27 Listicle Series: Port Royal

Port Royal proudly wear their vintage rock n roll influences on their tie dyed, flowing sleeves. In an era where everything old is new again, the quartet channel rocks forefathers and put them on display for a new generation to fall in love with.

My Fave bands by Connor Arnold  (drums)

1. The Beatles
This goes without saying really. Easily one of the greatest and most influential rock/ pop bands of all time. From their music, fashion and overall influence, these 4 Liverpool boys have left a mark on music that can never be erased. The Beatles have had an incredible impact on the way that we write and perform our music. Our bass player Chase is a Beatles fanatic and always has a little piece of Beatles trivia that keeps as all continuously intrigued and amazed.
2. The Rolling Stones
Ladies and Gentleman, ‘The Rolling Stones!’
The Stones are probably the closest thing that we are compared to musically. Classic blues inspired Rock’n’Roll. From the stage presence of Jagger to the catchy licks of Richards, the Stones are everything we aspire to be. Our lead singer Lawson is continuously told how much he resembles Mr Jagger which I think is more Lawson’s doing than genetics. Flares, wavy long hair and a flamboyance that cannot be experience firsthand. Jagger definitely runs rings around our experimental lead singer but he can only try.
3. Led Zeppelin
Definitely a personal favourite of mine. In a conversation regarding the best bands of all time I think it would be criminal to leave Zep out of the Frame. The term ‘King of the Riff’ is one that I think sums up Led Zepellin. Zepellin has something very special, that much is for sure. I often like to think great bands have the combination of genius songwritting and supremely talented musicians. I think its safe to say that Zepellin has each of these bases covered.
4. The Doors
Mr Mojo rising. The long lasting memory that Jim Morrison and The Doors left the world will simply never be repeated. Their blend of blues and psychedelic rock is truly special. On top of the soaring vocals of Jim Morrison, the lighting hands of Ray Manzarek on keyboard creates such an ambience of brilliance that pleases on every listen. All we can do now is thank The Doors for their masterful song writing and celebrate the effect that they had on guitar music.
5. Queen
AYE OH.
Who could ever forget the first time they watched the famous Queen performance at Wembley for Live Aid. I remember my Dad owning a DVD copy of the concert and showing me that performance for the first time. The way that Freddie Mercury was able to completely control a live audience and produce a performance that leaves the listener in complete awe, even If you are watching on YouTube!

A tsunami of raw punk rock energy, potent street poetry and catchy-as-hell pop sensibilities, English fireball YUNGBLUD returns to Australia in 2019 for a blazing run of shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Perth.These highly anticipated performances will give YUNGBLUD a chance to show off hits from his debut album 21st Century Liability like ͚I Love You, Will You Marry Me?͛ and͚Polygraph Eyes͛.

He͛’ll also get the chance to say G͛day to a growing fanbase that are falling fast for his fearless social commentary and electric personality. In fact, Australian fans are still reeling from YUNGBLUD͛s now infamous Splendour in the Grass set in July. Appearing at 1pm on a sun drenched Byron day, the somewhat pale but by no means withdrawn Doncaster native put on a show that quickly became the talk of the festival. With limbs flying and lyrics flowing, he coaxed thousands of punters from their mid-morning malaise and produced a plethora of singalong moments.

Describing 21st Century Liability as ͞an accumulation of all the frustration, the oppression, the suppression, the excitement, every kind of emotion I felt all my life leading up to this moment͟, the man known to his friends as Dominic Harrison made an immediate impact when he burst onto the UK music scene with debut single ͚King Charles͛ in 2017. Inspired by heroes Jamie T and Arctic Monkeys while tipping his hat to hip-hop, ska and punk rock the new Londoner locked in with fans Down Under with his second single ͚I Love You, Will You Marry Me͛. A huge triple j hit, it tells the story of a piece of proposal graffiti scrawled in a Northern England council flat that was re-purposed by developers to sell gentrification. The artist wound up homeless in a devastating piece of modern irony.

