EMILY ULMAN SHARES EVOCATIVE NEW SINGLE ‘MOUNTAINS MOUNTAINS MOUNTAINS’

A longtime champion of the Australian music industry, and an equally talented artist and storyteller herself, Melbourne’s Emily Ulman today returns with a raw yet charismatic new single Mountains Mountains Mountains, which also serves as a peek into her upcoming full-length album set for release later this year.

 

Channelling the serene confessional qualities of Julia Jacklin with the poetic beauty of Big Thief and the folksy charm of Pinegrove, Mountains Mountains Mountains is a cinematic and tender ode to life’s juxtaposing moments, with Ulman lyrically wearing her heart on her sleeve while also delivering a mesmerising performance rooted in softly blurred indie rock, folk and pop hues. “I love the Japanese proverb: The reverse side has a reverse side”, shares Ulman. “Nothing is ever just one thing. Beneath every surface there is something else waiting to be seen; it reminds us to look deeper, to question first impressions. Mountains Mountains Mountains is about the beauty and the rot, about pleasure and grief, and how even the most pristine places carry traces of what came before. We live in the layers. In what is visible, what is hidden, and the quiet charge in between.”

“This song came out of a moment that felt both intimate and expansive,” Ulman adds. “A parked car. A sweeping view. A private undoing. It’s about renewal, about sexuality, about finding awe in the aftermath. There’s tension in it. Between what’s pristine and what’s overgrown. The beauty lives not in the separation, but in the merging of the two to become something new.”

 

Produced and mixed by Bonnie Knight (Amyl and the Sniffers, Angie McMahon, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers), and mastered by Simon Berckelman (Courtney Barnett, Passenger, Lime Cordiale, Cate Le Bon), Mountains Mountains Mountains expands on Ulman’s most recent single, the softly amiable Every Hillside which unveiled back in March, with the latest track also featuring contributions from Gab Strum (Japanese Wallpaper, Mallrat, Gretta Ray) on piano, bass and synth, Soren Maryasin (Stella Bridie, Chitra) on drums, and Alex Lashlie (Closet Straights, Loose Tooth) on guitar and backing vocals.

 

For over two decades, Emily Ulman has been a driving and defining voice in Australian music, both on stage and behind the scenes. Through her lengthy tenure championing artists, Ulman has curated and programmed lineups at some of Melbourne’s most iconic venues, including The Prince Bandroom, The Gasometer Hotel, and The Toff In Town, and has also programmed some of Australia’s most significant music events, including Brunswick Music Festival, White Night Melbourne, the CHANGES summit, and her own award-winning online festival Isol-Aid, which was awarded Best Festival at the 2021 Music Victoria Awards. Most recently, Ulman served as Executive Program Director for ALWAYS LIVE, a Victorian state-wide celebration of contemporary music that spans emerging artists through to international icons, with everything from sell-out stadiums to intimate venues playing home to these one-off, exclusive and community-focused events.

 

A key force motivating the Australian music scene towards a more progressive, inclusive and artist-first future, Ulman’s musical output is as revered as her work behind the scenes, renowned for her raw and evocative songwriting and infectious melodies that bewitch the soul. Releasing her first new music in over a decade in 2025, Ulman’s latest single, Mountains Mountains Mountains, is a delightful step closer to the long-awaited release of her brand-new album, with the follow-up to her 2015 album WEAR IT WELL set to release later this year.

 

“I think of songwriting as emotional archaeology,” says Ulman, “digging through memory and feeling to see what might still be living underneath. I’m drawn to the quiet intensity of a moment or phrase and the way a single word can unearth something you thought was long buried. I write to excavate. I sing to preserve. I make to stay awake to the mess and the magic of it all.”

 

“Releasing Mountains Mountains Mountains, and music again in general, is both a relief and a revelation,” Ulman concludes. “It feels like returning to a part of myself I almost forgot I missed.”

FLYNN GURRY SHARES ROUSING NEW SINGLE + VIDEO ‘DON’T STOP DREAMING’

An inspired and energetic folk pop bop, today marks the arrival of a brand new single, Don’t Stop Dreaming, from Aussie singer-songwriter Flynn Gurry, also armed with an accompanying new music video. Penned during some post tour blues, Don’t Stop Dreaming also comes ahead of a special East Coast run of shows through June, with Flynn set to visit Melbourne, Warrnambool, Sydney and Brisbane next month for his first ever headline tour.

