News: Flynn Effect release new single ‘Andromeda’ and announce Melbourne Launch Show

Melbourne’s FLYNN EFFECT are back in 2021! They return from a 2020-sized absence from the scene with the first taste of the record they wrote and recorded last year, a planet-sized song called ‘Andromeda’. The track will be released on Friday February 19 – available at https://ditto.fm/andromeda-flynn-effect.

Vocalist, Tomina Vincent, said that “We wrote Andromeda in 2020, while the whole world was in chaos. Amid the fear of what was to come and the social unrest, we wanted to imagine a world where solidarity and togetherness are commonplace and the bedrock of our human experience. We are in the midst of a transformation – our way of life and the structures designed to operate in our world are evolving for the first time in this generation, as it finds its voice and what it stands for. Fighting for change and breaking down the divides that separate us is the most important thing for us as a species, as we try to rebuild and create a future we can be proud of.”

Continuing about the single’s intentions and themes, Vincent said that “We wanted to bring a sense of hope and focus on the realisation that even if we are frightened of this change, even if the fight is difficult and never-ending, and the prospect of reimagining our way of life is intimidating, many voices are rising, and we are not alone. Andromeda is that alternative world, where we forget countries and borders, and we come together as one entity, whose mission is to create a world of balance and peace.”

Flynn Effect are celebrating the release of the new single with a launch show at Forge Metal Nightclub on Saturday March 13 – which is held at Melbourne’s STAY GOLD. Joining them for the night is Treebeard and Colour & Shade. Tickets are $25 and are available now at EVENTBRITE.

Drowning in LED’s and wielding glowing instruments, Flynn Effect’s ambitious live performances have seen the band share the stage with rock and metal royalty, including The Tea Party, Lacuna Coil, Seether, Lindsay Schoolcraft (of Cradle of Filth), Wednesday 13, and Davey Suicide, local heavyweights Orpheus Omega and Osaka Punch, as well as take the stage at the 10th anniversary edition of Progfest in 2019.

Drawing influences from Coldplay to Birds of Tokyo, via Devin Townsend and Karnivool, the band concocted a blend of seemingly incompatible elements into a whimsical music burrito. In the six years since their inception, self-managed and self-produced (in a bedroom), Flynn Effect have released two studio albums – Skin in 2015 and Obsidian in 2017, followed by the 2018 release of their EP Monument and the 2019 Covers EP Giants, making the latter their 4th release in 6 years.

Flynn Effect’s new single ‘Andromeda’ will be released on Friday February 19 on all digital stores and streaming platforms and can be found at https://ditto.fm/andromeda-flynn-effect.Tickets are available now for their Single launch show at Forge Metal Nightclub Saturday March 13 at EVENTBRITE.

News: Myles Kennedy To Release Second Solo Album, The Ides Of March, on May 14. + Andrew W.K Releases New Single

MYLES KENNEDY
To Release Second Solo Album, The Ides Of March, on May 14

Watch the Video for Debut Single “In Stride”
Never a musician to waste any precious time, Alter Bridge and Slash and the Conspirators vocalist MYLES KENNEDY used the recent pandemic downtime to finalize his second solo album.

The finished result is the exciting new offering, The Ides Of March, which incorporates Myles’ love of rock, blues and country and is slated for release on May 14, 2021 via Napalm Records.

During his time at home due to all touring being canceled, Myles created the framework for the song ideas that would make up The Ides Of MarchHe then called up his cohorts from his Year Of The Tiger debut – longtime friend and drummer Zia Uddin and bassist/manager Tim Tournier – and the three musicians drove to Florida to record the album with longtime producer Michael “Elvis” Baskette. From the slide guitar riffs of the album opener “Get Along” to the pensive blues style of closer “Worried Mind,” it is clear that Myles has crafted a formidable follow up to his debut solo album. While Year Of The Tiger was more of an acoustic exploration through Myles’ mind, The Ides Of March finds him strapping on his electric guitar and pushing himself as a guitarist/songwriter. Tracks like “A Thousand Words,” “Wake Me When It’s Over” and “Moonshot” showcase the diverse musical arrangements that have garnered Myles fans globally across all of his projects. The epic “The Ides Of March” clocks in at over 7-minutes, and Myles, Tim and Zia showcase their musical chops on the track.