It͛s a heavy subject for sure, but one that Harrison wasn͛’t afraid to tackle as he turned the song into a jumped up mini-anthem for a new generation. There͛’s plenty more to come too, as new single ͚Kill Somebody͛ picks up steam and punters start getting wise to YUNGBLUD͛s antics. These very special shows will be nothing short of glorious chaos.

Spectoral, the stage name of producer singer-songwriter
Andrew Bitto. Combining his trademark future-soul vocals with textured and detailed production techniques, Spectoral has spent the past few years honing his craft with a plethora of notable industry heavyweights. Readying a sophomore EP with names such as Tim Watt & Tim McArtney (George Maple, Flume, Touch Sensitive), Ben Feggans (The Kite String Tangle, Ngaiire), Sebastian Ivanhov (Alius, Blake Rose), Robin Waters (Darling James, Ella Hooper) and Klaus ‘Heavyweight’ Hill (Pnau, Kilter, Ministry of Sound Australia), Spectoral is positioned to kick increasingly ambitious goals in 2018.

Kanye West & Kid Kudi – Kids See Ghosts
 
Starting the list with one of my fav albums of 2018, the surprisingly great Kids See Ghosts. Kanye has always been on creative form for me, but Kudi hasn’t released anything that really got more than a “meh” from me for years. It’s super clear that these two have brought out the absolute best in each other creatively. Kanye’s influence on Kudi with the ever-changing tapestry of production pays off, it’s like a patchwork quilt that sees switch-ups and guest vocalists come out of nowhere every second minute. Meanwhile Kudi brings his dark, almost grunge atmosphere to the project, even sampling Nirvana. It’s magic in a bottle. Don’t know if they could pull it off again, but I hope they try.
 
James Blake & Bon Iver – I Need A Forest Fire
 
As soon as I heard Bon Iver and James Blake were doing a track together, I fanboi’d quite hard. Match made in heaven, right?! Especially in the same year that Justin Vernon dropped that experimental-as-fudge album, “22, A Million”. It was a bit hit and miss of an album for me, but I appreciated him breaking new ground like that. Him teaming up with Blake, for what would go on to be a highlight from his 2013 sophomore “The Colour In Anything”, was the perfect move. This collab resulted in this controlled, minimalistic, earwormy ballad where their two male vocals blend in and out of one another’s hauntingly. I’m never really sure who is singing what. Two of the greatest falsetto singer-songwriter producers in the game right now.
 
Herbie Hancock & John Mayer – Stitched Up
 
It’s no secret I’m a massive Mayer fan to this day. I envy the guy’s ability to write super contained lyrics so eloquently and personally about moments in his life, sharing so many vulnerabilities, while being one god damn fine guitarist. I’ve never even played a chord on a guitar, but damn. So when jazz legend Herbie Hancock teamed up with Mayer back in 2005 and make it the lead single from his 39th studio album (not a typo… now he has 41) it was the first time I’d heard Mayer leave the guitar behind completely and sing over jazz piano. It works so well, it’s one of the catchiest songs you’ll ever hear in the genre.
 
Ben Gibbard & Jimmy Tamborello – The Postal Service 
 
The Postal Service’s one and only album, Give Up, is one of the biggest influences on not only my music but probably every electronic singer-songwriter who came after 2005. It proved that deep, introspective, thoughtful, “alternative” lyricism could be blended with envelope-pushing bleeps-and-bloops and textures and be a commercial success without sounding like Fireflies by Owl City. An absolute classic in every sense of the word, the album makes every top list of the 2000s, and I consider it a tragedy that both Dntel (Jimmy) and Death Cab For Cutie (Ben & co) have let both their solo projects slip into a bit of mediocrity in order to keep pumping out material, instead of coming back together to bring the most out of one another in a new decade.
 