 

Evoking the sparkling melodies of Vance Joy and the exuberance of Mumford & Sons, Don’t Stop Dreaming lyrically opens with introspection before blossoming into a soaring chorus, with Flynn proclaiming, “Don’t stop dreaming now / Don’t stop dreaming now / Keep that fire burning / Let it all pour out”.

 

Produced by Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, Meg Mac, Dan Sultan) and Edwin White (Vance Joy, Amy Shark, Fergus James), Don’t Stop Dreaming marks Flynn’s first single to be released via his new home at ABC Music, while also ultimately detailing the highs and lows of life on the road – and finding the spark to keep moving forward when the post tour blues inevitably come. “This song was written post-comedown from my first big tour,” shares Flynn. “The last show I had played on that tour is still one of my most memorable shows and I had begun writing the lyrics in the green room whilst the headline band was playing. Feelings of bittersweet. There was a period after that tour where I spent a lot of my time wondering what was next because essentially, I had ticked off a very important bucket list moment – and the chorus came from this place. Ultimately this song is a reminder to myself to not stop dreaming, reminding me to keep pushing and not forget the little person with his guitar just wanting to play the fuck out of it in front of people.”

 

Co-written by Brad Arthur, mixed by Phil Threlfall (Ed Sheeran, Pierce Brothers) and mastered by Andrei Eremin, Don’t Stop Dreaming also brought Flynn creatively together with Michael Peters (Nike, Alfa Romeo) and Patrick Pierce (Cat Empire, Alice Ivy) on the visual side, with the end result organically emerging during the photo shoot for the single’s cover artwork. “The concept for the music video came to Michael and myself as we were shooting the single cover which is me running up a hill,” Flynn explains. “The narrative of the clip became about being playful and remembering our dreaming inner-child. My nephew, who looks very much like me when I was younger, portrays a younger Flynn in the music video. The young self is reminding the present self not to lose that playful energy and curiosity that that got you excited about life in the first place.”

 

Hailing from Warrnambool in Victoria, Flynn Gurry has spent the past few years rapidly making waves in the Australian music industry, most recently signing to Cult Artists for bookings and Woolstore Music, the management company helmed by beloved indie folk duo Pierce Brothers, and also inking a deal with ABC Records. Following a remarkable few years supporting the likes of Ian Moss, King Stingray, Ash Grunwald and Kim Churchill, Flynn also won the triple j Unearthed One Night Stand competition in 2024, which saw him perform alongside G Flip, Ruel, What So Not, Thelma Plum and more at their event in Warrnambool. Shortly after, Flynn became a triple j Unearthed feature artist, going on to support The Dreggs on a national tour, and closed out 2024 performing at Beyond The Valley Festival. And with 2025 now firmly in full swing, Flynn has already ticked off a national tour with Pierce Brothers, was named Port Fairy Folk Festival’s ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’, and has also supported The Dreggs, Kim Churchill, The 502s, and DICE.

 

With word of mouth around his live shows and his ongoing releases turning heads, 2025 will also find Flynn levelling up to tick off his first ever headline tour this June, kicking off on June 6 in Northcote before heading to Warrnambool and Sydney, and concluding proceedings in Brisbane on June 21. “This will be my first ever tour, so I’m really excited to be playing headline shows in major cities that I’ve not headlined in before,” enthuses Flynn. “I’ve been touring quite a lot the last 18 months opening up for some of the best live acts in the country and feel like I’ve been able to learn so much about connecting with your audience and putting on a great show. Audiences can expect lots of songs, stories and 12 string guitar.”

 

And before Flynn’s headline run next month, the world has plenty of time to fall head over heels for Don’t Stop Dreaming; an inspiring and relatable cut that also showcases Flynn at his most realised form to date.

 

“This feels like such a MOMENT in my career,” says Flynn. “I am really excited for everyone to hear this track because I feel it is my strongest work to date, and I also had the best time making it with such incredible people. The writing of DSD also happened for me at such an important time as it was right after I had finished my first big tour and while I was experiencing the post tour blues wondering what was next this song kind of fell into my lap and has become the inspiration to just keep going and keep dreaming.  “

 

“At the heart I love telling stories, I also love trying to bring lots of energy into a space even if it’s just me and my acoustic guitar.”

Sam Fender Announces 2025 Australian Tour With Holly Humberstone

Sam Fender has announced his return to Australia as part of his world tour supporting his third studio album, People Watching. The multi-platinum Novacastrian singer-songwriter will tour nationally with his band, as well as fellow English indie artist Holly Humberstone as main support for all shows.

