Live Review: David Gray

David Gray

Palais Theatre, St. Kilda

Sunday Nov 09

The auditorium is on it’s feet and giving a standing ovation even before David Gray plays his first note. In Australia for his Past & Present World Tour, the iconic UK artist is here to treat Australian audiences with an array of classics and new music.

The sold out Palais Theatre is the perfect setting for the talented Gray to showcase his powerful voice, the acoustics are absolutely sublime, the high ceilings filled with sound. Running through the set list, he plays a variety of crowd pleasing songs, playing White Ladder early on in the set.

Gray has a talent that is unmatched, he creates songs and art that has depth and mystery. He begs the question- is this someone who feels deeply, and lets us into his world. He performs each song with passion and a voice that gives listeners goosebumps.

This Years Love has the entire theater holding their breaths in awe, he delivers it with such a heartfelt performance that the crowd are silent. It’s an achingly beautiful song that speaks to everyone who has ever been tired of getting their heart broken time and time again.

Right before launching into Babylon, he gets playful with a cover of Depache Mode’s  Just Can’t Get Enough, dancing to the 80s classic. It’s a nice little surprise for the audience that aren’t quite ready to let him leave. The audience erupts into a virtual choir for Babylon, people are dancing in the aisles. Wrapping up with Say Hello, Wave Goodbye he ends the set with Sail Away.

David Gray is not only an exceptionally talented songwriter, he is an artist that lets you into his world, shows you parts of his soul and leaves you feeling a little exposed.

STEPH STRINGS ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘FEEL ALIVE’ SET FOR RELEASE FRIDAY JANUARY 9 2026 ALONGSIDE NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘DEVIL WOMAN’

Melbourne multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Steph Strings already has many strings, literally and figuratively, to her creative bow. But in early 2026, a brand new chapter will arrive in the form of Steph’s long-awaited debut album Feel Alive, set for release on Friday 9 January,2026. Heralding the announcement of her maiden full-length, Steph has also unveiled a new single and music video, with the smouldering country-pop track Devil Woman released today.

Laden with Steph’s trademark intricate guitarwork and emphatic lyricism, Devil Woman bustles with driving beats, hazy textures and hypnotic melodies, with Steph’s ardent vocals taking centre stage in sumptuous fashion. Boasting a bluesy swagger and hues of Elvis Presley, John Butler, Ash Grunwald, and Bella Mackenzie, Devil Woman also channels some cinematic (and real world) icons along with lashings of attitude, groove and powerful country-pop. The single is about an evil woman that will never change,” shares Steph. “I was picturing some iconic female villains when I was writing this, such as Cruella de Vil, Maleficent and Bellatrix Lestrange (and even some people I know personally!).  This really allowed me to exaggerate the idea of what a devil woman really is.”

Produced by 2023 GCMA Producer of the Year Jared Adlam and mastered by George Georgiadis (Royal Otis, Matt Corby, Hockey Dad), Devil Woman also leaps into vivid new waters for Steph via the track’s accompanying music video, stepping beyond her trademark coastal visual stylings for this brand-new chapter. “Jared really brought the song to life and pushed me to explore some punchy country sounds,” shares Steph. “And the film clip was produced by OneHouse Productions (Boy & Bear, 360, Jerome Farah) who I’ve worked with since the very beginning. One of the founders (Fin Sampson) is my childhood friend. The first day we met at age 13, we promised we would make music videos together.”

Accompanying the single is a striking music video filmed in Little River, Victoria, and is a cinematic ode to dusty Americana. Shot in the back of an old truck, rumbling down the road, the Devil Woman music video combines wide, open landscapes with eye-catching guitar playing, feeling like you’re in an outback Americana movie; with banjos, silos and a theme of adventure! “I’ve always wanted to play guitar in the trailer of a car, speeding down a dirt road.” says Steph “and I finally got to live out that Americana dream!” The film clip is the perfect visual for this adventurous country hit, taking you on an outback journey leaving you wondering who is the devil woman?

