⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars
Among the vines and the oversized books the audience crams into whatever space they can find at the sold out show for Anthony Locascio: The Divine Comedy.
Anthony, a Sydney-sider is fond of Melbourne he tells us. After all, it’s the place where he came for his bucks party. A weekend of supposed ending single-dom, drinking enough beer to sink a ship and of course, titties. Like every good bucks party, there has to be titties.
Unfortunately, though Anthony never got the happy ending he wanted and the show takes a turn as he delves into how he ended up at a ten day meditation retreat instead of an alter.
Anthony Locascio is a comic with a big heart, that he obviously wears on his sleeve and the women in the audience can’t help but feel for him, the men on the other hand think he’s a fucking legend, because he got a bucks, but not a wife. He takes us through his experience, often segwaying into other stories, that tie it all together.
During one of these segway’s he does an impression of how Jesus Christ would talk, it’s both clever and stupidly funny. Strangely Jesus sounds exactly like a Western Sydney Lebanese Kebab shop owner- which is absolutely hilarious. His Jesus impersonation could fill an entire show and nobody would be mad about it. Definitely give us more of Lebanese Jesus, that kind of character is comedy gold.
Healing from trauma is hard for anyone, but to create an entire show where the audience laughs along with you takes a special kind of bravery. To take something that must have been incredibly hard and turn it into art is sheer brilliance.
What this kind of show does is help step towards men openly talking about their feelings, and Anthony is leading the way for other men to feel safe enough to express themselves. To give the audience permission to laugh at his experience is incredible, and highly admirable.
Anthony delivers comedy that is both an intelligent argument and a humerus telling of his story, intertwined with anecdotes about his life. He is confident, articulate and very well spoken. He knows when to ad-lib and even when unruly audience members catch him off guard, he rolls with it like a seasoned professional.
Delivering a fantastic show, Locascio proves that Greeks really do have a talent for taking tragedy and turning it into art.
Anthony Locascio: The Divine Comedy is showing until April 19 at Storyville.