Kendrick Lamar & Flying Lotus – Wesley’s Theory
 
I still can’t believe 2015’s To Pimp A Butterfly didn’t get a Grammy for Best Album and lost out to Taylor Swift’s 1989. So few artists manage to write a commercially successful Billboard topping album that’s chock full of cultural significance, political and moral significance, be the absolute zeitgeist of the times, be cohesive from start to finish and operate like a concept album, AND have the most incredible blend of hip-hop, jazz and trap production I’ve ever heard. Hands down. Jazz on a hip hop album? Bring in FlyLo, who said, via Tweets, “I played him a folder of beats that I was keeping close for my next @xCaptainMurphyx project. Gave him all the beats like fuxk it. Later that night he told me he had the concept for the album. He gets no credit for being a producer but he had a vision for this album. Dude gets involved w the whole process. Sad thing about that folder of music is I heard he recorded to every one of those songs. Probably never gon hear those. Ooof. I produced a version of “for sale” that will probably never come out. I’ll probably use those beats for something else but damn. It could have been.”

News: Maverick drop filmclip for ‘Nothin’ to Lose’, November tour dates on sale now

Maverick are straight fire. The 5 piece punk/metal band from the South Eastern suburbs of Sydney are today dropping serious heat with their brand new filmclip for single Nothin’ To Lose. Filmed around a steadily rising bonfire, the video seems almost cathartic – the band seem to be unleashing everything they have into the ether and piling up more and more fuel for the fire. The sparks fly and the intensity increases throughout the filmclip.

Single Nothin’ To Lose was released on Friday October 19 and promptly was played on triple j’s Short Fast Loud and added to Rotation on The Faction. The single and video comes ahead of a string of East Coast tour dates in November!

Maverick have shared the stage with US legends Unwritten Law to local heroes Trophy Eyes and Hellions, not to mention consistently featuring on some of the heaviest lineups in Sydney, the guys constantly find themselves entertaining fans of a variety of different music tastes. They will take the stage to showcase at Australian Music Week’s inaugural Heavy Music Showcase on November 8.

Lyrically, the song explores the concept of removing things from one’s life to focus wholeheartedly on what is really important, something one learns being in the early stages of a band’s life cycle. Everyone has things that act as ‘Energy Vampires’ in their lives and being able to identify them and effectively remove them is essential for progression. The hope is that the track can inspire others to take a look at where they’re spending their time and potentially make changes for the better.

KESMAR is a new chapter for Sydney musician Nathan Hawes. Having first picked up a guitar
in 2006, Hawes spent over a decade serenading audiences with his folk tunes with great
success. Considering his musical background, Hawes’ latest evolution into KESMAR comes as
an eyebrow-raising surprise. He’s traded his acoustic guitar for swirling synths, introducing a
more disco-oriented chapter of his career. Conceived from writing sessions in 2016, where
he “basically fell in love with learning production and vintage synthesisers.”

Benny Sings
Ah my favourite dutch producer / writer . He’s now probably most recognisable from his collaboration with Rex Orange County on ‘Loving Is Easy’. After listening to his music for a while you can hear his influence on the track, mainly his harmonies tie everything together for me. He always seems to find a great bop in a track. One of my favourite all time tracks would be ‘Rebuilding the Omega Man’. It features a huge sax solo and key change, what else could you want right? 
Her’s
Found these boys about a year ago just on suggested artist on Spotify and haven’t stopped listening since. Great song writing and production. They just release a new record this year too that is amazing. ‘What Once Was’ is a track that has stuck with me since first listen, I can never get enough of it. 
Soulwax 
I feel like the Soulwax guys are always pushing for new ways to record, produce and just make sounds. The whole three drummers merged into one in ‘It’s Always Binary’ is just mental. When seeing the live clip of it live just took my breath away. I think I first heard them on a Tame Impala remix of ‘Let It Happen’ and they’ve had me hooked ever since. Their new record ‘Essential’ has been a big rotation in the past month. 
Sports 
I don’t think I’ll ever not like a track from these guys. Everything they do is always pushing the creative boundaries. From their production to visuals and tour posters, everything seems so well planned and thought out. I think that’s what really catches me with an artist’s or band’s when the music and imaging marry together. It sounds like they’ve changed a little from previous records but totally in love with their new album ‘Everyone’s Invited’.
Roosevelt 
Roosevelt has been a favourite of mine for a while now. He’s been a huge inspiration for this project. First hearing ‘Montreal’ I think opened my ears massively to the Berlin alternative disco scene. He’s definitely one of my favourite producers. From his punchy bass sounds to lush crunchy drums sounds, I could never find a fault. Essentially he’s writing pop music but they way he incorporates the experimental disco-like feel to his records makes it hard not to have a good time to.

