Casey Filips
What a Character
Fri. 10 Apr
Trades Hall – Music Room
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars
This evening’s show is completely sold out, and there is not a single empty seat to witness the man of many characters Casey Filips.
The lights dim and we’re greeted by a security guard. One look at him and you can tell this guy is pretty serious about his job. He has a list, and depending on whether he likes you or not, you’re either in or you’re out. Not everyone makes the cut, and his security camera records everything he sees.
The audience are worried- will they get into this party where everyone seems to have smuggled in an unknown substance or not? And what kind of party is this? Only those on the list get to find out.
The security guard has done his job, and is swiftly replaced by a James Bond style mystery man, who’s on a mission. It’s a mysterious one at that, but with a gun in hand, we’d all better watch out. He’s suave and dangerous all at once.
Next up is the sound guy- he’s here to record sound bites, and well none of us are very good at that, so it takes a few tries to get it right. But when we do, it’s pure gold.
Finally, Saint Peter advises us that we have all died and we’re in purgatory awaiting judgement. Will we be sent to Heaven or Hell, who knows?!
With his cast of many characters Casey Filips brings a show to the stage that is incredibly entertaining and unique. Each character is completely different, and each storyline is different from the last and it flows well.
The show relies heavily on audience participation and with an enthusiastic audience it works well. Filips never breaks character even when the audience participants go off on tangents. It makes for hilarious interactions that keep the audience laughing the whole time. It’s well devised, his improv is exceptional and all up it’s one of the funniest Independent comedy shows this festival.
What Filips has done- and done well is to create a show that is both funny, entertaining and engaging while simultaneously being utterly ridiculous. His physical comedy is done to perfection- just one facial expression and the audience erupts in laughter. Creating one character to deliver a show is challenging, to create multiple characters that have the audience entertained the whole time is sheer brilliance. His cast of characters will leave you in stitches, tears rolling down your face in laughter.
Casey Filips brings a delightful show to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, one that will have audiences laughing long after it’s over. An absolutely brilliant piece of work.
