Live Review: Sombr at Festival Hall, Melbourne

Live Review: Sombr at Festival Hall, Melbourne

Thurs 4 Dec 2025

Newcastle punk act dust open with their experimental soundscape of jagged instrumentation, atmospheric guitars and glitchy electronics full of frenetic energy.

The band plays with an undercurrent of restraint, every moment stretched out and the arrangements sometimes sparse, yet explosive and confrontational.

US alternative-pop artist sombr (aka Shane Boose) makes his Australian headline debut live show tonight and when he emerges in low blue light, the room erupts to a warm greeting from the crowd. Opening with ‘i wish i knew how to quit you,’ he immediately captures the audience’s attention with his animated and energetic moves as he swings his microphone around with swagger.

sombr’s lo-fi vocal style is intimate and raw, carrying a breathy, vulnerable quality, blending indie-pop and alternative influences with subtle imperfections that make the delivery feel authentic and emotionally charged. His use of layered harmonies and soft reverb evoke nostalgia and intimacy, making his vocals feel both modern and timeless.

The stage is styled like a late-night talk show, featuring a New York City skyline backdrop, warm lighting, a dressing mirror and a desk with plush chairs to create a cozy ‘70s inspired TV-set vibe.

sombr brings to life his indie-rock hits from the make-shift recording studio in his bedroom to the live stage with a mesmerising and electrifying energy. ‘savior’ and ‘we never dated’ have the crowd shouting lines back with the kind of unfiltered honesty usually reserved for late-night phone calls.

‘perfume’ shifts the mood into something more spacious, its warm groove filling Festival Hall as fans sway in sync. ‘do i ever cross your mind’ and ‘come closer’ lands with deep clarity, showcasing how effortlessly he blends delicate vocal runs with textured production.

He shows deep gratitude to his fans who have sold out his first show in Australia, far across the other side of the world where he calls home. “All I ask is to get lost in the music, take care of everyone around you and have the time of your fucking life!” he shouts.

The middle stretch of the set brings out some of the night’s strongest vocal moments. sombr moves from feather-light falsetto to deeper, more anchored tones, each transition feeling intentional. Sad girl anthem ‘caroline’ is a pivotal moment.

“When I was 16 I was going to high school every day and I really hated it, so I made this song. I made a video with it, and I posted it online and I went to sleep expecting to wake up and go to school the next day and get made fun of. But it was viral overnight, and every record label was in my inbox. I got signed, I got flown out to LA. Now I still get made fun, but at least now I’m doing what I love,” he recounts.

“If you ever want to do anything in this world do whatever you take your mind to because I used to go to shows and be in that pit, look up on the stage you want to be. where I am right now. So, you can do that exact thing. If you want to do that,” he continues.

When the band eases into ‘would’ve been you’ and ‘undressed,’ the atmosphere shifts again, quieter, heavier. sombr delivers each line as if exhaling heartbreak itself, making the room feel intimate.

‘canal street’ and ‘crushing’ snaps the audience back into full-body motion. Guitars sharpen, drums thicken, and sombr leans into a more urgent, percussive energy. The room pulses, everyone moving as one mass, the chorus of ‘crushing’ erupts like a release valve.

As the set nears its end, ‘under the mat’ and ‘back to friends’ offers a dual emotional arc that’s reflective and triumphant. sombr stands centre-stage, silhouetted in white light, delivering the kind of cathartic, full-voiced performance that solidifies why fans connect so fiercely to his work.

The night closes with ‘12 to 12,’ a perfectly chosen finale. The disco ball illuminates the venue for the huge club anthem. He throws around his custom microphone stand that swings freely like a pendulum, adding a dramatic and kinetic element to his live performance.

“If you ever feel alone in this world, just know you’re not alone, because I am here for you. Thank you for being here for me. I plan on coming back here for the rest of my life. I hope guys will come back here to visit me every year, too. I love you so much,” he proclaims.

sombr delivered a night of slow-burn intensity and emotional precision. As such a young artist, his impressive and magnetic stage presence is both polished and unpredictable—marking him as a rising star and one to watch in the indie-pop scene.

