Intent To Harm from Brisbane, Australia, release their debut single, “Drained Of Life”. Available everywhere now via Vicious Instinct Records.
Featuring some familiar faces from the Australian underground, including members of Internal Devour, Splatterpuss and Body Prison, this new act is built on the foundations of proper old-school brutality: filthy riffs and knuckle-dragging grooves.
However, to set the scene and provide some backstory, Intent To Harm came together through severe adversity and a determination to push through genuinely hard times. Formed by Matt Turkington, formerly the vocalist for Internal Devour, Splatterpuss and Alter Idem, as a deeply personal outlet during unimaginable struggle. Following multiple spinal surgeries that resulted in life-threatening complications, requiring surgeons to cut through his abdomen to access his spine. These surgeries significantly compromised his ability to perform the kind of vocals required in heavy bands, leaving him unsure if he would ever be able to perform again.
During his recovery, and having never played guitar before, Matt started teaching himself to play while lying down. He began writing songs as a way to stay connected to heavy music and to distract himself from the intense pain he was enduring.
What started as a personal coping mechanism quickly evolved from bedroom demos into a full band.
Longtime friend and former Internal Devour bandmate Tom Logan joined on bass, while drummer Connor McLaughlin was brought in from the United States as a session drummer. When it came time to choose a vocalist, the band wanted someone who could further amplify the aggressive nature of the music. The choice was obvious, and after hearing a demo, Daniel Macdonald was brought in to complete the line-up.
Through intense adversity and with a solid crew now in place, something powerful, positive and essential has emerged through an incredibly challenging time. Intent To Harm is as advertised and combines the aggressive nature of death metal with the groove of hardcore. The result can be heard on their debut single, “Drained Of Life”, which marks only the beginning…
Turkington expressed that although this was the first song he wrote on guitar, and his ability and songwriting have progressed, it was important for him to put this out into the world as the true beginning of Intent To Harm.