The first single, “In Stride”, opens with Myles showcasing his slide playing before delivering a lyrical message to “take it all in stride.” The video for “In Stride” marks a return by Stefano Bertelli (who created the recent “Native Son” video for Alter Bridge) and shows an animated Myles as he takes the end of the world in stride.

“Chill out. That pretty much sums it up,” explains MYLES KENNEDY about the single. “The lyric paints a picture of a survivalist preparing for an impending zombie apocalypse. It was inspired by the first wave of lockdowns as everyone was buying vast amounts of toilet paper and supplies. I started to ask myself if it might be wise to try and gain some perspective and not overreact… keep calm and carry on.”

Live Review: Gordi at Forum Melbourne

Live Review: Gordi at Forum Melbourne 18/2/21

Supported by Mimi Gilbert

Mimi Gilbert’s tells us it’s her first live show in a year and many in the audience tonight can relate. Originally from the United States, Gilbert is glad to be currently living on Australian shores right now. She shares a very emotional song that was written at the start of the pandemic called ‘Dark Storm’. After pouring her heart out for the track, she tells us that she’s feeling a bit less scared now that she’s on the other side of the tunnel.

The crowd listens intently to Gilbert’s soft harmonies and vulnerable story telling through song. The room is at a standstill and only her acoustic guitar and indie-folk tunes fill the air. She draws a comparison of our intent listening to the recent bird watching hobby she’s recently taken up.

Vintage light globes hang from the ceiling and placed on stands resembling floating orbs to illuminate the stage in a warm glow. Gordi appears behind a keyboard to begin with ‘Aeroplane Bathroom,’ which is the opener for her recently released album ‘Our Two Skins.’ She immediately captures our attention and draws us in to her ethereal soundscape.

“Tonight’s show almost didn’t happen,” she tells us nervously after Melbourne was only released from a lockdown less than 24 hours ago. As a result, there’s an early and a late show to accommodate the capacity limits and the audience is happy to have more than enough personal space to enjoy the show.

Alex Lahey joins Gordi for a surprise song the duo just released a week ago called ‘Dino’s.’ It’s a real treat to hear the song played by both artists together live for the first time. Inspired by a Nashville dive bar where they ate a lot of hot chicken and cold beers, the duo shares a laugh about making the video clip involving a Dolly Parton cardboard cut-out. Lahey stays on to continue playing bass guitar and Gordi then keeps the mood lifted as she sings the self-confessed one happy song (‘Extraordinary Life’) off her latest record.

She reminiscences the last time playing at The Forum she supported Icelandic singer Asgeir. It’s a dream come true for her to be headlining show here tonight and she makes sure she gets the vocal loop for ‘Heaven I know’ right this time minus any unwanted crowd woos. The song is built up beautifully before us and she makes a powerful connection as her immersive electro-acoustic blended sound washes over the audience.

Gordi explains the process of making her recent album in a cottage at her parent’s farm, ironically in isolation pre-COVID. The unique organic soundscape she used to record the songs includes a harmonica and a wasp’s nest she found in a sheep yard shed that she used to run the piano recording through to add warmth. She admits she’s glad to be back on stage in front of people in Melbourne and recreates the sounds as best she can in a live setting.

After a quick encore charade, she has two more songs prepared for us including ‘Radiator’ and her recent Triple J Like A Version cover of Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’. Gordi’s version is a bit more alternate with a guitar-heavy instrumentation and plenty of synth to give it a whole new feel and she absolutely knocks it out of the park.

News: The Oklahoma Kid releases alternative version of ‘Shaking Off the Disease’!

