Psychopathically fast yet equally colourful, being drenched in Cedric’s surreal lyrical landscape was something else. When I came back to Australia I listened to Relationship Of Command driving from Bellingen to Coffs Harbour for about a year straight. 90% of the reason I went to Splendour In The Grass 2016 was for this band. God I love them and their afros.”

BFG Division (Doom Soundtrack) – Mick Gordon

A couple years ago, I found myself in a musical drought as far as Heavy Music and started dabbling in a lot of Drum & Bass and EDM as a result. After a week or so into this a rumor about a new Doom Soundtrack started circling, being hailed as a new creative powerhouse and fusion off all things heavy and electronic.

Having this hype but no official release yet and being composed by Australia’s own Mick Gordon, I was intrigued enough to give it a shot. After searching high and low, I finally stumbled onto it.

What followed was 9 minutes of pure sonic onslaught. Within seconds I found myself stomping and skipping through the room bewildered by what had just hit me. As heavy as heavy can be, creative in sound design and uniquely groovy enough to make anyone move – it was the perfect response to the game it was intended for. It’s since become a huge cult success and a band favorite for us (which is evidenced in a video of us throwing down to it at a peaceful BBQ we were having).

If you’re looking for something new and exciting or need to get pumped, this is a must to check out.

Wesley’s Theory – Kendrick Lamar

God damn, this track is a bop! This is my ‘okay, you got 4 hours sleep, but you have to work for the next 9 hours’ driving to work wake up ritual… As a bassist, the constant, almost hyperactive, melodic noodling of Thundercats filtered bass work that lays the foundation of the song pulls me in every time – its fierce and unrelentlessly catchy as it weaves its way around Kendrick’s flow. Like the rest of the album that follows, it holds some uniquely excellent one-liners that, for me, are up their with some of the modern hip hop greats and ultimately sets the rest of the tracks to a ridiculously high standard. Its lyrically complex and touches on some rock hard issues, but it does it covered with an energetically extravagant quirky smile.

Osaka Punch – Stonk.

One of the funniest and most engaging band’s in the Brisbane scene. We’ve been mates for years and they never fail to impress live, on record, in videos, nothing.

This track drunkenly stumbles through meaty ass riffs, synthy ass breakdowns, spacey ass bridges, just big ol’ ass on everything. It screams “Play me live you bloody crumb”.

We would like fries with that Osaka Punch. We really would.

Rage Against The Machine – Rage Against The Machine

Would we really be the musicians we we’re today if this album didn’t exist? No. Probably one of the most, if not the most influential rock albums of all time in my opinion. I have seen ALL of my all time favourite bands at least once, except for RATM. However I can almost guarantee I’ll wear the needle through this vinyl before I get sick of listening to it.

 

The Preatures – Girlhood

Girlhood is one of the many awesome representations of lady power in the Australian music scene at the moment. Highly recommend the songs ‘Yanada’, ‘Magick’ and ‘Cherry Ripe’. Tasty electro femme pop that reminds you of Blondie and The Cranberries, while still reinforcing that it sounds like Australia. Love it.

 

INXS – Kick

If you get to the “living room dance party” part of the night, (which in TKM we so often do) this is almost always the first record thats gets put on. I dare you to get from start to finish of ‘New Sensation’ sitting still. Don’t actually try it, it’s a waste of time and can’t be done.

 

 

Biffy Clyro – MTV Unplugged Live at the Roundhouse

Recently in The Kite Machine we’ve all jumped head first into loving this band. This album was given to me as a birthday present this year, with a double disk CD and DVD.

I’ve always said that the only way to know if a song is really great is to strip it back, play it acoustic and see if it still holds up. Not sure if this set is “stripped back” necessarily but it’s definitely acoustic and it definitely holds up.

 

Paul Simon – Graceland

One of my favourite albums of all time, in my opinion there is not one single thing wrong with this album. The musicianship, songwriting, performance and production on this album is simply remarkable. Good on ya Pauly.

This is an absolute classic – made even cooler as its one my Mum bought when it came out! ‘Black Dog,’ ‘Rock & Roll’ AND ‘Stairway’ all on side one… I mean come on.

