes over the loud speaker heralding the arrival of Kim Dracula.

What’s going on? This whole place is gonna explode. Yes, I heard you the first time, but what can we do or stop it?
Well, there is something. Yes. We could build up the shields.
Let’s do it then and run it now. But you do that, we’d need lots of energy. I mean, the energy of an entire live show..”

The crowd parts and a hooded caped Kim runs through the centre of the crowd.

Launching straight into “ Land Of The Sun” the show kicks off with a bang. Dracula paces the stage like a tiger, guttural grows and blonde hair whipping around.

Dracula plays an eclectic mix of music, at times a saxophone takes centre stage. A few covers are also thrown in with unique versions of Pearl Jam’s “ Evenflow”, Lady Gaga’s “ Paparazzi” and a snippet of “ Careless Whisper” on sax.

Dracula is an enigma somewhat, it’s a frenzied show that is a genre bending experience.

Live Review: Paul Dempsey

Paul Dempsey
Shotgun Karaoke Tour
Palais Theatre

Paul Dempsey, better known as the frontman of Something For Kate has yet again released a brilliant album of covers, appropriately titled Shotgun Karaoke Volume 2.

In his beloved hometown of Melbourne he stands in front of the audience dressed in a red jacket, one guitar to accompany him. Having dipped the audience’s toes into a sea of melancholy with opening act Carla Geneve, the crowd is more than ready for Paul to serenade us with his unique voice.

Opening with ‘Time To Pretend’ a MGMT cover, he follows it quickly with ‘ Losing My Religion’  ( REM) much to the audience’s delight.

This evening’s audience are a passionate bunch with a crowd member calling out a greeting from the top balcony- a Chris Kelly from Bendigo, whose voice projects loudly across the theatre. Dempsey laughs it off, ever the professional.

There are very few artists with the vocal range of the late Jeff Buckley, however Dempsey is one artist that can pull it off. He doesn’t mimic Buckley as he covers ‘ Last Goodbye’, instead he makes the song his own.

It’s also very fitting to note that on the 28th anniversary of Michael Hutchence’s death he pays tribute to the icon of Australian music by doing his own version of ‘ Never Tear Us Apart’.

The Palais is normally a very formal venue, where people come to sit in silence and watch their favourite artists perform upon its stage. However, Dempsey with his boyish charm and exceptional vocals has managed to turn the venue into a pub- style sing a- long with eager audience members shouting out unintelligible requests at every opportunity.

And that’s the beauty of Paul Dempsey’s ability to sing other people’s songs. He can take the most upbeat pop song – like Cher’s ‘If I Could  Turn Back Time’ and turn it into something almost mournful and beautiful. It’s a rare talent and what makes his Shotgun Karaoke so brilliant.

As the evening wraps up and the heavens have opened up to drizzle rain upon us all, Dempsey has performed an eclectic array of songs, from different artists and genres and presented to the audience as whole new pieces to inspire and bring joy to all that love hearing Dempsey sing. He is a unique talent that is one of Australia’s most enjoyable to watch.

Crowbar, Brisbane

21st of November, 2025

Punk Rock Factory arrived at Crowbar, Brisbane last night for the first Aussie leg of their ‘The Mortal Wombat’ tour. Bringing an epic set of their unique pop-punk sound to a wide range of popular covers (think Disney’s best, Michael Jackson’s thriller and the Bluey intro), Brisbane was treated to a night of high-energy, nostalgia and crowd rap battles. The lads are off to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide next, before jetting over to Japan to continue the tour in Osaka and Tokyo.

Live Review: Kalandra

Kalandra

Stay Gold

East Brunswick’s iconic venue Stay Gold is bursting at the seams with patrons this evening for the debut Australian tour with Norwegian band Kalandra.

The eclectic crowd holds their breath in awe, as the first notes of ‘ Borders’ begins. The small stage giving fans a very intimate and personal performance.

The band fill the room with sound, it takes up space and draws listeners in as they clutch their phones, elbow to elbow filming each moment.

Singing in both Norwegian and English by Katrine Stenbekk’s sublime vocals are almost other worldly, it’s like she sings from an ancient time and memory. It’s captivating and beautifully crafted music that is haunting.

She stops occasionally to talk to the audience, a delicate voice that speaks of heartbreak, love, seasons and life. Fans hanging on every word, delighted to be witnessing the event.

Playing favourites ‘Bukkehorn’, ‘Till The End’ and ‘Ghosts’ the band plays a solid 90 min set. The room is hushed the entire time, and the band thanks the crowd for being polite. Melbourne audiences are known for  their respect for musicians, and most shows are watched in silent awe.

Closing out the set are ‘Helvegen’, ‘Brave New World’ and

‘ Bardaginn’ before the band head over to meet eagerly awaiting fans at the merch desk.

