A screen lights up and a video of a woman in Thailand plays, introducing us to Jayne Steer.
Self described as the world’s most confident, self-assured hashtag girl boss, and then she ruined her life for no reason.
And so begins the story of Jayne’s Addiction- from her trauma with an abusive mother, an uninvolved Father and some serious Mummy issues that led to a $60,000 stint in a Thailand rehab centre.
Jayne’s story is emotional and triumphant, she uses dark humour to make the audience laugh. She is honest, vulnerable and self deprecating.
Jayne’s story is one through of hope and with all the trauma she’s endured one that is amazing to have survived. She tells it with humility, and grace- and at times the humour is so dark it’s brilliant.
To be able to take such a heavy story and turn it into comedy is courageous, and Jayne should be applauded for that. She delivers her tale with confidence, it’s well written and she’s well spoken. Even when the subject matter becomes difficult she bravely continues, throwing in a game show style vote called
“ Guess Which Date I Hit Rock Bottom”.
In the space of an hour, Jayne delivers a performance that for anyone that’s ever dealt with childhood trauma is highly relatable. It’s vulnerable, raw, emotional and funny. It’s a show that will have you hoping that it all works out for Jayne, and it’s simply brilliant.