HE OKLAHOMA KID stands for breathtaking modern metal that bridges the gap between technical intricacy and energizing rhythms. Since their formation in 2012 the band – consisting of David J. Burtscher, Fred Stölzel, Robert Elfenbein, Tomm Brümmer and Andreas Reinhard – has consistently pushed the envelope and have established their foundation in the German metal scene.

Their 2014 debut EP Fortuneteller impressed the scene with their very own blending of genres:
“Fortuneteller encapsulates the very essence of the post-hardcore and metalcore genres, but effectively intertwines tech metal and crushing djent riffs into a very solid effort.”Kenny McGalem, Bandcamp

Already one year later the band added a second EP »Doppelganger« to their catalogue for which they hired acknowledged producer Aljoscha Sieg (ESKIMO CALLBOY, BUTTER THE BREAD WITH BUTTER, NASTY) and solidified their sonic vision. The band’s signature bouncing grooves and futuristic synthesizers were completed by catchy hooks and sing-alongs.

The band teamed up with visionary director Pavel Trebukhin (ALAZKA, STICK TO YOUR GUNS, ANNISOKAY) to create a unique music video for their hit-single ‘Scharlatan’, for which they would receive the national PopFish Music Video Award.

THE OKLAHOMA KID toured the country with renowned acts such as STICK TO YOUR GUNS, CARNIFEX, EVERGREEN TERRACE and HATEBREED and electrified crowds with their passionate, relentless performance.

They are no longer an insider tip and a force to be reckoned with. No matter if live at a festival or on the record player in the living room; THE OKLAHOMA KID will change your perception of what metal is capable of.

News: THE RUBENS’ FOURTH ALBUM 0202 DEBUTS AT #1 ON THE ARIA ALBUM CHART

THE RUBENS
FOURTH ALBUM 0202 DEBUTS AT #1 ON THE ARIA ALBUM CHART!
Ivy League Records are incredibly proud to announce that 0202 – the exceptional new album by local legends, The Rubens – has debuted at #1 on the ARIA Album Chart! This achievement made even sweeter as it crowns the band’s 4th studio album and marks their first #1 record in their decade-long career. Proving to be more relevant now than ever, The Rubens boundary pushing album 0202 sees the band behind the production desk for the first time and features hit singles ‘Live In Life’ (double Platinum, ARIA Song of the Year nominee & the fourth biggest Australian song of 2020 (ARIA)),‘Time Of My Life’, Heavy Weather‘ & current single ‘Masterpiece.

We are absolutely thrilled to take out #1 on our fourth album, the first time to land the position for us. We uploaded our first track on triple j unearthed ten years ago and to be still doing what we love and connecting with fans all over the world means so much to us, especially after such a tough year for our industry as a whole. To Ivy League Records/Mushroom, Grow Yourself Up and the rest of our team, thanks for your hard work and support. To our families, absolute rocks. To our fans old and new, thank you for coming on our journey and getting behind us. We cannot wait to hit the road to share the new album live.
– The Rubens

This is such an incredible achievement and one that feels extra sweet as it comes on the band’s 4th record. To stay at the top of your game for a decade is no mean feat and it is all due to The Rubens’ incredible ability to grow, experiment and embrace the new. The great, late Pete Lusty signed the band back in 2011 and we know he is celebrating this with us right now, double scotch in hand. This one’s for him. Congratulations The Rubens!
– A&R Director, Marihuzka Cornelius, on behalf of Ivy League Records

With 0202 the band have fully transformed into an alt-rock/pop powerhouse and, for the first time, have self-produced an album that will have people re-evaluating what they thought they knew about The Rubens.

By the time album opener and absolute belter ‘Masterpiece’ comes to an end, it becomes very clear that The Rubens have emerged inspired from all the twists and turns thrown at them in 2020 and injected a new energy into this incredible record. 0202, a forward-thinking album for a backward year, sees The Rubens creating a sound that effortlessly dances across genres – alt-rock, rnb, pop and hip hop all collide into something uniquely their own.

