After taking out VB Hard Yards’ inaugural competition last year, Byron Bay’s Mini Skirt have recorded a split 7″ with iconic Aussie rockers the Cosmic Psychos.
As part of Victoria Bitter’s ongoing commitment to backing live Aussie rock, the legendary beer not only rewarded Mini Skirt’s killer performance at the Lansdowne with a sweet $5k in cash, but also funded the recording, mixing and creation of the 7″. Mini Skirt recorded new track Fun Police at A Sharp studios with Nick Franklin, and the track smacks of the band’s unmistakably insouciant charisma.
Contrary to their reputation, Psychos didn’t phone this one in either. As well as contributing their classic ‘Nice Day To Go To The Pub’ they went ahead and completely re-worked Victoria Bitter’s iconic anthem, to reflect the trials of every day musos.
Premiering on Pilerats yesterday, the VB anthem is available exclusively via the VB Hard Yards 7″, limited copies of which are up for grabs at Psychos and Mini Skirt’s respective web stores now as well as being available on the forthcoming VB Hard Yards tour. KLP’s heading back to the dance floor, today releasing her monster new single ‘Venus x Mars’. The single takes KLP back to her dance music roots for a driving slinky house number, guaranteed to get bodies moving on the dance floor this spring.

The New York based quasi-collective has gone from the best kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Snarky Puppy seamlessly fuses a deep knowledge and respect for musical tradition with sonic and conceptual innovation in a way that can reach the most critical or most carefree audience. This convergence of musicians from white and black America have performed regularly with artists like Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kirk Franklin, Justin Timberlake and Marcus Miller among many others.
Formed in Texas 12 years ago by exceptional young musicians, the band is a collective that is orchestrated by bassist Michael League, whose creative grass roots approach to a tougher than ever industry has created a new model for independent artists.
The last four years have brought dramatic changes for Snarky Puppy. After a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred/New York-based quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world. But as the category names for all three of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016 and 2017), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”
Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 25 members in regular rotation. They each maintain busy schedules as sidemen (with such artists as Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and D’Angelo), producers (for Kirk Franklin, David Crosby, and Salif Keïta), and solo artists (many of whom are on the band’s indy label, GroundUP Music). At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. Japan, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico all have representation in the group’s membership. But more than the cultural diversity of the individual players, the defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively.

As festival season approaches, more lineups are dropping and the emptier our bank accounts are getting. St Jerome’s Laneway Festival is turning 15 this year, and their majorly hyped lineup has finally dropped.
The festival will hit Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne and Fremantle in February 2019.
The festival is headlined by Gang of Youths and Courtney Barnett with other acts in the mix like What So Not, Jorja Smith, Methyl Ethel, Middle Kids, Denzel Curry, Rex Orange County and Parquet Courts.
Organisers say that 53% of this years lineup consists of Aussie acts, while the gender split is 64% male to 34% female, based on the permanent members of each act.

There are few heavy metal bands that have managed to scale the heights that Judas Priest have during their 40-year career. It’s rare that a career gets a second shot, let alone a whole second act, but then Anthrax isn’t your average band. More than the group who let a fledgling Metallica crash on their studio floor in 1983, who became a lightning rod for geekdom by immortalizing Judge Dredd with “I Am The Law” in 1987, who enthusiastically raised a middle finger to the critics and unimaginative fans alike by collaborating with rappers Public Enemy in 1991, and who – in 2011 with the release of ‘Worship Music’ – proved that classic albums aren’t a bygone concept, the story of Anthrax is one of gritty determination in the face of outrageous odds, and one of the Big Four alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Metallica!
Since their inception in 1998, Pennsylvanian rockers Halestorm have toured extensively with a diverse variety of artists, including Eric Church, Avenged Sevenfold, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, ZZ Top and Evanescence. Polish death metal bandBehemoth are no strangers to blasphemy. Over the course of the last 27 years, they’ve pushed the boundaries of black metal and heresy alike. Behemoth have been pivotal in the establishment of the Polish extreme underground metal scene. Time and again, the government of their native Poland has charged them with various “crimes” such as tearing up a bibleonstage in 2007 and using the Polish coat of arms on a Behemoth t-shirt in 2017. We welcome their sacrilege with open arms to Download 2019!
For the uninitiated, punk super-group and cover band extraordinaires Me First and the Gimme Gimmes consists of Lagwagon frontman Joey Cape on the guitar, Scott Shiflett (Face to Face), on the other guitar, Lagwagon drummer and Fat Wreck utility superhero Dave Raun on the skins, and are rounded out by Jay Bentley (Bad Religion) and incomparable crooner Spike Slawson (The Re-Volts and Uke-Hunt). Together, they are an outfit that has always operated more like a beer-hall Pussycat Dolls than a regular mortal band—contain so much hot air, so much pomp, so much attitude, that it’s a wonder that these guys can still manage to pull their five individual tour buses into the same parking lot, put their differences aside and belt out the ballads without clawing each other’s eyes out. But they do, for the love of the fans, the music, and of course, the applause. Be it Motown, Country, show tunes, Japanese Pop (sung in Japanese!), these seasoned punk rock pros have triumphed on every occasion in a way only the Gimmes could!

After forming in Massachusetts in 1990, metal core architects Convergemade their debut with 1994’s ‘Halo in a Haystack’. Penning catchy and confrontational songs that touch on rape culture, street harassment, the gender wage gap, transphobia, and other vitally pertinent social issues. They have been touring relentlessly since the release of their debut self-titled full LP in 2015. War On Women are neither a crew of young bucks nor a contagion of seasoned legends. They don’t fit neatly into metalloid machismo or hulking hardcore tropes. They have nothing to prove, and there’s nothing more delightfully dangerous than that.

