Two Door Cinema Club and Declan McKenna arrived at Riverstage for the Brisbane leg of their coheadline Australian tour on Friday.

Declan McKenna kicked the night off. The incredibly talented British singer, played multiple instruments in a diverse set list that ranged from slow and emotional to fun and dancey moments.

Two Door Cinema Club showcased their extensive set list of indie pop rock they have been building since 2009. A downpour of rain only added to the ambience and kept the crowd cool from the Brissy heat. The Irish lads infectious energy captivated the audience, the crowd screaming the lyrics of songs like ‘What You Know’, ‘Undercover Martyn’ and ‘Sun’ through their raincoats.

Review: Darkfield

DARKFIELD is a spine-tingling collection of immersive audio experiences that unfold inside custom-built shipping containers and in complete darkness.

Darkfield: Flight

As you walk into the shipping container a row of airplane seats greets you and you’re asked to sit in a seat and fasten your seat belt.

The lights go out and suddenly you’re on a plane, getting ready for take off. The engine whirrs, the plane shakes and we’re in the air. What happens next in the dark is spine chilling, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy as we are taken on a journey in complete darkness. The senses are heightened, the body feels what is going on, and the mind translates this into reality.

The captain speaks, we’re all in this moment together and it’s both exhilarating and terrifying all at once.

What happens in this 25- minute experience is so realistic that you can’t help but be totally immersed in the event, it’s happening to you and it feels real.

Being immersed in total darkness makes the senses more heightened and the mind more alert, and as we journey towards the destination, our bodies and minds are totally transformed into a whole new world.

But is it real? It certainly feels like it is, so it must be.

 

Darkfield: Seance

Next we step into the experience known as Seance.

Walking in we are greeted by a large table, red velvet chairs and bells hanging from the ceiling. We are seated close together and the experience begins.

The lights plunge us into darkness and a strange voice that makes the spine tingle invites us into a summoning of the spirits.

We place our hands on the table and the seance begins. As our host summons the other guests to participate the table rattles as the spirit reveals itself.

The experience is scary, and will have you on edge the entire time, unsure of where the spirit is, what is going on and why. The host whispers in your ear, which is an unsettling feeling.

The finale though will leave you in utter awe and is so shocking it takes a moment to recover. As we walk out into the daylight people are visibly rattled by this experience.

Both performances are completely different to each other and as you are deprived of your ability to see, your other senses kick in to compensate. This makes each performance seem more real, more scary and more immersive.

Darkfield utilises a signature 360-degree audio along with sensory effects and hyper-realistic sets which trick the mind into believing that you are transported into another dimension.

This is an immersive theatre performance that is innovative, engaging and entertaining. It will separate you from reality and leave you questioning whether it was real. Your brain wants to tell you it’s not real, but with the multi sensory system tells you that it is real. An abstract concept, that is both chilling and brilliant.

Darkfield is now showing at the Arts Centre Forecourt until 16 February.

The honeymoon definitely ain’t over – legendary Aussie rockers THE CRUEL SEA are set to light up the Live At The Gardens stage with a very special performance at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne on Saturday 8 March, 2025, delivering an unforgettable evening of raw energy and homegrown hits under the stars.

Joining THE CRUEL SEA are some of Australia’s most revered and exciting artists – MARK SEYMOUR & THE UNDERTOW, VIKA & LINDA and rising indie-alt rockers LOOSE CONTENT.

Formed in 1987, THE CRUEL SEA carved their place in Australian music history with a genre-blurring sound, fusing blues, roots, surf, rock, soul and cinematic soundscapes, led by charismatic frontman Tex Perkins.  Their albums The Honeymoon Is Over(1993) and Three Legged Dog (1995) catapulted them to national stardom, earning them eight ARIA Awards and cementing their legacy with hits like Better Get a Lawyer, Black Stick, Just A Man and The Honeymoon Is Over.

Their 1993 masterpiece, The Honeymoon Is Over, became the soundtrack of a generation, spending more than a year in the ARIA album chart, solidifying the seminal album its place in Australian history.

This Live At The Gardens show coincides with the release of THE CRUEL SEA’s first album in 23 years, Straight Into The Sun (released 7 March), marking an exciting new chapter in the band’s celebrated career and featuring the return of the classic lineup of Tex Perkins, Jim Elliott (drums), Ken Gormly (bass), Dan Rumour (guitar) and longtime collaborator, Matt Walker (guitar). “The Cruel Sea are back, and it feels so right,” declared Double J, echoing the excitement surrounding their highly anticipated return.