0202 follows third album LO LA RU, which featured hits ‘Never Ever (feat Sarah)’ (Double Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Certified Gold), ‘God Forgot’ (Certified Gold) and lead to sold out shows and a 42-date Arena tour supporting megastar P!NK. Their second album Hoops saw the band sell out headline shows at Hordern Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena and included hits ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Cut Me Loose’ and of course the 4 x Platinum the hit title track, which topped the 2015 triple j Hottest 100, while their debut self-titled LP was home to ‘My Gun’ (Certified Platinum), ‘Lay It Down’ (Certified Gold), ‘The Best We Got’ and more fan-favourites.

The Rubens will finish their regional NSW album launch shows tomorrow night in Thirroul (sold out) before kicking off their official 0202 album tour from April – July, playing metro cities as well as regional venues across their biggest headline tour to date.

A huge congratulations to The Rubens!

News: Peter Hook & The Light – Joy Division: A Celebration 2022 Australian Tour Announcement

Peter Hook & The Light – Joy Division: A Celebration

Peter Hook & The Light return to Australia & New Zealand in 2022 to perform Joy Division’s landmark albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer, in full and sequential order. Plus as a special bonus they will perform an opening set of New Ordermaterial

Joy Division co-founder and bassist was part of the band for the entirety of their four-year career before going on to co-found New Order with his surviving Joy Division band mates. This tour commemorates the legacy and influence of Joy Division and celebrates a decade of consistent touring from Peter Hook & The Light.

Released in 1979, Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division’s debut album. With its now iconic, sleek, minimalist cover art and energetic yet melancholic songs, Unknown Pleasures looked and sounded unlike anything else. Songs such as Disorder, Shadowplay, New Dawn Fades and She’s Lost Control have a power that would not be denied and will not fade. Unknown Pleasuresincredibly reached #1 in New Zealand and the last four decades has earned consistent praise as one of the most pivotal and influential post punk records ever. Publications such as NME, Mojo, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and Spin have all recognised Unknown Pleasures as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Closer was released in 1980, two months after the suicide of Joy Division’s frontman and lyricist, Ian Curtis. Surrounded by tragic circumstance and with songs full of panic, passion and emotional anguish, Pitchfork described it as “Joy Division’s start-to-finish masterpiece, a flawless encapsulation of everything the group sought to achieve.” Tracks such as Isolation, Atrocity Exhibitionand Heart and Soul saw Closer reach #23 in Australia and #3 in New Zealand. Like its predecessor, Closer has only grown in appeal and esteem and it is consistently named as one of the best albums of all time.

Peter Hook formed The Light to keep the music of Joy Division alive and has spent the last decade performing the works of both Joy Division and New Order to sold out audiences around the world. These shows are the only way to experience Joy Division’s iconic discography performed with the sincerity and authenticity of one of its founding members.

Peter Hook & The Light perform the Joy Division albums Unknown Pleasures & Closer Plus and Opening Set of New Order material.

“I never had any idea that I would play anywhere apart from Manchester that one night (May 18, 2010), I have been asked to play all around the world and everywhere we have gone we have gotten a great reception… after denying Joy Division, to actually get the music back” – Peter Hook

yes, it is impossible to see a Joy Division concert, but thanks to Peter Hook & the Light, this is the damned closest we can getspectrumculture.org

Hook once again proves that hes able to bring the spirit of his fallen brother back to life, if only fleetingly, and night after night honour him with a fitting tributepinnaclemusic.org

News: Hayley Mary Shares New Single And Video ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’

HAYLEY MARY
SHARES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO
‘WOULD YOU THROW A DIAMOND?’
I OH YOU are excited to share ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’, an explosive rock banger from Hayley Mary. Premiered by Richard Kingsmill on triple j, the new single comes with an energetic, 70’s-tinged video that features bold fashion moments and Hayley’s iconic dance moves. Stemming from an old idea of Hayley Mary’s partner Johnny, ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is an ode to all the songs that almost didn’t make it.

“‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ started as an old idea of my boyfriend Johnny’s that he had all but thrown out. I could see it was a proper diamond in the dirt that just needed brushing off and shining up.