Kalandra’s debut tour has been well received and fans have delighted in seeing the popular band finally on Australian shores. Hopefully they return soon to much bigger venues to celebrate their music with even more fans.

News: Ball Park Music Announce Their Next Chapter: ‘The Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventure Continues…’ 2026 Tour

Ball Park Music are ready to kickstart the next chapter of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventure. Where every stage is electric, every song tells a story and every crowd feels just like home.

The phrase was introduced to the band by one of their most beloved and now dearly departed tour managers. Functioning like a motto or mantra on the road, it was a ramshackle statement that could be blurted out by anyone at any time. It was just as suitable to yell in the glow of post-show euphoria as it was to say in the quiet melancholy of a 4am lobby call. Partly sarcastic, partly serious, and definitely filled with the giggling resignation of seasoned road dogs; it’s a humble catchphrase that perfectly embodies a musician’s somewhat misguided devotion to being on the road.

This next chapter of The Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventure will be stacked with fan favourites, deep cuts and everything in between, culminating in a massive celebration of everything that encapsulates Ball Park Music and all the wonderful things that the band has achieved over their career that currently spans eight studio albums.

Expect an ever-changing journey through every era: the anthems, the slow burners and the deep cuts that have somehow grown into fan favourites. After an especially exhilarating year that sees the band visit everything from tin sheds to stadiums, from Albury to Amsterdam, and even clock the 600 show milestone, this will be the definitive Ball Park Music experience.

This tour brings the band back to some of their most beloved venues across the country in rooms where the walls still hum with the echoes of past tours, massive singalongs and the magic of nights that were over a little too soon.

It’s time to show your inner grit and join Ball Park Music as they find out where the Rock ‘n’ Roll Adventure will take us all next…

News: SANGUISUGABOGG US Gore Merchants Return To Australia in June 2026 With Special Guests, PEELINGFLESH

SANGUISUGABOGG
US Gore Merchants Return To Australia in June 2026
With Special Guests, PEELINGFLESH

Shat out of hell? Indeed. The epically unpronounceable, utterly indecipherable and altogether uncompromising gore merchants, Sanguisugabogg, are returning to Australia in June 2026 with special guests PeelingFlesh.

Having left Australian crowds in bloody heaps on their debut tour in 2024 via their now infamous tradition of playing ‘murderball’, where a football is thrown into the heaving pit with the promise of some free merch for the one maniac who is still standing and holding the ball at the end of the next song, Sanguisugabogg are ready to up the ante this time with their good, friendly, violent fun!

The sonic stench that permeates their latest release, Hideous Aftermath, has become the benchmark for modern death metal. With the torch being passed to them from their heroes in Cannibal Corpse, Mortician and Suffocation, the ’Bogg deliver queasiness-inducing tracks such as Necrosexual Deviant, Face Ripped Off, Skin Cushion and Dragged By A Truck, all of which test the limits of the human body with gurgling abyssal lows and bowel rattling heaviness.

No longer that band of meme-inspiring miscreants, their blasts of sludgy riffing and tongue-severed-from-cheek, gross-out humour are backed up by their devastating musicianship. Sharper, meaner and more lethal than ever, their grotesque gore-obsessed, psycho-sexual, body-horror artistry may seem perverse or fetishistic to some but to the ‘Bogg, it’s perfectly normal.

Adding to the carnage are Oklahoma’s PeelingFlesh, the slamming, gangster-groove juggernaut making their long awaited debut on Aussie soil.

Prepare for nothing less than total sonic dismemberment, a night of horror-drenched depravity and refined carnage that hits like a sledgehammer to the sternum. Together, this bill is a demented double dose of pure, unfiltered brutality.

News: MAISIE PETERS SHARES HAUNTING NEW SINGLE ‘SAY MY NAME IN YOUR SLEEP’ CO-WRITTEN AND CO-PRODUCED WITH MARCUS MUMFORD

Fresh from her instantly sold-out intimate ‘Before the Bloom’ comeback shows across London and New York, Maisie Peters has shared another taste of her soon-to-be-announced third studio album with ‘Say My Name In Your Sleep’, the first of two collaborations between Peters and 2X Grammy winner Marcus Mumford. Listen HERE. It also features backing vocals from Australian artist Gretta Ray, who has been a close collaborator and friend of Peters over the past couple of years, and supported her on her Australian and UK “The Good Witch Tour”.

Handpicked as Zane Lowe’s New Music Dailytrack of the day, ‘Say My Name In Your Sleep’ is built on delicate fingerpicked guitar and loosely inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 Gothic novel ‘Rebecca’. Contemplating love’s lasting imprint, its push and pull between past and future underpins one of the album’s central arcs: how the right love helps you heal from the wrong one.

