| In a thrilling development for Brisbane’s live music scene, Crowbar — the renowned indie venue known for championing alternative, punk, and heavy music — is set to take over one of the city’s most loved music institutions, The Zoo. This move marks a new chapter for both venues, ensuring The Zoo’s legacy continues while expanding Crowbar’s growing influence across Australia’s live music industry.
After 32 years of hosting live music, The Zoo announced it would close its doors in July 2024, causing shock and disappointment among the music community and longtime patrons. Now, with Crowbar stepping in, the beloved venue will continue as a cornerstone of Fortitude Valley’s live music scene.
The move brings a sense of nostalgia for Crowbar owner Trad Nathan who has a long history with the venue.“The Zoo has been an institution in Brisbane for over three decades, Crowbar intends to honour the amazing path laid before us and continue offering great events for years to come. As a former punter, band member, booker and promoter, playing The Zoo was a great achievement for aspiring bands, we’re excited to be able to keep music within its walls.”
Crowbar Brisbane, first opened in 2012 by Tyla Dombroski and Trad Nathan, quickly became a staple of the city’s heavy music scene. Known for its artist-driven ethos, intimate atmosphere, and dedication to supporting underground acts, Crowbar earned a reputation as a haven for live music fans. In 2018, the team expanded to Sydney, making Crowbar an essential stop on the East Coast touring circuit.
Crowbar’s original Brisbane location in Fortitude Valley closed in 2020 due to financial pressures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, four years later, the team is excited to breathe new life into The Zoo, preserving its rich history while injecting Crowbar’s signature energy and inclusivity values, ensuring that all patrons can enjoy the world-class live music experience that both Crowbar and The Zoo are renowned for. |