More than 30 years later, their live shows remain electric, with critics hailing their live performances as “a masterclass in atmosphere and grit”.

MARK SEYMOUR & THE UNDERTOW are led by one of Australia’s finest storytellers, Mark Seymour, whose poetic lyricism and emotional narratives have captivated audiences for more than four decades. Known for exploring themes of love, loss, and human resilience, their music blends personal introspection with a reflection on Australian identity and social issues. The group’s latest album,The Boxer, follows the critically acclaimed Slow Dawn, hailed as “arguably the finest album of Seymour’s storied career” (Rhythms). Their live sets feature iconic songs from Mark’s solo work alongside beloved Hunters & Collectors classics.

Dynamic duo VIKA & LINDA are Australia’s favourite singing sisters. They scored their first number one album in 2020 with their anthology ‘Akilotoa. And in 2021, they released The Wait, their first album of original material in 19 years. In 2022, VIKA & LINDA were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for their service to the performing arts.

Byron Bay indie/alt-rock trio LOOSE CONTENT have quickly made a name for themselves playing festivals and touring with legendary acts like Magic Dirt and The Cruel Sea. Inspired by Radiohead, Courtney Barnett and Talking Heads, they blend pop, punk, and art-indie-rock influences. Their latest single, Where The Hollow People Sleep, showcases their unique sound ahead of the release of their debut album, produced by Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen, Powderfinger).

Legendary Irish Comedy Duo Set to Entertain Down Under

Esteemed Irish comedians Pat and Faye Shortt are thrilled to announce that their much-anticipated “Knuckle Down” tour will traverse Australia and New Zealand across April-May 2025. With a repertoire that has charmed audiences worldwide, the father-daughter duo is ready to bring their unique blend of humour and comedic storytelling to Australian and NZ shores.

The Australian tour will commence at Brisbane’s Powerhouse on April 26, followed by Athenaeum Theatre Melbourne on April 30, Sydney’s Factory Theatre on May 2 and The Lounge Chatswood on May 3, before winding up at Astor Theatre, Perth on May 9.  There is also a show confirmed for Auckland’s Star City on May 11.

Previously described as being indigenously Irish in their approach and observation of characters.  “Knuckle Down” doesn’t disappoint. Characters such as “Michael” (Pat Shortt) the hapless builder (Followed weekly on Tik Tok, X, Insta and Facebook by hundreds of thousands) seems to have the answer to all things that are wrong in the world and shares the advice gifted to him by his late grandmother from Tipperary. Another outrageous character is the “mother of the child” (Faye Shortt) at the school railings waiting to pick up her child PJ, it’s not like her at all to talk bad about anyone but she just can’t help herself, sharing her views on the school principal and her tummy tucking friend back from Turkey.

Her debut album, Madres, is a shimmery collection of emotive house, protest chants, club rhythms, and sunlit synths that testifies to dance music’s spiritual nourishment. Dedicated not only to her mother but also to the neurosurgeon who performed life-saving cancer surgery on her. As a token of her gratitude, Kourtesis named the track Vajkoczyfor him, and took him to Berghain.

Whatever it stands for, R.M.F.C. is the brainchild of Buz Clatworthy, from the coastal town of Ulladulla, NSW. Buz started the project in 2018 when he released his first cassette, Hive, Vol. 1, in September 2018, made by Buz playing all the instruments in his bedroom. He soon put a band together and, after some more EPs & singles, they unleashed a ripping LP in Club Hits. One of the finest discs of Rock Music in recent times – with a live show to match the buzz.

His sound layers complex drum grooves, future-funk baselines, and sci-fi squelches, building worlds of Lizard lore and seeing releases on labels from Kalahari Oyster Cult to his own LKR Records.

Following three incredible sold out shows earlier this year, one of music’s most revered singer songwriter guitarists and producers, Todd Rundgren, will return to Australia in early 2025, playing a string of headline shows.

The tour will commence in Melbourne, March 6 at the Corner Hotel, followed by Adelaide’s Lion Arts Factory on March 7, Theatre Royal Castlemaine on March 8, Brisbane’s The Triffid on March 13 and concluding in Sydney with Factory Theatre on March 14 and The Lounge, Chatswood on March 15.

