Melbourne’s most explosive musical export is back. Today, the ARIA Award-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra release their latest record The Ballad Of Monte Loco, a 13-track journey through revolution, rhythm and a wild Spaghetti Western dreamworld.
With the dust still settling from recent singles Walls of Jericho, John Wayne and the electrifying Bom Bom Bom, this brand new full-length album sees the beloved 20-piece orchestra dial everything up — the horns, the drama, the storytelling and the soul.
Opening with the clang of a distant church bell and ending in a whispered moment of reflection, The Ballad Of Monte Loco is anything but a typical ska record. There are heavy dub textures, sweeping brass arrangements, protest lyrics and moments of pure joy. Think Ennio Morricone in a sound clash with Lee Scratch Perry, with a full horn section and a dancefloor at the ready.
“This record takes a wider lens on our musical journey—dipping into cinematic reggae, big-band storytelling, and soulful protest vibes. Expect a melting pot of deep grooves, lush horn lines, and a global soundscape that keeps one foot on the dancefloor and the other in the clouds.” Says the band.
Tracks like No Doubt About It and Read Between The Lines show the band’s love for slow-burning dub and layered grooves, while When Bootsy Came To Town and Spring In My Step bring the funk and uplift that have become signatures of the MSO live show. There’s even a Spanish-language protest track, No Me Mientas, that swings between salsa percussion and driving ska with cinematic intensity.
“We wanted to capture some of the cinematic energy of Sergio Leone classics like The Fistful Trilogy and merge it with some of the wilder, more surreal visions of the West,” shares Bomba. “We love the craziness of films by Alejandro Jodorowsky, so we hoped to bottle a bit of that energy as well. We figured a good tribute to these cinematic ideas would be a trailer to our fictional Western film The Ballad Of Monte Loco. We worked with long-time collaborator and friend Clayton Jacobson—he’s got the eye for mixing real grit with cinematic magic. He’s done some of our most popular music videos and he just gets it.”
Recorded and produced by Nicky Bomba with MSO’s in-house crew, and with sound design by multi-ARIA winner Wally Maloney, The Ballad Of Monte Loco is a sonic leap forward for the group. It’s still unmistakably Melbourne Ska Orchestra, but with a deeper, dustier and more cinematic scope.
To celebrate the release, Melbourne Ska Orchestra are hitting the road for a massive world tour, with shows locked in across Australia, Japan and Canada from July through October. The Australian run kicks off on August 1 at Liberty Hall in Sydney and wraps with a triumphant hometown show at 170 Russell in Melbourne on October 3. Full tour dates below.
“This album was born in a time of uncertainty, but also one of reflection and fire,” says Bomba of the upcoming album. “The Ballad of Monte Loco is our imagined Western world, where rhythm is resistance, and people rise together through music. It touches on revolution, false prophets, joy as rebellion, and the power of truth when it’s sung loud. We wanted it to feel like both a warning and a celebration.”
Since their debut in 2013, Melbourne Ska Orchestra have earned a place as one of Australia’s most original and powerful musical collectives. From ARIA wins to international tours and sold-out hometown runs, their fusion of ska, reggae, funk and big band energy has captured fans around the globe.
And now, with The Ballad Of Monte Loco, the band invites listeners into something bigger than just a record. It’s a fever dream with a beat. A protest party with a saloon soundtrack. A reminder that unity, rhythm and rebellion all belong on the same stage.