BRAZEN BARBIE SHARES SULTRY EMPOWERMENT VIA NEW SINGLE ‘EN ROUTE’ TAKEN FROM NEW MIXTAPE ‘TOO BRAZEN’ OUT TODAY

Take a walk on the sultry side with Kenyan-Australian artist Brazen Barbie today dropping a brand new single En Route; a slick and sharp outing that dives headfirst into self-reflection and empowerment, while also offering another glimpse into Brazen Barbie’s brand new mixtape TOO BRAZEN out today.

With swaggering sheen and humid sonic surrounds, En Route opens with Brazen Barbie’s effortless flow, declaring “my words deep cut, they barbaric / Nightmare on Elm Street, vocabulary graphic”, setting the scene for sharp lyrical depth piercing through throwback nods, soulful hip hop and R&B flavours, and lashings of strutting attitude that will make you want to take on the world. En Route came out of a messy headspace while I was navigating loss, betrayal from closest friends and relationships and burning out,” explains Brazen Barbie. “It’s about choosing to keep focus and choosing yourself while life may be messy at times. Instead of meditating through chaos, powering through it.  It’s also a quiet reminder of strength and to keep moving forward.”

Releasing her debut mixtape BRAZEN earlier this year, Brazen Barbie’s hotly-anticipated collision of grit, glam and conviction collided seamlessly, drawing attention from the likes of Rolling Stone Australia, with Brazen Barbie also nabbing triple j Unearthed’s feature artist in July. Now a bona fide fixture in the ever-growing emerging Australian R&B and hip hop scene, Brazen Barbie will close out 2025 with an unforgettable bang via the forthcoming release of her sophomore mixtape, TOO BRAZEN; a collection that glows to even greater new heights, as Brazen Barbie herself elaborates: “same essence but with way more reflective writing and growth.”

Pulsing with lyrical content that spans self-discovery, reflection, relationship breakdowns, healing, growth, confidence and feminine strength, TOO BRAZEN dazzles with Brazen Barbie’s trademark confidence coated with authenticity and potent sonic flair; an inescapable fact on full display from the opening bars of Pack It Up, all glimmering menace and a call to action to for taking your power back. From here, TOO BRAZEN journeys between sauntering sonics and a message of powering through chaos (En Route), a flirtatious yet grounded ode to self-discovery (Why Don’t Ya), gritty bounce balanced with gratitude, ambition and manifestation (Blessings), a sinewy dive through finding fuel in the chaos (Payback), and, via closing track and previous single Heavy Rings, an slinky outing that concludes proceedings on a beautifully fanged note, as Brazen Barbie explains, “This one is about walking in a room like you own it and power dynamics. There is a hint of relationship/revenge tension in the song, less heartbreak, and more the final realisation that somebody wasn’t on your level. Holding your own with or without them, knowing your worth and knowing you’re not the one missing out on anything.”

Kenyan-Australian, Perth-via-Melbourne creative powerhouse Brazen Barbie brandishes her formidable talent and drive alongside powerful authenticity, her dominating voice and iced out bold lyricism. Relentlessly growing her back catalogue, delivering hit after hit throughout her career to date, Brazen Barbie pens rawness straight from the heart, with a prowess capable of complete world domination. Sparking her music journey in primary school, with her early interests centred around cello and singing, Brazen Barbie’s musical passion expanded in her teens, ultimately manifesting into her following the footsteps of luminaries such as Gangsta Boo and crunk pioneer Duke Deuce, but with her own indelible sonic flavour that continues to set her apart from the rest.

From earlier hits like CHECK and DON’T TALK through to her debut mixtape, 2025’s BRAZEN, Brazen Barbie’s rightfully braggadocious bars dovetail confidence, independent and femininity, softening her piercing lyricism at times with playful punchlines in magnetic displays of profundity and creative dexterity. Previously performing at Sydney Fringe Festival, BIGSOUND, SXSW and Promiseland, ticking off appearances on prominent editorial playlists like Spotify’s The Drip, The Flavour, Local Hype and A1, not to mention taking out the cover of Spotify’s Hot Girl Sh*t, Fresh Finds AU & NZ and Local Hype, and notable features on Apple Music’s Rap Life, VICE and triple j, Brazen Barbie was also inducted into the Acclaim Magazine’s All Stars Class of 2024. But despite her storied success to date, it genuinely feels like we are only scratching the surface of Brazen Barbie’s transcendent rise as she continues to blaze her own path in the oversaturated, male-dominated world of hip-hop, rap and R&B.

