After 11 years Bon Iver returned to Melbourne to a packed out Sidney Myer Music Bowl on a very still and warm night on the 4th of March 2023. Fans were waiting in anticipation as Bon Iver took to stage as a full 6 piece band including two drum sets, guitar, bass, sax, synth, keys, adopting the crowd as their very own choir.
Playing a comprehensive set list for the evenings event opening with Perth, gliding easily into Towers, followed closely by Heavenly Father , the show is an immersive experience that transcends any other show and front man Justin Vernon demonstrates his expertise and command of the guitar, making it appear to be an extension of his own arm.
There was not much banter in-between songs, leaving the crowd mesmerised throughout the whole set. The full band immersed everyone in a pool of sound for the first half of the set, while the second half of the set was stolen by front man Justin as he took centre stage and played ‘715 – CREEKS’ and ‘re:Stacks’ solo. The wind picked up right on cue for the crescendo of the show where ‘Skinny Love’ was played and chanted along to leaving the band with a standing ovation.
Even after over a decade it’s clear Bon Iver has a place offering a warm welcome and ready to hear the many experimental sounds they have to perform. From the response from the crowd it would appear that their absence has been felt and Melbourne fans are happy to welcome them back soon.