Teaming up with producer Tim Hart (Boy & Bear) for the entirety of Feel Alive, along with Alice Ivy for the track Three Wishes and Adlam forDevil Woman, Steph’s upcoming debut album traverses gratitude, longing and chasing a dream, balanced by moments of folk, rock, country, pop and unbridled honesty. An album that simultaneously transports you deep into the psyche of Steph Strings while also presenting as a shimmering port in the storm against life’s woes or tribulations, Feel Alive kicks off via Gratefully with a folk-hued spark that resonates with warmth and reflection. From here, Feel Alive magnetically journeys through blazing swagger (Devil Woman) and percolating acoustics effortlessly coursing into a dreamy stupor laden with bliss and natural soundscapes (Waterfall), before diverting back to earth with a heartfelt and moody turn via Melbourne Blue. Between sparkling guitar and sanguine simplicity (Again), shuffling yet upbeat glimmers leaning into self-reflection and hope (Three Wishes), dynamic earworms that simultaneously kindle the senses and dazzle with a rock’n’roll spirit (Rockstar/Gypsy), and oscillatingsonic whimsy merged with raw – and very real-world – musings (Blood & Bone), Feel Alive continues to flourish with Steph’s dexterous stylings and delivery; a fact that only heightens in its final few tracks, balancing open-vein lyricism reminiscent of Stevie Nicks and the like (Heaven), an otherworldly piano-driven instrumental interlude (A Storm in April), country-soaked instrumentals blended with amiable melodies and messages of empowerment (title track Feel Alive), and, ultimately, the sublime vulnerability of closing track To Be Loved.

A truly gifted storyteller at her core, Steph Strings is a renowned singer-songwriter and guitarist, merging coastal fingerstyle indie rock with blues, folk and Celtic influences, along with percussive wizardry. A lover of laughter, big kick drums, sunset drinks, golden retrievers, and philosophical conversations, Steph found a passion for music at the age of 7, learning to play the piano before ultimately finding herself drawn to guitar. Starting guitar lessons at the age of 9, Steph has never looked back. Releasing her debut EP Allegoric Oceans in 2017, Steph’s ability to channel her influences and creative history into a sound entirely her own has only deepened with each new release, now in command of millions of streams and a global audience firmly mirroring her talent and determination.

In a live setting, Steph’s transformative sonic creations take on new life, capable of transporting you into another dimension purely with a guitar and her voice. And whether performing at home or abroad, touring with the likes of Vance Joy, Ziggy Alberts, The Cat Empire, Kim Churchill, Pierce Brothers and Jack Botts, or commanding onstage at her own headline shows, it’s little wonder Steph’s live dance card closing out 2025 and going well into 2026 is stacked, set to headline across North America this November, perform at Ocean Sounds Festival in Cowes in January, and then return overseas for an extensive UK and European headline run next March and April.

“Fans can expect to see a newfound energy, more singalongs and more dancing!” says Steph of her upcoming performances. “If they’re lucky, maybe even some tear-wrenching piano ballads too…”

But before Steph continues the beautiful whirlwind that is her ever-burgeoning creative adventures, the long-awaited release of her forth-coming debut album will quite literally be music to the ears of many; and the release today of Devil Woman is only the beginning of even more magic to come.

“Devil Woman feels like my first, official step into the new Steph Strings,” Steph shares. “It’s super special knowing that I get to show this other side of myself to the world. I have a feeling everyone is going to sense my shift in creativity and energy, and I feel that they are going to love it!”

“If I can leave any mark on the world, it would be to influence as many people as possible to find their freedom and feel alive,” adds Steph. “I really believe that my debut album Feel Alive can make people heal, dance, dream, cry, fall in love, reminisce and above all, FEEL. Every day I pinch myself because I feel so incredibly privileged to be able to write and perform, travel the world and live out my dream.”

Devil Woman is out today.

Feel Alive is due out Friday 9 January, 2026.

A conversation with Kirk Hammett and music journalist, Sean Sennett

Sydney, Friday November 14, 6pm

Join Kirk Hammett, legendary guitarist of the multi-platinum selling and nine times Grammy Award winning band METALLICA, for an intimate, live discussion that will take a deep dive into Kirk’s storied music career, and celebrate the launch of his new coffee table book, “The Collection: Kirk Hammett”. Tickets for the “Kirk Hammett The Collection: Live” book events are limited.

The event will be held at Sydney’s State Library on Friday 14 November,

from 6 – 7.30pm, with host, esteemed music journalist, Sean Sennett.

Tickets on sale now – see here for more.