Resilient, made of brass, and unashamedly (and fittingly) brazen, Brazen Barbie’s brand new chapter ascends today, via her new single En Route, and mixtape TOO BRAZEN; and it’s right in time for some perfectly soundtracked summer heat, as Brazen Barbie concludes, There’s a definite club/summer influence running through the production of some of the tracks on this mixtape as we’re going into summer/club season, plenty of up-tempo beats, and carefree/confident delivery.”

Brazen Summer has commenced!  And with a European tour locked in for April 2026, she’s gearing up to take this next era global.

En Route and TOO BRAZEN both out today.

A DAY TO REMEMBER & PAPA ROACH
BIG ROCK TOUR
WITH SPECIAL GUESTS
LANDMVRKS

Australia and New Zealand, big things are coming! In 2026, two heavyweights will head down under for a colossal arena run, with Florida hybrid heavies A DAY TO REMEMBER and California mainstays PAPA ROACH joining forces for the BIG ROCK TOUR next April, joined by special guests LANDMVRKS.

Set to commence on Saturday 4 April in Perth, A DAY TO REMEMBER and PAPA ROACH will journey the BIG ROCK TOUR through Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane arenas, before closing out in Auckland on Wednesday 15 April.

Since forming in the early 2000s, A DAY TO REMEMBERhave formidably shaped and expanded the musical landscape, with their signature blend of potent pop punk and heaving metalcore catapulting them from the underground into international headliner status; and an enduring, ever-growing global fanbase rapidly rising to match.

Pioneers of pop-mosh and one of the true linchpins in the alternative scene, A DAY TO REMEMBER‘s commercial acclaim and chameleonic creativity has defied expectations and preconceived notions of what it means to be a rock band in the 21st century, with each of the ADTR’s eight full-length albums rocketing to #1 on the Billboard Rock, Indie and/or Alternative Charts upon release, along with one platinum album, two gold albums, one platinum single, and four gold singles. With nearly 2 billion worldwide streams in their wake, and sales over three million units, A DAY TO REMEMBER‘s sweltering commercial triumphs are equally matched by their indelible live performances, capable of stupefying packed arenas around the world with unforgettable cuts including The Downfall Of Us AllAll I Want and All My Friends.

Having shared stages over the years with Yellowcard, Falling In Reverse, New Found Glory and Parkway Drive amongst countless others, A DAY TO REMEMBER have spent 2025 extensively on the road, including headlining in the UK, Europe and North America, and performing at Knotfest Australia, Slam Dunk Festival, Rock am Ring, Hellfest, and Vans Warped Tour. Kicking off the new year performing with Avenged Sevenfold and Mr. Bungle in South America, 2026 is undeniably set to once again affirm the band’s stalwart live reputation that had Melodic Mag declare: “their ability to connect with their audience, combined with their musical versatility and high-energy showmanship, cements their status as one of the most dynamic and exciting live bands today.”

Two-time GRAMMY-nominated and Platinum-selling rockers PAPA ROACH have perfected evolution and raw power over the course of 30 years. Hailing from Vacaville, California and forming back in the early 90s, PAPA ROACH embody resilience in every sense of the word.

Releasing their debut album, Old Friends from Young Years, in 1997, the band have since gone on to release 11 studio albums, including their most recent outing Ego Trip, unveiled in 2022 via their own label New Noize Records. A band equally fluent in weaving fresh takes on the alternative and hard rock realms time and time again, PAPA ROACH have also spent their storied career calling attention to mental health; a driving theme that stems back to day one and the release of their genre-defining 2000 debut single Last Resort. A breakout hit taken from their 2000 album InfestLast Resort would also go on to pave the way for 26 career Top-10 hits, 12 career #1s and an ongoing global impact that most could only dream of.

