When pondering promo strategies for ‘Good Citizens’ — the resounding title track of her new album with her band, The Last Drinks — Cash Savage had a flash of inspiration.

Rather than perform the song herself, she enlisted a legion of men — the Good Citizens Choir — to give voice to her incendiary lyrics;

“Everybody’s moving to the suburbs
and they’re all asking if you’re coming too
and they’re all watching MasterChef
and swearing at the girls on the TV”

The men’s faces are sombre, their voices decisive, reaching a crescendo at the song’s conclusion — “Get f**ked if you think I’m gonna be one of them”.

This simple device of inviting men to give voice to her lyrics has resulted in something very powerful. A vision of men standing in solidarity with women and the LGBTQI community. A call to Australian men to stand together and say “No”. This is not okay.

It’s a message which hits hard, at this time of a national crisis in domestic violence, which is killing one woman every week. A time when the Prime Minister has invoked outdated anti-discrimination laws to deny fairness and equality to LGBTQI children and teachers. Cash Savage’s message to men, voiced by the men of the Good Citizens Choir, could not be more clear and urgent — Stand with us. Break your silence. Add your voice to the chorus of those saying no to violence and systemic injustice.

Praised as an album with a message, ‘Good Citizens’ has welcomed glowing reviews since its September release. The overwhelming response to the album has attracted feature slots for community radio stations across the country including PBS and RRR’s Album of the Week.

“Good Citizens is more evenly measured, her band even tighter, and it’s her best set of songs to date. You won’t hear much that’s better than this in 2018.” 4 stars, The Guardian

Tickets to the Good Citizens National Tour are on sale now and selling fast. Following the first sell out in their hometown, a second show has been added in Melbourne.