‘Say My Name In Your Sleep’ is a song about both haunting and being haunted,” explains Maisie. “It’s about keeping a constant eye on the past – on the person you loved – whilst being old enough and grown enough to know it wasn’t right, and to wish them all the best. It’s about having a tiny, secret sliver of your heart that still, deep down, hopes and prays they think of you – just a little, just when it’s dark, just when they hear that song on the radio. It’s about letting go, begrudgingly, but letting your shadow linger a moment too long.

Maisie continues: “It was one of the first songs Marcus and I wrote together in Real World Studios in deep winter – there was something magical and spooky in the air there, and I think it definitely got translated into this song.

Stay tuned for more Maisie news soon.

News: Experimental Scottish group The Beta Band announce FIRST Australian Tour

Experimental Scottish rock group The Beta Bandhave announced their long-awaited Australian debut. Heading to Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth in 2026, the band are set to perform their 1998 album The Three E.P.’s along with fan favourites. Recently reuniting with sold out shows in the USA and UK, since they disbanded 21 years ago, The Beta Band’s surprise return is huge news to indie lovers down under.

Fontman Steve Mason has pitched the reunion tour as “a chance to see one of the greatest British bands of the last 30 years – before they turn us into holograms.”

Known for tracks like “Dry The Rain” and “Squares”, The Beta Band have built a reputation for being uncategorizable. Their sound incorporated disparate influences like psychedelia, hip hop and ambient noise into their unique blend of indie rock. Their 1998 debut album The Three E.P.’s compiled the band’s first three EP releases – Champion Versions, The Patty Patty Sound and Los Amigos del Beta Bandidos.  Met with critical acclaim, the album was placed at No. 23 on Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 1990s and listed by Q as No. 74 in The 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. With A-list fans like Oasis and Radiohead, the band reached a new level of visibility and cult appeal when their song “Dry The Rain” was immortalised in a now-famous scene in the 2000 film High Fidelity.

The four-piece formed in Fife in 1996, bonding over a love of art and poetry in a time when toxic masculinity permeated mainstream culture. The Beta Band were determined to create the music nobody else was making, rooted in innovation rather than nostalgia. Committed to their punk ethos, the group were known for their experimental films, music videos and wild stage shows – with stories ranging from light-up velcro suits to an accidental (and very expensive) gig in a scout hut.

Following the success of their debut album The Three E.P.’s the band went on to release three more celebrated albums. After two decades, the iconic Scottish band wants to celebrate the music they’re so proud of by sharing it with the world again. In response to their recent London show, a reviewer from Music News declared “As ground-breaking as they were two decades ago, The Beta Band still hold up. Even more so now, in an age where genre boundaries have all but disappeared.”

Don’t miss The Beta Band’s Australian debut in May / June 2026

News: MAXÏMO PARK Announce 20th Anniversary Shows Australian Tour

MAXÏMO PARK Announce 20th Anniversary Shows Australian Tour

UK alternative rock icons Maxïmo Parkare making their long-awaited return to Australia, for the first time since 2009! And they’re bringing a celebration two decades in the making.

In April 2026, the party will be in full swing as Maxïmo Park marks the 20th anniversary of their seminal debut album A Certain Trigger. To honour the milestone, the band will perform tracks from the Mercury Prize-nominated record alongside fan favourites from their expansive catalogue, spanning eight albums and twenty electrifying years.

A Certain Trigger burst onto the scene with a trio of iconic singles; Apply Some Pressure, Graffiti and Going Missing, songs that still ignite indie dance floors and festival crowds to this day. With their debut, Maxïmo Park emerged as the bookish, livewire outsiders: fusing punk urgency pop precision, and literary flair into a sound that was as smart as it was explosive.

To this day Maxïmo Park remains a driving force, a band that moves the head, the heart, and the feet in equal measure. This tour promises a dynamic blend of nostalgia and fresh cuts, as they tear through Australia with a setlist spanning decades, bending genres, and bringing nothing but raw, euphoric energy.

Lead Singer Paul Smith comments: “Not many bands make it to a twentieth year together so we’re having a big celebration, with a special 20th anniversary tour and by giving a fresh perspective to A Certain Trigger. Our first album remains dear to so many people, and compiling archive material for the reissue has been like entering a time machine – thrilling, but also a bit scary! Happily, we think the music has more than stood the test of time, and the tour, where we’ll revisit many of the beloved older songs, will be a joyful experience for both us and our audience. Playing live has always been at the heart of what we do, and we still feel the same exhilaration stepping onto the stage as we did in the beginning, but now with even more appreciation of the moment, and the roar of the crowds and we can’t wait to make it back to Australia to celebrate with our friends there.’