Besides, ‘When the Levee Breaks’ could be my fave Zepp Tune… but can you really pick a favourite?

Father John Misty – I Love You Honeybear

Gotta dig the unique packaging and artwork on this already killer sounding album. This one makes my list because of the “instruction manual” that invites you to get into the mindspace of Josh Tillman as you listen to the songs.

The Doors – Self Titled

Love this album. I had a brand new unopened copy of Strange Days which was borrowed (without permission) and taken to Adelaide by a friend. I was understandably keen to get that back as It was my only Doors record, so when Melbourne legends The Burbs went on tour to Adelaide I asked them to hook up with my mate and see the safe return of my LP. Somewhere along the line there was a mishap and my Strange Days returned as a pristine “The Doors” self titled. Some sort of karma never wanted me to have Strange Days I guess.

Rolling Stones – Miss you (12” single)

This is another original maxi single hand-me-down by my Mum. Absolute party starter that is essential to the collection.

James Brown – Sex machine (12” Single)

A good friend of mine bought me this for my 18th birthday – mint condition original maxi single. I didn’t have enough money to invest in a record player until a little while later – but it’s the first vinyl that entered the collection, so is very special to me.

Kane

Midnight Oil – 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

Midnight Oil is probably one of the first bands I listened to. I first heard this album on cassette, then bought the CD, downloaded it on iTunes and now I own it on vinyl. The classic rock bangers mixed in with twisted soundscapes is something I can’t get enough of to this day. My very first concert was Midnight Oil in Geelong in 2000, then I got to see them twice last year in Melbourne and Hanging Rock – 17 years later. You might say the Oils are a dear old friend.

Tool – Opiate

This half studio, half live EP is no frills, no BS Tool, complete raw in its production and performance. I used to play drums to this record in the front studio of my parent’s house back in the day, top off, headphones on and destroying cymbals to ‘Cold and Ugly’ and ‘Jerk Off’. There is an awesome bootleg out there on YouTube, Live at JD Dobbs 1992 that has these tunes on it, it’s a small room to a small crowd but it is in no way a small performance that’s for sure, check it out.

Cog – Just Visiting

This brilliant double EP is COG in its rawest form, a rerelease of their earliest work cut into translucent red and green vinyl. This record is wall to wall prog rock heaviness expressed with honesty and passion. I’ve followed COG since I first saw them almost 15 years ago, I’ve go all their albums, I’ve got T-shirts, beanies, stubby holders even a COG wrist band, you might say I’m somewhat of a superfan.

Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense

This is amazing live album is riddled with bangers like ‘Psycho killer’, ‘Life During Wartime’ and ‘Once in a lifetime’. It doesn’t get much groovier than Talking Heads. This is one of the first albums I ever remember listening to as a little fella, ‘Take me to the River’ was a favourite back then. Do yourself a favour and watch the live show, it is a masterpiece.

Metallica – Master Of Puppets

This is legendary record really shows why Metallica are one of the biggest heavy bands of all time, inspiring a whole generation bands and musicians. I love how the album opens with delicate acoustic guitars and then throws you right into ‘Battery’, there is no let up as it’s followed by ‘Master of Puppets’. It’s fast, heavy and James’s voice is killer.

p style=”text-align: center;”>Best known as the frontman of the Australian rock n roll luminaires, Eskimo Joe, acclaimed songwriter Kav Temperley is stepping out solo.  The first taste of his upcoming album dropped today in the form of new single, Pollyanna – an ominous reflection on the relativity of happiness – the single will be received instantly with all digital album pre-orders.  Pollyanna precedes Kav Temperley’s highly anticipated debut solo album All Your Devotion, a collection of ruminating, thoughtful, and effecting songs from one of this country’s greatest talents, set for release digitally and on vinyl on September 28.  To celebrate what is the culmination of years of hard work, Kav will be hitting the road in October and November this year, kicking off on October 5 at The Milk Factory in Brisbane, and moving through the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Belgrave, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Fremantle, Margaret River, before wrapping up in Bunbury at Prince of Wales on November 3.