27 Listicle Series: Darling

New to the scene, Sydney duo Darling are your latest obsession. Together they make acoustic love songs and get you right in the feels. Darling began writing songs together after Seryna Jane saw Rudy Bilani busking in Sydney. Bilani brought the song to Seryna to help craft ‘Until It Hurts’ into their first single, accompanied by stunning visuals. She added her own poetic touches to the lyrics, as well as her talent for composing stunning harmonies.

 

We ask Darling who their favourite music duos are below.

 

Angus & Julia Stone –

 

This brother and sister duo’s raw emotional lyrics and style are mesmerising, and the way they blend their voices creates a distinct sound that is like no one else in the industry. They’ve managed to bring indie folk to the mainstream and relate to a wide audience, which is a feat we hope to accomplish with our own music. Timeless lyrics and melodies are one of our aims, and these guys give us plenty of ideas for our own musical creativity.

The Civil Wars –

 

Their exquisite harmonies and beautiful (and somewhat dark) messages conveyed in their songs are so deep and thought-provoking that it’s almost impossible to listen without repeating. We love the contrast in their voices and the way they can take an upbeat song and strip it back to suit their style. Their cover of Billie Jean remains a favourite of ours.

Us the Duo –

 

Their fun attitude and creative approach to song writing is contagious. They make music look so fun, and the way they marketed themselves on social media platforms such as YouTube over the years is admirable. We love the way they take time out for writing retreats to free their mind and focus solely on writing new music, and this is certainly an idea that has inspired us. They are young and enthusiastic (just as we like to think we are).

Simon and Garfunkel – 

 

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel came together to be greater than the sum of their parts. Even as their relationship became tumultuous, they were dedicated to their craft and even made their most successful studio album after reuniting following a break up. In addition to writing beautiful melodies and singing haunting harmonies, their poetic lyrics deeply influenced an entire generation and continue to impact people today.

 

Steely Dan – 

 

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen brought a dedication to perfectionism to all the music they crafted as Steely Dan. Their clever, biting lyrics managed to bring humour and satire to some intense subject matters. They also infused their pop music with a jazz sensibility that made their work stand out from their peers in the 1970s, and their technical abilities as musicians are a master class for any aspiring songwriters.

In 2018, The Age and Music Victoria are proud to announce the induction of Divinyls front woman and Victorian legend Chrissy Amphlett, after recently inducting Molly Meldrum at his statue unveiling in Richmond.

The induction will be accompanied by a special performance from Ella Hooper with Dallas Frasca and speech from Little Pattie. Chrissy and Molly’s Hall of Fame entries join past inductee’s Triple R 102.7FM, John Farnham, AC/DC, Olivia Newton John, Archie Roach, Paul Kelly just to name a few.

‘’Chrissy has a Melbourne city street named after her and a mural in her hometown of Geelong, and it’s about time she was inducted into the Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame,’’ said Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan. ‘’While she may have left us five years ago, her influence lives on in acts such as Amyl and the Sniffers, Ella Hooper and Dallas Frasca.’’
