Today Sydney country sensation Gavin Mac has released his debut full-length album Make You Feel today Thursday September 5. Glistening modern alt-country with sentimental hues, the album is a testament to his excellent writing. We caught up with Gavin Mac to ask about it.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your new album? What’s the overall theme or concept?
Sure! The new album Make You Feel is all about nostalgia and awakening those emotions we tend to hide away. It’s kind of like hitting the pause button on life to take a moment and reflect on the things that shaped you. Whether it’s the lyrics, the melodies, or the overall vibe, I wanted to make people feel something.
2. How does this album differ from your previous work?
This is more personal for me. I spent a lot of time during COVID dusting off old lyrics and reworking them, so it’s a bit like digging through your own attic of emotions and memories. It’s more reflective compared to the stuff I’ve done before, and so the stories have more depth.
3. What was the inspiration behind the songs on this album?
The inspiration came from all over. For instance, Live Your Life was inspired by a friend of a friend, who tragically passed away during COVID. Then there’s Sideswiped, which is a fun, fictional story about one of those days where everything just goes wrong. It’s a mix of real life, misadventures, and a few crazy stories from the past.
4. Can you walk us through your songwriting process for this album?
Honestly, it’s pretty all over the place. Sometimes it’s a guitar riff, sometimes it’s a random thought that gets stuck in my head. Make You Feel, for example, was written in just five minutes—it just flowed. On the other hand, Bushfire was rewritten the night before recording. It’s all about catching that moment when inspiration strikes, even if it’s a bit last minute!
5. Were there any particular challenges you faced while making this album?
Balancing life, family, work and music was challenging. And then there’s always the self-doubt that creeps in.
6. Did you collaborate with any other artists or producers on this album? If so, how did those collaborations influence the final product?
I did! I worked with some incredibly talented folks like Ben Butler, who’s played with legends like Bruce Springsteen and Sting. His guitar work really brought the songs to life. I also teamed up with Matt Fell, an ARIA & CMAA winner, who produced the album and gave it that polished, professional edge.
7. How do you feel this album represents your growth as an artist?
I think it shows that I’m more comfortable diving into deeper, more personal stories. I’ve grown a lot as a songwriter, and I feel like this album reflects that. It’s more about capturing real emotions and less about just creating catchy tunes (though, I hope they’re still catchy!).
8. What are you most excited for your fans to hear on this album?
I’m really excited for people to hear the title track, Make You Feel. It sums up the entire vibe of the album and was written so quickly and naturally—it just clicked. I’m also pumped for them to hear Sideswiped live. It’s always a crowd favourite!
9. Do you have any plans for touring or promoting the album once it’s released?
Absolutely! I’ve got some gigs lined up, during the Tamworth Country Music Festival. And there are more shows in the works. I can’t wait to get back on stage and bring these songs to life for the fans.
10. What’s next for you after the album release? Are there any upcoming projects or goals you’re working towards?
After the release, it’s all about touring and performing. I’ve also got a few collaborations in mind—people like Diesel and Amber Lawrence are on my wish list. But for now, it’s all about getting Make You Feel out there and seeing where it takes me!