Pollyanna is not quite as happy-go-lucky as its namesake, but despite a moody demeanour, there is a tenacious, almost stubborn sense of positivity that lurks throughout.  With careful, considered instrumentation and an arrangement that allows deep strings, plucky piano and sparkling guitar to each complement the other, Pollyanna is a deeply effecting piece of music, made even more so with Kav’s idiosyncratic, expressive vocal delivery and lyricism.  Kav reflects on the inspiration behind the track, saying, “A friend once told me that our happiness is always relative, whether we live in a war zone or paradise – our happiness always swings back to the same place.
I had just lost my marriage and the band had decided to take a break, all of these things that defined me were now no longer around.  It was one of the first times in my life I felt like a stranger just rolling along, but I realised that amongst all of this I was a Pollyanna, someone despite the bad news always looks on the bright side.  This was a song I was singing to myself to remember to stay light.”

All Your Devotion is, quite simply, a daring testament of renewal.  Produced alongside Pip Norman (Troye Sivan, Jarryd James, Urthboy) and John Castle (Megan Washington, Vance Joy, Bertie Blackman), the album delicately outlines the arc of newfound romance; the rapture, with Pollyanna and Queen Of My Heart, the hesitation, with This Is The Love and Devotion, and the surrender, with High and When You Run.  All Your Devotion explores new sonic territory for Kav, as sparse and uncluttered production, reminiscent of pop and folk conventions, takes precendence over rock n roll ways.  Kav reflects on some of the inspiration behind the album, saying, “We spend our lives building barricades to protect us, both physical and emotional.  But, as well as protect, these barricades can also isolate and suffocate.  All Your Devotion is about tearing those down and starting over, through all the fears and hope…It’s about growing up and moving on. It’s being courageous enough to live and to love again.”

Kav Templerley is set to perform tracks from All Your Devotion live to audiences across the country come October and November this year, as Eskimo Joe also prepare to hit the stage for the Under The Southern Stars festival run.  It’s going to be a busy few months for the skilled musician, but anticipation is high, as Kav says, “(For the All Your Devotion tour,) it’s just going to be me with an acoustic guitar and kick drum strapped to my back.  I want these shows to be raw and real so people feel like they’ve been there right next to me through the writing of this record.”

Set Before Us reveal new Avalanche music video

Swedish alt-melodic metalcore pioneers Set Before Us have revealed a new music video for the song “Avalanche”. The video was directed by Liftamountain and shot on location in Nynas Slott, Sweden. Watch it right now at this location.

“We wanted to do something we never did before with the video for Avalanche” says guitarist Niklas Edstrom. “We shot this video indoors, with each member being isolated in different rooms. Thanks to the dynamic camera work of Liftamountain, it feels as if you are soaring through the different rooms of the house!” Bassist Hampus Andersson continues, “We filmed on the hottest day of May, and despite soaking through our cloths, towels, and drinking our body weight in water, we are extremely pleased with how the video turned out!”

Set Before Us will release their upcoming debut full-length album entitled Vitae on August 31, 2018 via Eclipse Records. The album was produced by Dino Medanhodzic (Smash into Pieces, Adept, The Unguided) at Radionika Studios. Vitae features eleven brand new songs that re-write the boundaries of metalcore as a genre. Queens Of The Stone Age’s hugely anticipated Australian tour kicks off in two weeks – the final stop on the band’s Villains World Tour, following 13 months of epic shows worldwide.

Joshua Homme, Troy Van Leeuwen, Dean Fertita, Jon Theodore and Michael Shuman are no strangers to Australia. As Homme attested on their previous visit: “Everybody who knows me knows that Australia is my home away from home”.

In July 2017, Queens of the Stone Age launched the Villains World Tour right here, including a special show in the tropics of Darwin, NT. Now, it’s Tasmania’s turn.

In addition to the band’s already announced dates, Frontier Touring is thrilled to announce an exclusive, intimate one-off performance in Hobart: Queens Of The Stone Age will perform a full acoustic show at Nolan Gallery, Mona (Museum of Old and New Art) onMonday 3 September.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Royal Hobart Hospital Children’s Ward, to assist in buying equipment and support the hospital’s paediatric services team. Tickets for this special show go on sale this Thursday 16 August from 4pm AEST via mona.net.au.