Fender was last in Australia circa 2023, where he performed at the final Splendour In The Grass to date alongside the likes of Lizzo, Flume and Mumford & Sons. In addition to performing at the festival, Fender and his band also performed a one-off show at Perth’s HBF Stadium. Humberstone, meanwhile, is returning following her run of shows over the 2023/24 new-year period – which included performances at both the Heaps Good and Lost Paradise festivals.

People Watching was released in February 2025 and debuted at the top of the UK album charts – completing a trifecta of albums to do so alongside his 2019 debut Hypersonic Missiles and its follow-up, 2021’s Seventeen Going Under. Its release was preceded by the release of its title track, which peaked at number four on the UK singles chart and has since been certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). A follow-up EP, Me And The Dog, was released last month.

News: Dayazell (folk/France) returns with the video for “Hov Arek Sarer”, ahead of Hypnos

After lighting up the stages of L’Olympia and La Cigale as the opening act for Wardruna, Watts Next? is thrilled to announce the grand return of Dayazell with the music video for “Hov Arek Sarer Jan“, out on May 9. This traditional Armenian piece also heralds the release of Hypnos, their third album, due June 6.

From the start, Dayazell has brought ancient world repertoires to life, breathing their own essence into them—both ethereal and grounded. With “Hov Arek Sarer Jan”, the Toulouse-based quartet revisits a song collected in the 19th century by priest and ethnomusicologist Komitas, a key figure in Armenian cultural heritage. This track, a true prayer to the elements, carries sorrow away and invokes beauty through pain. The video, shot in the medieval chapel of Massals (Tarn), enhances this spiritual depth. The location embodies Dayazell’s beloved balance between sacred solemnity and pagan simplicity, letting light and architecture converse with music.

The upcoming album Hypnos, set for June 6, takes us from Spain to Armenia, via Greece and Turkey. This borderless dreamlike journey spans eight compositions blending folk and world music into soaring, liberated soundscapes. Dayazell weaves oud, nyckelharpa, ney, drums, and voice into a constant enchantment—a gentle, embodied trance. Recorded at Les Sphères Sonores in Liège, the album boasts an organic, rich, and warm sound.

An Interactive decent into Altered Perception.

As part of the Sleepless Footsgray Festival, the multi sensory experience The Door In Question opened to the public this week.

Inviting viewers into a world of interactive exploration and vivid sensory experiences, The Door In Question is a unique experience, not quite like anything ever created before.

Beginning at The Cube, viewers are taken on a journey through a landscape of memories, mental health illness and a sea of discarded possessions.

As a voice guides you into Hosier Lane, a Virtual reality scene unfolding in front of you, the space opens out to capture various childhood experiences. At times it feels sad, reflective and a little disorienting.

As you move through onto the other spaces, it’s like walking through a time capsule of memories. It’s unsettling at times,  it is a visceral experience, where smells, sounds and objects intertwine with you, to create a feeling of anxiety. It’s a whole body reaction to what is happening and you’re not just an observer, you’re a participant in the process.

THE DOOR IN QUESTION is the brainchild of producer Troy Rainbow, who created the show based on his real-life experiences living with mental illness, exploring the chaotic yet mysterious inner workings of schizophrenia.

As you progress through the experience, it’s hard not to empathise with Troy, as you feel how chaotic his childhood must have been. Time loses all meaning, and even though you’re seeing it through his eyes, you’re not just a casual observer- you see mental illness through the eyes of his mother as well. It’s compelling and captivating.

For anyone who grew up with a parent or family member with mental illness, the experience is somewhat familiar. The chaos and anxiety that one feels when walking through the rooms is similar for those that have experienced these feelings firsthand. For anyone else, it’s an insight into the chaos and challenges a child faces when a parent is unable to be a caregiver.

It is a poignantly beautiful yet sad love letter, a catharsis and a rationalisation of the reality of how a child experiences the world via a parent with psychosis. It’s brilliance lies within how it completely immerses you into Troy’s troubled childhood and the troubled mind of his mother. One can only imagine how hard it must have been to revisit old memories and uncover the scars once thought to be healed when creating this work.

To remove the stigma that surrounds mental illness is to take a brave leap into the unknown and Troy does so with compassion. There is no anger or hatred in the experience, just a rationale of what it must feel like to be inside the mind of someone who without support was unable to be a caregiver and mother. There is a sense of grief for the person who lived through this.