Teaming up with The Used in 2023 for a double-header Australian run, PAPA ROACH balanced fan-favourites with plenty of surprises for their Aussie fans, with Scenestr capturing PAPA ROACH‘s Brisbane magnetic performance that year: “there’s a stack of interaction between the band the crowd tonight and we are relishing in the nostalgia and lapping up later tracks like staved hyenas, whooping all the while”. And if the walls could talk at any of the countless venues PAPA ROACH have played throughout their careers across the globe, both as the main event and alongside Red Hot Chili Peppers, Limp Bizkit, Eminem and more, the resounding sentiment would be that PAPA ROACH aren’t just revered for their longevity; this is a band who can adapt, survive and thrive, brandishing an underdog spirit with prime-time appeal. And they’ll be bringing it with spades alongside A DAY TO REMEMBER next April.

French modern metalcore heavyweights LANDMVRKS have become one of the most in-demand names in the scene, forming in 2014 and going on to push the very fabric of their genre via their signature blend of blistering heaviness, infectious melodies and emotionally-charged lyrics. Over the course of four studio albums, including their latest 2025 full-length The Darkest Place I’ve Ever BeenLANDMVRKS continue to raise their own benchmark to ferocious heights. Ticking off a successful world tour in 2024, the group have solidified their standing as a global powerhouse, and their electrifying shows leave audiences breathless, as does their stacked back-catalogue that spans the likes of SulfurSuffocate, Scars and many more. Marking their first national Australian headline tour earlier this year, 2026 will find LANDMVRKS once again wowing Aussie crowds with their trademark brutality.

Prepare to scream your lungs out ’til your head starts spinnin’ and dance with the demons on a high wire because all signs point down under next year. Secure your tickets now!

Live Review: Franz Ferdinand

Franz Ferdinand
Live At The Gardens, Melbourne
November 28

Franz Ferdinand electrify Melbourne with a career‑spanning set at the Royal Botanic Gardens, proving once again why they remain one of the most vital live acts of their generation.

Franz Ferdinand were last seen last playing in Melbourne in 2018, and the anticipation was unmistakable as the band took the stage under the stars at the Gardens. Local openers Teenage Dads and Delivery warmed the crowd with spirited sets, setting the tone for an evening of sharp riffs and infectious energy.

The band launched into ‘The Dark of the Matinée,’ immediately commanding attention with Alex Kapranos’ swagger and precision. ‘Night Or Day’ and ‘Walk Away’ followed, their driving rhythms pulling the audience deeper into the performance. By the time ‘Build It Up’ and ‘No You Girls’ arrived, the Gardens were alive with movement, every note delivered with relentless force.

‘Evil Eye’ brought darker textures before the unmistakable opening of ‘Do You Want To’ sent the crowd into a frenzy. Voices rose together chanting “Lucky, lucky, you’re so lucky,” as Kapranos settled into the moment , asking “tell me, how am I feeling?” before confessing, “Melbourne you’re sounding so fine tonight!” It was a communal eruption, the kind of connection that defines Franz Ferdinand’s live shows.

The set surged forward with ’40’,’ ‘Right Action,’ and ‘Black Eyelashes,’ before the playful chaos of ‘Michael’ reignited the Gardens. ‘Love Illumination’ became a highlight, Kapranos proclaiming, “I want to see those hands in the air, I want to see those beautiful hands come together,” as the crowd responded in kind, turning the Gardens into a sea of raised arms.

The energy reached its peak with ‘Take Me Out’, the anthem that remains their most explosive live moment. Kapranos then leaned into Melbourne’s energy, declaring, “I love that Melbourne energy. Would you like to take that energy higher?” before launching into ‘Hooked’, a perfect segue into the closing run of ‘Outsiders.’

As the band prepared for the encore, Kapranos teased the crowd: “Who said one more song? I’m afraid I have really bad news for you, because I have the names of four more songs for you.” The Gardens erupted as ‘Audacious’, ‘Darts of Pleasure,’ and ‘Evil and a Heathen’ carried the night toward its finale. ‘This Fire’ closed the show in a blaze of sound and light, leaving the audience breathless and exhilarated.

The lighting design was sublime, casting the Gardens in shifting hues that mirrored the band’s dynamic sound. It wasn’t just a concert—it was an immersive experience, where sound and vision fused to transport the audience into Franz Ferdinand’s world.

Franz Ferdinand’s Melbourne return was more than a performance; it was a celebration. A reminder of the enduring power of rock and roll to unite, uplift, and ignite.
