Roisin McAlinden –
Fairytale: Ending-A funny feminist anti-fairytale.
Bard’s Apothecary
Melbourne Fringe Festival
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Four Stars
In a basement at the base of the stairs stands Irish comedian Roisin McAlinden, a brick wall adding to the minimalist charm.
Roisin introduces herself to the audience and one by one, asks the audience our names, kicking off with audience participation straight away.
Over the next hour, Roisin explores themes of “ Big Disney” fairy tales and the dream of Happily Ever after, a dream that is sold to women from a young age.
She discusses her worst relationships, being single, dating and moving half of way around the world.
Roisin delivers a funny show that is very relatable- even if you’re not Irish. The jokes land well, and she continues with the audience participation throughout the show.
The topics she covers are funny, and the show is well written. Some of the experiences she’s had are ones every woman has gone through at one point, and the audience really gets her. She improvs well, using the audience energy to bounce off, creating effortless laughs.
Roisin is at home on the stage, she is comfortable with her audience, her delivery almost feels like an old friend telling you about their week. Most of the women in the room would love a friend like Roisin, she’s fantastic to laugh with and at.
Standing up in a room of strangers that leaves no room for error takes a lot of courage and confidence, and Roisin seems to have that in spades. She is an absolute natural in front of her audience.