Recently making history as the first ever First Nations recipient of the prestigious CMAA Sister Cities Nashville Exchange, Nathan Lamontunveils his vulnerable new single ‘What Comes After’.
The single follows on from ‘Bigger Things’, which clocked over 400,000 streams, reached #42 on the CountryTown Hot 50 airplay chart, hit #44 on the UK iTunes Country Charts, and was added to editorial playlists across Spotify (Fresh Country, Heaps Country) and Apple Music (Aussie Country, Lil Bit Country, All New Country, Today’s Country, New Music Daily, and Country Risers).
‘What Comes After’ is a slick country-pop ballad that packs a powerful emotional punch, showcasing a new side to the singer whose loved-up bops and stunning vocals have already racked up over 1.8 million global streams.
Written alongside longtime friend and former bandmate Rhianna Goldstein, ‘What Comes After’ marks a sonic shift for Nathan, one that doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff.
“This song was born out of real-life experiences, both ours and those around us. For me personally, it’s deeply tied to moments in my relationship with my wife, moments where we stood right on the edge of walking away,” admits Nathan.
“It’s about choosing to fight for love when it would be easier to give up. It’s about pushing past the pride, digging into the memories of how it all began, and holding onto the belief that the story isn’t over yet.”
Nathan brought the track to life with the help of Michael Paynter and Michael De Lorenzis of MSquared Productions, who immediately recognised the heart behind the demo.
“When I arrived at the studio with MSquared, I sent through a handful of rough voice memos the morning of our session. Out of everything, they gravitated straight toward ‘What Comes After’. Together, we refined the structure, made some key lyrical and musical inclusions, and elevated what was already there without losing the raw emotion behind it.”
Testament to Wiradjuri singer’s captivating artistry is his receival of the prestigious CMAA Sister Cities Nashville Exchange. The opportunity will see Nathan connect with international producers, songwriters and industry leaders in Nashville, and continue forging a path that blends strong storytelling with his signature heart-on-sleeve delivery.
With slots at Gympie Music Muster on the horizon and Heartbeat of the Hunter in September, Nathan’s set for a busy back half to 2025. This month he’ll also perform for the first time at the Fiddler’s ‘Boots N Beats’.
With a voice that turns heads and songs that hit home, Nathan Lamont continues to prove he’s one to watch, and with ‘What Comes After’, he reminds us that real strength lies in showing heart.
SHOW DATES:
27th June – The Fiddler – Boots N Beats – Rouse Hill, NSW
31st August – Gympie Music Muster – Gympie, QLD
27th September – Heartbeat of the Hunter – Tocal, NSW

SIENA ROOT announce eagerly-awaited new double live album Made in KuBa & launch pre-orders; first single & video ‘Wishing For More (live)’ out now
The ‘Dynamic Root Rock Experience’remains the most fitting description of SIENA ROOT’s sound – and that’s exactly what the Swedish quartet’s new double live album, Made in KuBa, delivers. Out worldwide on October 3, 2025 via PERCEPTION – A Division of Reigning Phoenix Music, the album is available to pre-order now.
Recorded over three intimate nights in March 2024 at Germany’s legendary Kulturbahnhof (KuBa) in Jena, the release picks up where 2011’s “Root Jam” left off, cranks the tape machines even harder, and continues the band’s commitment to authentic, audiophile sound.
The band’s signature jams are all here: rich in improvisation, dynamic contrasts, and sonic storytelling. To ensure the highest analogue fidelity, long-time sound engineer Ove Noringwas brought in as tape operator to record the shows and track every note, jam and thunderous applause direct to tape – no overdubs, no studio tricks, just pure stage energy.
The first taste of the album, lead single ‘Wishing For More,’ captures the soulful tension and explosive chemistry that SIENA ROOT channel so effortlessly on stage. It’s a track that leaves listeners, fittingly and indeed…wishing for more.
“‘Wishing For More’ was first recorded on the album “Far From The Sun” in 2008, as the rocking opening of the B-side. Through the years of touring we enjoyed to play the song and it developed a character of its own. The song became something more than the shuffle it originally was on the studio recording. We are so pleased to have captured this enchanted groove and energy live on tape.”

The SIENA ROOT quartet – anchored by founding members Sam Riffer (bass) and Love Forsberg (drums & percussion), and rounded out by Zubaida Solid (vocals & keys) and Johan Borgström (guitars) – welcomed guest musicians Erik Peterson on keys and Lisa Isaksson on flute to further enrich the performance on selected songs.

What sets Made in KuBa apart from other live albums is its uncompromising authenticity: a fully live, all-analogue recording with a set list crafted together with fans, featuring twelve tracks from across the band’s catalogue – none of them repeated from “Root Jam.” The result is not just a document of three unforgettable nights in Jena – it’s a fully immersive experience that bridges the space between stage and speaker. And this time, they’ve gone a step further: Made in KuBa was mastered at half-speed, a meticulous process that enhances the sonic depth of the vinyl version.
“Half-speed mastering is an old-school technique that vinyl lovers will recognize,” the band says. “It’s a delicate but complex process that makes “Made in KuBa” an even more three-dimensional listening experience – for you and for us.”
Wishing for more? Get it in full analogue glory: Pre-orders open today for classic black double vinyl (with artistic cut-out cover) and double digipak CD at https://sienaroot.rpm.link/madeinkubaPR