Bristling with attitude, the record offers an insight into a musicianship that is continuing to thrive off the back of successes that followed previous single releases in ‘YUPPIES’ and ‘HEAD TALK’. Sophisticated Dingo have found their rhythm with ‘Tastes Just Like The Real Thing’; that rhythm is gritty, bustling and unashamedly brazen.

Fresh off the back of an explosive set at Fuji Rock Festival and sold-out Australian, US & UK headline tours, The Teskey Brothers join us with gorgeous Motown-inspired soul and blues. The four-piece band from Yarra Valley have been wowing audiences around the world with their infectious live shows.

Talented songsmith Jess Locke is known for beautiful dreamy guitar pop. Her album ‘Universe’ received a four-star review in Rolling Stone and was long-listed for the Australian Music Prize. Multi-national five piece band Amaru Tribewill introduce audiences to Oceanic Cumbia, a unique sound with songlines deeply connected to the groups roots and mythology.

Hands Like Houses have revealed “Monster” – the second single from their new album -Anon. set for release on October 12 via UNFD. Alongside the single reveal, Hands Like Houses have announced an exclusive run of album intimate launch shows during release week in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Built around the line “I can feel it coming alive”, “Monster” is about running from yourself when you feel the beast inside roaring to life, and everyone needs to get out of the way.

Frontman Trenton Woodley explains the creative process behind “Monster”: It’s crazy how things sometimes come to life when you just let them be. I remember this song, as a demo, always having this raw, rowdy energy, even when it didn’t have much else. It was actually one of the last tracks to come together vocally, for no other reason than it just happened to be further down the list I had of songs and ideas I was putting together – I feel like it snuck up on me. At that point we were really diving into the idea of ‘deliberate instinct’ that shaped the album and the hook line ‘I can feel it coming alive’ we had demoed initially as a placeholder just had a feel that I couldn’t shift to any other lyric. That became the ground zero we built on. 

“Because of the raw and gritty tone of the instrumentals, it was really important to get the vocals to a place where they complemented that attitude and vibe – so it was a lot of fun pushing and exploring my voice with new techniques and textures. The ‘sound’ of the verse vocals was actually me being hunched over a microphone, on the edge of a very low couch, with a small bottle of Jameson and a regularly topped up cup of steaming black coffee parked on the table next to me. It was literally everything I’ve taught and been taught NOT to do, and we threw that all out the window, because it was what the song needed to come to life.  

“The lyrics grew from the idea that every one of us has a part of ourselves that we hate – a monster that seems to come to the surface when we turn our backs for a moment. I wanted to bake in the fear, the panic, the self-doubt of bringing something to life, but also the confidence and swagger of accepting that you are both Jekyll and Hyde – and owning it. I scribbled down in my notepad ‘Yeah, I’m running from my problems and you probably should too’. Even though it wasn’t ever meant to be a lyric, it was the attitude that I wanted to carry through.”

The fourth album in the band’s discography, -Anon. takes the unique sound Hands Like Houses have been cultivating over the past 10 years and injects it with a big dose of fresh, modern rock’n’roll. The most charismatic album of their career, their fourth record marries who Hands Like Houses are as individuals into an assured yet fun collection of songs that begs the audience to take a deeper listen.

Recorded at Steakhouse Studios in Hollywood with producer Colin Brittain (5 Seconds of Summer / All Time Low), conceptually “-Anon.” is a statement on the duality of the creative process – the idea that music can be shared or heard in passing and can still resonate with people even when the artist is unknown to the listener. Like an anonymous poem with no author, it doesn’t matter who created it, as its strength lies in its relatability. -Anon. is Hands Like Houses giving a lyrical voice to other people’s stories and musically creating atmosphere and emotions within the listener to be shared for years to come.

To celebrate Hands Like Houses’ return, the band will hit the East Coast for a small run of shows to launch their new album -Anon. during release week. Hands Like Houses won’t play venues this small again and tickets are extremely limited in each city.