The new single What We Got blasts away from As A Rival’s usual vein of punk rock showing a maturity and diversity in their songwriting, delivering a power punk ballad that will hit even the hardest of hearts. It’s about when someone you love is struggling through a dark time in their lives, holding onto the tiniest of threads, and doing everything possible to comfort them through it. It is an anthem about holding on to the good around you when you’re almost ready to give in to the flames. Pete Cerni, vocalist for the band, said that “There are times when we are tested – things that we love, that we live for are put to the sword and we’re left to question ‘is it all worth it’? It’s hard not to focus on the negative. It’s hard enough when it’s your own fight, but watching it happen to someone close to you can be debilitating and make you feel helpless. Some people glide in and out naturally, but others will smile at you while they fight to destroy everything you’ve built.” ‘Griefers’ encompasses the hurt you have to face to crawl out of the mess and deal with the aftermath. Life is about the fight for what you believe in. ‘Griefers’ acknowledges these trying times – the times when you do fall but that it’s ok, as long as you climb even higher as a result.
Recorded at Homesurgery Recordings, the album was produced by Tom Larkin (Shihad) with Sam K Sproull and Jon Grace. The sessions started out with a challenge – complete 50 demos within a 2 month period. A challenge that was met with gusto. 50+ songs later having explored a myriad of styles touched on in previous releases, these sessions enabled As A Rival to hone their craft and evolve their sound. The result: a 12 song punk rock deluge, tackling themes of betrayal, deceit and defiance
‘Griefers’ pays homage to a number of influences and genres culminating into what is As A Rival’s best release to date. From the raw gallop of lead single, ‘Bring Out The Dead’ to the power and grace of ‘What We Got’. The anthemic hooks of ‘Head In The Clouds’ to the burst of energy that is ‘Coup De Main’. The album is full of riffs, hooks and sing-along choruses that keep you coming back for more.

One of the metal worlds most recognisable, praised and iconic figures, Scott Ian, will be in Australia for a series of spoken word events this September! The co-founding rhythm guitarist of ‘Big 4’ legends Anthrax practically invented Thrash Metal and in a career spanning nearly four decades remains as vital as ever.
Scott’s rapid fire riffs, unmistakable crunchy tone and incisive lyrics continue to spawn generations of new bands who wear Anthrax’s influence on their tattooed sleeves.
Now, fans can hear and see Scott on stage in an entirely different way, behind a mike, telling wildly entertaining road stories about the people he has met, crazy experiences he has had and all the mischief, shenanigans and back stage antics he and his peers have gotten into over the past 38 years of touring the world!
In Scott’s own words, “One Man Riot is what I call my talking show because the pretension of saying I am doing a ‘Spoken Word’ show is too much to bear. This isn’t a poetry reading. This isn’t an evening of sensitive discourse. It’s an evening of ridiculous truth. It’s me talking (swearing) about this insane life I’ve led over the last 38 years, the people I’ve met and the shit that’s happened. And when I’m done swearing, you can ask me anything you want, the floor is yours. Cheers my friends.”
Bursting onto the scene in 1984 with Fistful Of Metal, Scott and Anthrax have sold over 10 million albums, receiving multiple Gold and Platinum awards, been nominated for a bunch of Grammy’s and continue to write career besting albums to this day! 2016’s For All Kings debuted in the US Billboard Top 200 at number 9 and the worldwide charts at number 8! While widely known as the face of Anthrax, Scott is also a constant and extremely recognizable figure in the worlds of horror, comics, movies and television.
What does Scott get up to? Well…. In the early 90’s it was Scott’s idea to cover Public Enemy’sBring The Noise which brought the two worlds of rap and metal together like never before and saw Chuck D, Flavor Flav and the rest of PE touring the world with Anthrax, kicking the asses of expectations and stereotypes everywhere they went. Scott also takes no credit good or bad for any musical genre that came after… Scott hosted the Rock Show on VH1 for a year and got to interview Ozzy Osbourne while dressed as Gene Simmons for Halloween.
That went well. In 2009 Scott wrote Lobo: Highway To Hell for DC Comics and wrote his second series for DC featuring The Demon which is being scheduled for release. Scott and Anthrax are part of the iconic ‘Big 4’ metal bands alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth. Scott had the highlight of his career in Anthrax when The Big 4 played Yankee Stadium in NYC on Sept 14, 2011.
That day was also officially proclaimed Anthrax Day in the Bronx. Suck that everyone in high school. Scottʼs autobiography Iʼm The Man The Story of That Guy from Anthraxwas released October 14, 2014, and with all modesty, it got great reviews everywhere! Even the New York Times book reviewer liked it. You should read it.
Scottʼs second book Access All Areas – Stories From A Hard Rock Life was released in December of 2017. The book is comprised of twenty-three ridiculous stories from Scottʼs life. If you hate laughing, this book is not for you.
Scott has taken his stories on the road doing Spoken Word tours of the U.S., Canada, the U.K. & Europe to critical acclaim. More importantly, the people that paid to see the shows really liked them. Scott hosts the horror FX show Bloodworks for the Nerdist Channel. Scott got to be a walker on season 5 episode 12 of The Walking Deadattacking Rick Grimes until he got a metal pole through the head by Rickʼs son Carl.
For the new season of Bloodworks, Scott recently filmed an episode from the set of Game of Thrones. Now he can retire. Scott is also happily married to Pearl Aday, daughter of Meat Loaf and they are in a band together called Motor Sister. Scott and Anthrax are currently on the Slayer farewell tour in the U.S. Scott hopes this farewell tour lasts about ten years.
