Today, Ghanaian-Australian auteur Genesis Owusu returns with “LIFE KEEPS GOING”, the latest single from his upcoming album REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE, out Friday 15 May via OURNESS. The track arrives ahead of the Australian leg of ‘RED STAR WU’S PIRATE RADIO’ tour this May, with his ferocious live show set to break floors across Newcastle, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth – snap up your tickets now.
“LIFE KEEPS GOING” is a club cut propelled by a gritty DnB throughline, punctuating the track with force and movement. Across formidable verses, Owusu muses on time and the motions of life, choosing to find strength and inspiration in their relentless, disobedient nature. The accompanying music video was filmed in Ghana’s expansive Black Star Square – built for independence, steeped in national unity – the perfect stage for a song that carries exactly that weight.
Owusu says: “The world hasn’t ended yet. We’re still moving, we’re still jumping, we’re still living, and so we shall continue. Through rain, shine, exploitation and warfare. We, the people, will always stubbornly persist, and hopefully persist hand in hand.”
REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE marks Owusu’s third studio album, seeing one of Australia’s most celebrated and visionary contemporary artists construct an exposed state-of-the-day record. Experimental yet cohesive, desolate yet ecstatic, unflinching yet free – duality punctuates the album as he layers musings on an unsettled world with piercing reflections of his, and our own places within it. Rich in lyricism and earnest in its message, the resolute body of work confronts a divisive era that is ripping at the seams of humanity and heeds the need for unity. Pulling from Deep Funk, Neo Soul, Brit Rock and Alt Pop, the record fuses its influences into something that feels both sprawling and deliberate.
Owusu recently appeared in the final season of Netflix’s Heartbreak High, performing “STAMPEDE” at a secret show, a moment that sent the track to #21 on Australia’s Shazam Top 200 Daily chart with over 42,000 Shazams. It adds to the mounting anticipation for his forthcoming record, with globally acclaimed singles also including “PIRATE RADIO” and “DEATH CULT ZOMBIE”. Together the tracks have frequented triple j’s Most Played list, premiered on The Zane Lowe Show and BBC 6Music, and attracted strong international radio love from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6Music, KCRW, KEXP, SiriusXMU and more. They also received esteemed shout outs from Denzel Curry, Sian Eleri from Radio 1’s Future Artists and Anthony Fantano (The Needle Drop).
Owusu’s resolute 2021 debut, Smiling With No Teeth, was a cultural reset, a fearless exploration of identity, that earned widespread critical acclaim, followed by his 2023 bold concept record STRUGGLER, which debuted at #4 on the ARIA Album Chart and received praise from Paste, NPR, Billboard and AlternativePress. Over the two albums, he secured a combined 7ARIA Awards, including two Album of the Year titles, while standalone singles “Good Times” and “WUTD”each earned gold plaques in Australia. His live reputation echoes his recorded output, having performed alongside Tame Impala, Paramore and IDLES, graced the iconic stages of Lollapalooza, Primavera Sound, Splendour in the Grass and Austin City Limits, plus saw him deliver a landmark sold-out performance at Sydney Opera House with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Only got one life, better risk it. “LIFE KEEPS GOING” is out now, don’t miss it live in a city near you this May!