I changed up the vibe and added some new parts and lyrics to bring out the idea of thinking first before throwing away a thing of inherent value, just because you’re not sure what to do with it right then and there. You never know what new element is around the corner that can bring out the best in something old. So, we named the song ‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ in the spirit of what the song was about and the process by which it came together.” – Hayley Mary

On the making of the video that premiered overnight on Gigwise (UK), Hayley reflects: “My dad brought me up to have an almost unhealthy sympathy for the magical old objects one can find in a thrift store. He loved old cars and would never throw anything out, always seeing the treasure in other people’s trash. Pretty much everything that appears in the video is pre-loved or pre-lived in or a little dilapidated, but beautiful Lucy Knox, the director even had a pile of old film lying around at her house, which we also used.”

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ follows previous single ‘The Chain’ – Hayley’s first single since her debut EP The Piss, The Perfume was released to critical acclaim last year – which saw acclaim from The Line of Best Fit, Paste, Idolator and NME, along with an accompanying video which gained over 40 thousand streams in its first two weeks. The track was closely followed by ‘The Chain (Nude Version)’ which has taken off at streaming platforms, drawing an even wider audience through inclusion on a multitude of acoustic playlists.

‘Would You Throw A Diamond?’ is a vibrant reminder of Hayley Mary’s intrinsic ability to create and evolve, and while as a solo artist she might be new to the scene, she is no stranger to compelling song writing.

Hayley Mary recently performed live on Tik Tok as a part of Isolaid Festival, after freshly finishing a nine-date tour of Victoria and is excited at the prospect of taking her live show across state lines this year.

“This whole album is none other than perfect.” Rawing In The Pit Media

“Channelling her pain and despair, vocalist Taylor Momsen has excelled in every facet of the album.” – Heavy Magazine, 8.5/10

“Voices like Momsen’s come along so rarely these days; her vocals on this record are some of the best female vocals this side of the 80s, and with lyrics like On my tombstone when I go / just put ‘Death By Rock and Roll, she has cemented her place in history as a queen of rock!” – Spotlight Report, 5/5

“From big rock moves to heartfelt acoustic moments and a splash of country, The Pretty Reckless have found their place, and their soul.” Loud Online

“…the music is the best we have seen so far from the band.”Hear2Zen

BUY DEATH BY ROCK AND ROLL HERE

The album, which follows 2010’s Light Me Up, 2014’s Going to Hell, and 2016’s Who You Selling For, is titled after the first single, which rocketed to No. 1 on the rock charts in the US and held strong for several weeks. It marked the fifth No. 1 single of the band’s career and was heralded by Paper, Loudwire, CNN, Forbes, and more. The band also has the incredible and impressive distinction of being the first female-fronted band to have back-to-back No. 1 singles at the active rock format and the first female-fronted act to have five No.1 singles on the Billboard chart.

Watch the official video for And So It Went (feat. Tom Morello) here:
“The world has been in such a state of civil unrest,” singer Taylor Momsen. “‘And So It Went’ basically comes from that vision. As a songwriter, I feel like I’m not here to preach. I use music to observe and communicate what I see around me. This song felt like the perfect storm for Tom Morello to join in and rip the sound waves apart with his guitar. It was more than a pleasure having him add his unique and defining sound to the song.”

About working with the band, Morello shares, “I got to perform with Taylor Momsen at the Chris Cornell memorial show. We rocked ‘Loud Love’ and she nailed it — no easy task. Thank goodness she and her band continue to fly the flag for rock ‘n’ roll in a mighty way.”

You can watch the behind the scenes video here.

“In “Kickstart My Heart” the lyrics say, “When we started this band / All we needed, needed was a laugh / Years gone by, I’d say we’ve kicked some ass.”

It’s always been about great songs and over-the-top live shows for us. The fans were always right by our side. I don’t know where all of the years went. It went by in a flash. What I can’t forget, are the 4 decades of fans who have counted themselves as CRÜEHEADS from day one, supporting us through thick and thin. To them we are in debt and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Happy 40th Birthday to us all.” – Nikki Sixx
