Under the moniker færy, Byron Bay artist Liana Cornell delves into themes of love, healing and nature. Drawing from her eclectic background, færy’s debut album is a sonic journey – equal parts untamed spirit and mythological rebellion.
Building on previous singles “ostara”, “blýth”, “anam cara” and “beltane”, rising explores healing through sound and ritual. The album’s release on Samhain – the witches’ new year – marks a powerful moment of rebirth and introspection. færy’s blend of sound healing and alternative indie creates an experience that is both peaceful and beautiful.
Speaking of the album, færy says “Designed to help retune your body and mind, rising harnesses the ancient practice of music as medicine, reconnecting listeners to the original purpose of sound: to heal. Each track is crafted with intention, offering a space for personal transformation, emotional release, and inner balance.”
The album opens with “athame”, a powerful invocation that symbolises the cutting through of reality and initiates a sacred journey, reflecting the essence of Pagan circle casting and the healing energies that resonate throughout the record. Each track corresponds to significant moments in the Wiccan calendar, with “yule” celebrating the rebirth of light, “‘imbolc” heralding the first signs of spring and “ostara” representing balance and renewal.
Blending ethereal soundscapes, tribal rhythms and Solfeggio frequencies, the album’s focus track “ritual” invites listeners into a world where love transcends appearances. Born from a personal piece of poetry and partly recorded whilst lost on the way to a temple in a Kyoto forest, “ritual” features the powerful line “I birth worlds from in between my legs”, celebrating the raw power of inner beauty and personal transformation.
