“This song started as a little jam in my L.A. apartment and we finished it in the studio with Christopher Grant (producer of Glassjaw and Around Around Around) earlier this year,” saysClark. “The song is about running away from what’s familiar and embracing change. I felt like I was going through a ton of personal changes when we were working on this song, including moving away from San Francisco after being there for six years. In many ways, I was yearning to leave an old life and self behind, and to embrace the metamorphosis that comes with a stark change of your surroundings.”
As a result, the lushly layered song is bathed in gorgeous gloominess and an angular guitar tension slowly builds from the opening verses and choruses, escalating and erupting in a thrilling sonic explosion and coda. It also functions as a love letter to the band’s time in a city that so integral to its members — both professionally and personally — in unique ways.
“I am born and raised in the city and it’s the birthplace of chokecherry, but having lived here my whole life makes leaving feel impossible sometimes,” Levinson says, offering her take on the song and a geographical shift. “When I was a kid, I wanted to escape home and see the world so badly. We intermingle our familiar themes of running away and starting over with an upbeat track, aiming to capture the beautiful side of starting something new. Despite this cry for an escape, San Francisco has a unique hold on all who experience it, including us. We may be looking to shed our past selves, but a part of us will always exist here in the fog.”
The song is truly anchored in Fog City, with Levinson sharing,“The outro features train audio clips we recorded in the city.”
chokecherry‘s longtime friend Christopher Grant produced and played drums. It was mixed by Chris Coady (Diiv, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House).