Davey Lane and band will support, as Davey gears up to release his fourth LP, Finally, A Party Record.

ABOUT TODD RUNDGREN 

A Wizard, A True Star. The title of Todd Rundgren’s 1973 solo album aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, video pioneer, producer, recording artist, computer software developer, conceptualist, and interactive artist, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Rundgren began playing guitar as a teenager, going on to found and front The Nazz, the quintessential `60’s psychedelic group. In 1969, he left the band to pursue a solo career, recording his debut offering, the legendary Runt. But it was 1972’s seminal Something/Anything? on which he played all the instruments, sang all the vocal parts, and acted as his own producer, that catapulted Todd into the superstar limelight, prompting the press to unanimously dub him ‘Rock’s New Wunderkind’. It was followed by such landmark LPs as The Hermit of Mink Hollow and the above mentioned A Wizard, A True Star, as well as such hit singles as I Saw The Light, Hello It’s Me, Can We Still Be Friends, and Bang The Drum.

In 1974, Todd formed Todd Rundgren’s Utopia (renamed and reconfigured in 1976 as Utopia), an entirely new approach to the concept of interactive musicianship and embarked on an extensive round of touring and recording. Standout Utopia offerings included Oops! Wrong Planet, Adventures in Utopia, and Oblivion. Along the way, Todd Rundgren’s Utopia combined technical virtuosity and creative passion to create music that initially, for millions, defined the term “progressive rock”, and subsequently, as Utopia, the term “power pop”.

Rundgren’s myriad production projects include albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meat Loaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall And Oates. Rounding out his reputation as rock’s Renaissance Man, Rundgren composed all the music and lyrics for Joe Papp’s 1989 Off-Broadway production of Joe Orton’s Up Against It (the screenplay commissioned by The Beatles for what was meant to have been their third motion picture). He also has composed the music for the hit film Dumb and Dumber, as well as a number of television series, including Pee Wee’s Playhouseand Crime Story.

In 2009 Rundgren performed his iconic 1973 album A Wizard A True Star in concert in its entirety for the first time ever, and several years later did the same with a double bill: Todd & Healing. He has toured with Ringo Starr as an erstwhile member of the All-Starr Band since 1989 and continues to perform with symphony orchestras both domestically and internationally. In 2018 he toured North America with original Utopians Kasim Sulton and Willie Wilcox for the first time in 33 years. His long-awaited autobiography The Individualist, was recently released. 

In 2017 on successive weekends, he was awarded honorary doctorates from both the Berklee School of Music and DePauw University, and in 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Secret Sounds is excited to announce that Glaswegian musician, songwriter and producer ODD LUKE and Sydney singer-songwriter Hannah Brewer (solo) will be opening stages for AURORA’s anticipated Australian tour in February 2025, performing in Fremantle, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

ODD LUKE is the musical project of Andy Black, a seasoned songwriter, producer and session guitarist who has been the live backbone for some of the UK’s biggest stars. From fronting indie-pop bands in his teens to touring with Fatherson and, more recently, as Lewis Capaldi’s touring guitarist, ODD LUKE brings a wealth of experience to his solo work. Growing up on a musical diet of Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Talking Heads, as well as jumping both feet into The Strokes’ glory days, his music blends rich Glasgow heritage with a modern, soulful energy. ODD LUKE’s music is a testament to the powers of authenticity, blending his personal experience with a universal appeal that knows no boundaries. For the indie-pop artist, the journey is just as thrilling as the destination and with his recent debut EP, Surface Tension, he emerges as a solo force to be reckoned with.

Known for her captivating storytelling and distinct musical style, Hannah Brewer grew up in a family of classically trained musicians and was introduced to a variety of instruments and genres early on, playing the trumpet, guitar, French horn and keys. A familiar face on the Sydney songwriting circuit, Brewer has collaborated with a range of artists including Hanni, Chloe Parche, Thomas Porter and Ukiyo, among others. Her debut EP Child of Divorce, showcases her evolution as a talented songwriter, blending sharp, tongue-in-cheek lyrics with poignant reflections on personal experiences. With her clever storytelling, Brewer tackles complex topics with humour and vulnerability.
