Where most debut EPs play it safe, Canvassprawls deliberately – an introduction to Shewita as a solo artist. The singer-songwriter moves fluidly across the six tracks, held together not by a singular sound but by the strength of her voice. Rich, stacked vocal arrangements run through every track, sitting against a production that shifts from warm and funk-inflected to cool and club-ready without ever losing its footing, with a gleaming, metallic aesthetic that ties the project together visually and sonically, developed with photographer Micaela Chutrau (The Garage Photo Studio, Gadigal/Sydney).
“Canvas is my homage to the genres that are shaping me as an artist – R&B, pop, funk, soul, dance & club. It’s more eclectic than I had originally planned, and for that reason, it feels like a true reflection of how much I want to keep exploring the vastness of music,”Shewita shares.
The EP was produced by Akey Amy, with additional contributions from Stephen Lane (bass), Jordan Pereira (drums) and Ashley Ballat (trumpet), and mixed and mastered by Becki Whitton, Nick Herrera, Nicholas Di Lorenzo (Panorama Mastering) and Bailey Judd.
Having already graced the stages of major Australian productions including Hamilton, Wicked and MJ The Musical, Shewita now steps into her own spotlight with a sound shaped by the likes of Kelela, Lianne La Havas, Masego, Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder. Since launching her solo project in late 2025 with debut single “Too Soon” via Music in Exile, she has gone on to deliver captivating live performances at Parramatta Lanes, Spring Fling and the National Multicultural Festival in Ngunnawal/Canberra.