Newly released worldwide via Gibson Publishing, “The Collection: Kirk Hammett” is a premium, hardcover coffee table book in which Kirk tells the stories behind the rare and highly collectible instruments he has used on hit records and on stages worldwide in front of millions of fans. “The Collection: Kirk Hammett” is available globally via Gibson.com and the Gibson Garage locations in three premium formats: limited signed and numbered Custom and Deluxe Editions and a Standard hardcover.

A 400-page premium coffee table book, “The Collection: Kirk Hammett” explores in unprecedented detail the extraordinary guitar collection and life in music of one of heavy metal’s true pioneers, Gibson signature artist Kirk Hammett. Shot on location in Hawaii and Los Angeles by legendary rock photographer Ross Halfin and featuring rare imagery from Halfin’s photo archives, this latest release from Gibson Publishing features exclusive new interviews with Hammett conducted by Chris Vinnicombe (Gibson editor-in-chief) and Mark Agnesi (Gibson director of brand experience).

“The Collection: Kirk Hammett” takes the deepest-ever dive into the METALLICA star’s eclectic guitar collection, documenting the instruments he has leaned on throughout his career, from his early days with Bay Area thrash trailblazers EXODUS to selling over 125 million albums worldwide and rocking out with METALLICA for over 40 years on the world’s biggest stages. Guitars under the microscope include Hammett’s storied 1979 Gibson Flying V and Greeny, the legendary 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard formerly owned by guitarists Peter Green and Gary Moore, and so much more. “The Collection: Kirk Hammett” is a must-have for fans of Kirk Hammett and METALLICA and anyone with an interest in fine guitars.

In a video teaser featuring narration from Jason Momoa, the actor — who is a longtime METALLICA fan — says: “Every guitar has a story, and the thrill of finding the right one can be as electrifying as any song it will play. Collecting is an obsession, a passion, and a never ending quest for discovering the perfect tone. No one knows this more than Kirk Hammett.”

Hammett was a member of EXODUS’s original lineup before replacing Dave Mustaine in METALLICA in 1983. In fact, Hammett was not only the person who came up with the EXODUS name, but also the first from the band to meet original EXODUS singer Paul Baloff and brought him into the group. With Hammett on guitar, METALLICA went on to record its debut album, “Kill ‘Em All”, later in 1983.

News: DESTROY ALL LINES ANNOUNCE NEW ALTERNATIVE EVENT AN EMO EXTRAVAGANZA

DESTROY ALL LINES ANNOUNCE NEW ALTERNATIVE EVENT
AN EMO EXTRAVAGANZA

HITTING MELBOURNE, SYDNEY AND BRISBANE IN FEBRAURY 2026
FEATURING ANBERLIN, CARTEL, HOT CHELLE RAE, BROADSIDE + THIS WILD LIFE

PRESALE SIGNUP

Time to dig up the old studded belt and dust off the eyeliner – Destroy All Lines is proud to announce An Emo Extravaganza, landing in Australia in February 2026. Tickets will be available Thursday 13 November at 9am local time via Destroy All Lines.

The inaugural An Emo Extravaganza unites a stacked international lineup headlined by Florida alt-rock icons Anberlin, alongside Atlanta pop-punk outfit Cartel, American Music Award winners Hot Chelle Rae, Virginia Beach rising stars Broadside, and acoustic emo duo This Wild Life. The event will launch at PICA Melbourne on Sunday 22nd February, followed by The Roundhouse in Sydney on Saturday 28th February and Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane on Sunday 1st March.

For more than two decades, Anberlin have remained a formidable force in the alt-rock world, boasting a wildly devoted fanbase who’ve come to rely on the cathartic power of their music. This year marks a milestone: the 20th anniversary of their seminal 2005 album Never Take Friendship Personal, which the band will perform in full, plus fan favourites, at An Emo Extravaganza. Fresh off the release of Nevertake, a reimagined version of the beloved record celebrating its legacy, Anberlin are entering a new chapter with Matty Mullins (Memphis May Fire) stepping in as live vocalist. Fans can expect a rare and nostalgic set that bridges the past and the present. As Scenestr Magazine wrote of their last visit in 2024, “tonight further cements the bond that has transcended generations of Aussies in love with Anberlin’s music,” while The Rockpit praised “the sustained energy of the band, always a trademark, and a wonder to behold.” X-Press Magazine summed it up best: “The entirety of Anberlin’s set served as a testament to their versatility, staying power, and their ability to deliver one of the best live shows in the world.”

