Vera Blue gives a spellbinding exclusive and intimate performance to a sold-out show at Howler to celebrate her return with powerful new single, ‘In The Corner’ to mark an exciting new chapter.
Support from Medhanit gets the night started with her mix of energetic, electronic production full of emotionally rich, introspective lyrics. She’s joined on stage by her music producer and live guitarist who adds a great dynamic to the performance and together they’ve got great chemistry as they feed off each other’s energy.
It’s her first time playing in Melbourne since she moved so admittedly, she’s a bit nervous, but her housemates and friends are in the room to cheer her on as she shares her latest hit ’Prayer For A Situationship’ and a fantastic cover of 1975’s ‘Somebody Else’.
Vera Blue (aka Celia Pavey) opens with her fiery, hard-hitting track ‘The Way That You Love Me’ with an extra dark and haunting production to set the tone. She flips long red hair from side to side as the strobe flickers and the pounding base reverberates throughout the venue.
Pavey continues with some older songs including ‘Private’, ‘Lie To Me’, ‘Settle’ and ‘All The Pretty Girls’, to showcase her ethereal vocals with emotional charge full of raw vulnerability set to the backdrop of an electro-pop production. She’s comfortable on stage with a commanding stage presence to capture our attention for every note.
“I’ve been in the studio a lot making new music for you. I’ve been delving into new sounds, new worlds, topics, ways of using my voice, working with lots of different people,” reveals Pavey. Vera Blue shares a few new tracks including her brand-new song ‘In The Corner’ and a some special previews of unreleased tracks called ‘Parallel Desires’ and ‘Rituals’.
“The show is called Pre-rituals, and I wanted to give you a taste of what’s to come. It feels like a bit of a ritual we’re sharing together – something really special, exclusive and intimate and close’, she adds.
We’re lucky enough to witness Vera Blue igniting her new era before anyone else gets to hear it. It’s an explosive sound like we’ve never heard before – in full command, with bass-heavy beats and dark experimental sounds paired with her signature falsetto vocals. She channels witchy club energy, ghost-pop seduction and fearless feminine power.
For a bit of fun, she adds a cover of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ with her own melodic spin for a big crowd reaction and effortlessly glides through her biggest hits ‘Lady Powers’, ‘Hold’ and ‘Regular Touch’.
The audience cheers for the inevitable encore of ‘Rushing Back’ her collaboration with Flume and we’re left with a promise that Vera Blue will be back real soon with a new album.
