Chinese Museum – Jade Room.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Five Stars
The Jade Room is looking especially fancy this evening with plastic plants giving it a nice atmosphere.
Casually hiding behind the TV is Sri lankan comic Rowan Thambar, popping out to announce,
“Please, welcome to the stage, Rowan Thambar. He’s behind the TV the whole time. Are you kidding me? You saw me, didn’t you? Yeah, you saw me. I’m sorry.”
It’s a funny way to start the show, and he’s off to a great start. The entire front row is Sri Lankan, and Thambar has them in awe the moment he picks up the microphone.
Over the next hour, Thambar entertains us with anecdotes about growing up Sri Lankan in Melbourne and the exceptionally comical run in he had with his neighbour involving a dog pram and some badly thrown dog shit.
He tells us about how when meeting Fat Man Scoop he wasn’t mis-gendered he was racially misidentified.
Thambar tells a great story, it segments off in different directions and each bit is funny, flowing well and keeping the momentum. You don’t necessarily have to be Sri Lankan to understand the jokes, but watching audience members that are silently agreeing with him is funny in itself.
Having worked as a comedy writer on The Project, it’s easy to see that Thambar had a real talent for keeping a good story engaging, funny and interesting.
His therapist with the whitest name in the world gets a mention, his best friend who also happens to be his wife makes an appearance as we get a look into his life. It’s funny, honest and authentic and really well written comedy.
Thanbar’s delivery is exceptional- he knows just when to pause, when to let the jokes breathe and when to tell the audience off for not laughing. He’s polished his performance to make it seem effortless, and it’s well done.
While the whole front row have never felt more seen or validated in their entire lives, you don’t have to be Sri Lankan to enjoy the show. Thanbar’s comedy appeals to everyone, he simply a naturally funny guy.
The best thing about live comedy is being let into the world of someone you’ve never met and being taken on a wild adventure, laughing along the way. Thanbar presents a spectacular show that is extremely well written and performed with such ease he makes it look like a walk in the park.
Rowan Thanbar’s show is a delightful misadventure of crazy happenings that make for an hour of really great entertainment.