Joining Anberlin on the lineup is Cartel, returning to Australia for the first time in over a decade. Breaking out in the mid-aughts, Cartel artfully threaded the space between the turn-of-the-millennium pop-punk tidal wave and the widespread virality of the social media generation. As the group stares down the 20th anniversary of their 2005 breakthrough LP, Chroma, they do so with both an appreciation for what their past has afforded them and an excitement for what the future holds. Chroma spawned the Gold-certified hit Honestly,” and catapulted the childhood friends onto Warped Tour, TRL, Epic Records, and millions of MySpace Top 8s. Now, two decades later, Cartel are set to perform Chroma in full at the, revisiting the album that inspired a generation.

Hot Chelle Rae join the bill fresh off a resurgence that’s reminded fans of their knack for hook-filled pop-rock anthems. Known for their triple-platinum hit Tonight Tonight” and Top 40 singleI Like It Like That,” both off their sophomore album Whatever, the Nashville trio honed their stagecraft touring with Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, and Justin Bieber. After a brief hiatus to focus on songwriting, the band returned reenergised, bringing with them a new batch of tunes and a sound indicative of their growth as writers and people. For An Emo Extravaganza they’ll walk down memory lane, performing Whatever in full.

Broadside make their Australian debut at An Emo Extravaganza. A band who has spent the past decade carving their own path in pop-rock world. Drawing influence from The Killers, AFI, Kings of Leon, and Taking Back Sunday, their evolution has been nothing short of remarkable, taking them from underground favourites to genre staples. Now entering a new chapter with Thriller Records, the band remain driven by passion, friendship, and the belief that growth is essential.

Long Beach duo This Wild Life will perform their debut album Clouded in full. Formed by two drummers-turned-songwriters, the pair began as a full band before stripping things back to acoustic guitars and harmonies – a move that would come to define their sound. Clouded became a breakout success in 2014, leading to global tours with the likes of Pierce the Veil, Dashboard Confessional, and New Found Glory, plus back-to-back runs on Warped Tour.

Keeping the vibes high all day, AM//PM and Taking Back Saturday DJs will be spinning all the best emo anthems between sets. An unmissable celebration of all things alt, An Emo Extravaganza 2026 brings together the past, present, and future of alternative music. Testeagles

Max Watts, Melbourne November 03

Testeagles  hit the road in celebration of the 25th anniversary of arguably one of the nation’s seminal nu-metal albums, Non Comprehendus, making a stop in Melbourne on Cup eve to play to a dedicated group of fans. Testeagles, sometimes referred to as “TEs” or ”Testes”, are a three-piece rock band which formed in Adelaide, South Australia in 1994. After seventeen years, the band got together for a one-off reformation at last year’s Froth & Fury festival in Adelaide. It was their first live performance since 2008, and the response was nothing short of explosive.

News: AFTERNOON DELIGHT STONE & WOOD ENLISTS UNLIKELY TRIO TO SOUNDTRACK YOUR SUMMER AFTERNOONS

AFTERNOON DELIGHT
STONE & WOOD ENLISTS UNLIKELY TRIO
TO SOUNDTRACK YOUR SUMMER AFTERNOONS

Stone & Wood is heading into Summer 2025 with a surprising creative collaboration that puts music and art at the centre of its biggest campaign to date.

Titled Afternoon Delight, the campaign reimagines the classic 1976 track with a new recording from an unlikely yet perfect trio, New Zealand Māori actor-musician Troy Kingi, surfer-artist Jaleesa Vincent, and the go-to drummer for everyone you know and love (Ruby Fields, Adam Newling, Lazywax, Warbaby), Patrick Rogers. Recorded earlier this year, the result is a fresh spin on a classic anthem. It’s more about beers with mates on the beach than quick afternoon flings.

The track is accompanied by an equally delightful three-minute music video, filmed in the Stone & Wood heartland of Byron Bay. Conceived and produced by Monster Children Creative and directed by award-winning filmmaker Hamish Bennett (best known for his film ‘Uproar’), the video captures the laidback rhythm of long summer afternoons. Known for his sensitive, character-driven storytelling, for Afternoon Delight Bennett captures Troy, Jaleesa and Patrick in a car, by the ocean, contemplating life’s big topics – surfing, Rubik’s Cubing and tap dancing.