It makes you feel uneasy, uncomfortable and anxious all at once, but also inviting curiosity to explore. Each room is different to the last, some are more chaotic than others.

Troy Rainbow has created an art piece that is truly inspiring and unique, it is haunting, thought provoking and sadly beautiful. It inspires conversation and creativity. The craftsmanship of each room is amazing, from the VR to each different room, the amount of thought and detail that has gone into creating a fully visceral atmosphere is extraordinary. The smells of fresh paint, vanilla, sulphate and smoke make the entire journey feel so much more disorienting. It’s exceptionally easy to completely lose track of all reality as you traverse through each room.

The Door in Question will leave a lasting impression on anyone who experiences the artwork and hopefully allow viewers to take away from it their own thoughts and feelings on how it affects them. Whether it be feelings of anxiety or familiarity or just a sense of understanding The Door in Question is an experience that will stay with you long after you enter back into reality.

THE DOOR IN QUESTION will play at various locations throughout Footscray from 8 to 18 May, as part of after-dark music and arts festival, SLEEPLESS FESTIVAL. The festival is set to take over Melbourne’s inner west this May with a vibrant showcase of music, performance, art and installation.

Warm up act, Simple Plan (Canada) opened with an emotional performance that resonated with the punters who were singing along to every song. 

The Offspring followed with a high-octane celebration of punk rock, marking a triumphant return to Melbourne as part of their SUPERCHARGED Worldwide in ’25 tour. Lead singer Dexter Holland’s charismatic stage presence was complemented by the band’s tight musicianship, creating an electrifying atmosphere throughout the night. 

They delivered an eclectic setlist that spanned their massive catalogue, including fan favorites “Come Out and Play,” “Light It Up,” and “The Kids Aren’t Alright.” Rounding  out the night belting out an encore of “Self Esteem.” 

The audience’s enthusiasm was solid , the fans were singing along to every word. The band’s interaction with the crowd made the night even better.  They were grateful for the sold out crowd and loved being in Australia.

The fireworks, streamers, confetti explosions and massive skeletons on stage really made the night a spectacle.  For those who missed this unforgettable night, the tour continues with upcoming shows in Sydney and  Brisbane.

Live Review: Gracie Abrams at Rod Laver Arena

Singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams kicks off the first of three sold-out shows of her highly anticipated ‘The Secret of Us Tour’ at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

The atmosphere in the arena is electric as the audience catches a glimpse of Gracie Abrams who appears behind the lighting rig at the top of the stage as she starts off with ‘Felt Good About You.’ She moves to the front of the stage with guitar in hand for more tracks off her latest album including ‘Risk’ and ‘Blowing Smoke’ as she shows off her floor-length navy-blue crushed velvet backless dress.

“I’ve missed you so much. We’ve talked about it for the entire year that we’ve been apart. Were any of you at our last show?” She asks the audience of familiar faces. “Thank you for being here. This means everything to me,” Abrams exclaims.

Before anything else happens tonight, I just want to say thank you so much for adopting this album into your lives, specifically Australia has been so generous towards this album, and it has blown my mind in every single way possible. So, to be here, it means a lot more than you’ll ever know,” she says with heartfelt gratitude.

Abrams asks the crowd to join her in a big duet and be loud about our feelings as she continues with ‘Gave You I Gave You I’ on the piano and soon the whole area lights up with phone torches for the emotionally charged song that’s matched with her powerful vocals.

“I hope that tonight you feel all of the light, love and joy that you’ve given me. I hope you feel it all back, because it’s changed my life and I just love you more than anything,” she tells her fans before dedicating ‘Camden’ to us.

“This song felt really sad when I wrote it, and then less sad when you guys took it and made it yours because I felt less alone very immediately. You have that effect on me every single time. So, thank you for that. This is for all of you,” she reveals.

Midway through the show, the lights dim, and Abrams appears in the middle of the arena beside a keyboard next to a bed. “Welcome to my bedroom! This is my dream that you’re all finally in my room,” she says excitedly. She explains that the B-stage is a replica of the room that she grew up in and the room that she wrote all of her songs as a kid in.

“This is where we got to know each other because before I ever put music out for real, I would post songs that I literally had just written on Instagram and SoundCloud. It was really a miracle. You were the miracle because you somehow found my songs and cared about them. And it totally changed my life in every regard, but really in the way that like to feel a community of people is the most powerful thing.” Before Abrams sings, she takes a few pictures of her fans in the audience to capture the moments to remember us by.