Troy Kingi (Te Arawa, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-ā-Apanui) is a multi-award-winning, genre-defying musician, actor, and storyteller from Rotorua and Te Kahai. Famed for his ambitious 10|10|10 project – 10 albums in 10 genres in 10 years – alongside standout film roles in Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Mt Zion, Troy is a prolific songwriter and collaborator and provides the smooth lead vocal and guitar on Afternoon Delight.

Jaleesa Vincent is a fearless free surfer, musician, and creative wildcard from the Sunshine Coast. Thriving outside competition, she drops surreal surf edits, shapes boards, makes art, and even squeezes in taxidermy and tap dancing between barrels. Colourful, chaotic, and unapologetically original, Jaleesa keeps everyone guessing in and out of the water. Front and centre for cabaret punk band Cupid & the Stupids Jaleesa also created the first-ever surf musical, Juju The Surf Musical. She brings her guitar skills and dreamy backing vocals to the track.

Patrick Rogers is one of Australia’s most in-demand drummers, driving the rhythm for Ruby Fields, Adam Newling, Lazywax, Warbaby, Dylan Wright and more. He brings the perfect relaxed beat and deadpan brilliance to Afternoon Delight.

Afternoon Delight blends film, music, beer and place into a portrait of summer. It’s about slowing down, reconnecting and celebrating those fleeting moments that make the season, drives along the coast, laughter with friends, ocean swims and a cold beer at sunset to end the warm day.

Lion Head of Strategy & Creative, Craft & Premium Paul Tansley said, “We’ve had a lot of fun bringing this idea to life. It’s an iconic, feel-good song that captures the relaxed Stone & Wood occasion and just makes you want to get together with friends to catch up over a beer.”

Lion Executive General Manager – Marketing, Glen Brasington said, “The afternoon delight campaign is the largest for Stone & Wood to date, we’re looking forward to seeing people’s reactions and the impact it has to the market.”

News: The Pretty Reckless ‘Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas’ Holiday EP Out Now

THE PRETTY RECKLESS
TAYLOR MOMSEN’S PRETTY RECKLESS CHRISTMAS
HOLIDAY EP OUT NOW

FEATURING A REIMAGINED VERSION OF WHERE ARE YOU CHRISTMAS? FROM HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS + FOUR ORIGINAL NEW SONGS

Just in time for the holidays, acclaimed rock powerhouse The Pretty Reckless return with a new seasonal release, Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas. The EP features a reimagined version of Where Are You Christmas? from the timeless and iconic How the Grinch Stole Christmasalongside four original tracks that preserve the band’s signature edge and energy, this time in a festive holiday setting. The EP can be streamed digitally now and will be available physically November 14th via Fearless Records.

The first single, Where Are You Christmas?, reimagines the beloved holiday classic Momsen first performed as Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This marks the first time Momsen has revisited the song since The Grinch’s release 25 years ago — transforming the heartwarming holiday ballad into a refreshed rock anthem.

Alongside Where Are You Christmas?, the EP introduces four new songs that still channel The Pretty Reckless’ passion and defiance, redefining what a Christmas record is traditionally supposed to sound like. Sonically, the EP spans the full spectrum of the emotions felt during the season, from stripped-back, expressive ballads to harder-hitting, grittier tracks.

While some songs lean into a more familiar holiday warmth, like I Wanna Be Your Christmas Tree others carry the sentiment of The Pretty Reckless’ rock foundation, like Christmas Is Killing Me. The result is a collection that feels recognizable yet distinctly their own. Momsen’s dynamic vocals tie it all together, adding depth, bite, and power to music that’s both soulful and timeless.

Watch the visualizer for Where Are You Christmas? here:
Speaking about the EP, Taylor said: “Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas started as just one song, but the moment we got into the studio, it took on a life of its own. There was so much emotion, nostalgia and chaos wrapped up in it that it didn’t feel right to leave it standing alone. To really honor it, I needed to build a whole world around it. That’s how this project became a full body of work. Something bigger, deeper and far more personal than I ever expected.”

Since their debut, The Pretty Reckless have carved out a place as one of rock’s most fearless and successful acts, with multiple No. 1 singles and a reputation for pushing boundaries in the industry. Their latest single For I Am Death debuted in the Top 5 of Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart and only continues to grow at radio. Taylor, who will take the stage at this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on November 8, continues to lead the charge. With Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas, the band delivers the ultimate gift for fans old and new: a holiday collection that breaks tradition, reflects their artistic evolution, and captures the authenticity that has characterized their sound from the start.