The intimate setting of her on-stage bedroom allows fans to feel a deeper connection to her music and personal journey as she shares a selection of some stripped-back tracks including ‘Right Now’, ‘I Knew It, I Know You’, and ‘I Miss You, I’m Sorry.’

Abrams reflects on her growth and connection with audience over the past five years. “So much has happened for all of us between then and now. Reading all of stories about your relationships and your feelings and your experiences in the comments on my posts is very inspiring. I feel like since then, we’ve been growing up together and whether you’ve been around since then, or you found out about this music yesterday. I feel really privileged to be growing up at the same time as all of you,” she shares.

Abrams makes her way back to the main stage for her Taylor Swift collaboration ‘us.’ that’s met with a huge audience reaction and mass-singalong. The crowd chants her name in demand of an encore which she returns for to sing two of her most popular upbeat tracks, ‘That’s So True’ and ‘Close to You’ which has the entire crowd singing along to every single word of the song at the top their lungs and making circle dance formations on the floor area to culminate the big finish.

Live Review: Myles Smith

Myles Smith performs his first-ever Australian concert at the Forum in Melbourne to a sold-out crowd after being rescheduled six-months ago.

“We are finally fucking here! We’ve been on tour now for the best part of 18-months and every night we have one job, and that’s to put on the best show that we can. The only job that you guys have tonight, and hopefully after all this time, you guys just enjoy as much as possible,” he says.

Following an energetic start, Smith opens up and bares his soul to connect deeply with the audience. He shares personal stories of struggles with mental health and family issues that stir up a range of mixed of emotions as he takes us on a journey through themes of love, loss, and personal growth.

“Sometimes I hear things that impact me, and I don’t know how to articulate it, I turn it into music and from music into songs,” he shares. He continues with an emotional song called ‘Whisper’ that’s met with a big audience singalong.

Smith’s vocal delivery is exceptional and the chemistry with his band is truly something special. Together they captivate the crowd with their joyful acoustic-driven indie music with high-energy moments.

“The songs that I write in my bedroom or at home alone – they come from a real place, real parts of my story. The fact that I’ve been able to put them out into the world, and that you guys have looked after them in the way that you have, I just want to say a genuine and sincere thank you for changing my life,” he says humbly. He opens up about his absent father in a song called ‘3am’.

Smith’s bandmate performs an incredible piano solo before the backdrop illuminates with twinkle lights like stars in the night sky to match the Forum’s ceiling. Together they all continue with ‘River’ which encourages anthemic chants from the crowd.

Smith reveals he’s been working on new music and promises us that six new tracks will be ours with an upcoming EP he’s releasing by the end of this month. He shares a few new tracks including an upbeat danceable track that gets us all moving.

For a very emotional moment during ‘Little by Little’, Smith asks everyone to take their mobile phones out of their pockets, but to leave their flashlights off. He wants to see us stick them right up in the air and turn on our flashlights to show unity against anxiety and depression. “I’m going to ask you to show every single person the light on your phone in a few seconds, and I want you to wave proudly and make sure that everyone can see you. You have a family right here in this room, and no one can take that away from you,” he declares.

He ends with an encore of his most popular tracks including ‘My Home’ and ‘Stargazing.’ He decides to perform the latter twice – the second time he dives into the crowd and sings up close with fans as they share a special moment as they jump around together for the euphoric anthem.

Metal outfit Melting, self-described as sonic aggression made in Melbourne, today share their debut EP ‘You Exist Because We Allow It’ via Greyscale Records. They launch with a new video for Oblivion, stream it here.

After generating some buzz with three debut singles last year, Melting quickly attracted the attention of Greyscale, who are now proud to represent the four-piece. The group made an impression with new singles 874 and Into The Suffer, setting the tone for their upcoming debut EP. They’ve already shared a handful of new tunes on stages supporting alternative heavyweights in Thornhill and Justice For The Damned, and will join regional Australian runs supporting Alpha Wolf in May and Thy Art Is Murder in July. ‘You Exist Because We Allow It’ is the groups first record together and first as a freshly signed band, and they’ve put their best foot forward on their defining new collection. “The title says it all”, says the band. “This record is relentless, both sonically and in its themes—absolute control, or the lack thereof. Refusing to be pigeon holed was the catalyst for the direction of this EP.”
