First an indie sensation, then a stadium-slaying juggernaut, now experts in the subtle art of pop seduction, Irish heroes Two Door Cinema Club are celebrating the fevered reception to their just-dropped fourth record False Alarm with a string of unmissable appointments across Australia in November.

Described by Clash as “a game-changing record for the future of indie-rock”, False Alarm was released on June 21 and signals another chapter in the impressive re-birth of a band adored for their kinetic post-punk energy, world-weary lyricisms and recent forays into Kraftwerk-esque stylized synth-pop.

Led by the unmistakably sonorous vocals of Alex Trimble and backed with vigorous ease by Sam Halliday (bass) and Kevin Baird (drums), Two Door Cinema Club have been much-loved since they burst onto the landscape in 2009 with the release of their debut Tourist History.

Tracks from that record such as ‘Undercover Martyn’ and ‘What You Know’ were adopted as anthems of a nascent movement of UK based guitar acts catapulting themselves onto the worlds stage.

Bands like The Wombats and The Maccabees also lived inside this orbit and in the late-naughties, early-aughts it became impossible to escape the kind of razor-sharp songcraft that Trimble and his cohorts were unleashing.

From these wild origins, Two Door Cinema Club have built a steady catalogue of playlistable treasures. Their second record Beacon (2011), picked up where Tourist History left off, riding huge first single ‘Sleep Alone’ all the way to Number 4 on the ARIA charts here in Australia, where the band have always enjoyed a strong following.

Next up was Gameshow, an album released on the back of a self-enforced hiatus and period of soul searching for the band.

This third release signified a sonic shift, as the band worked with long-time producer (and fellow Irishman) Jacknife Lee (U2, REM, Weezer) on a more synth dominated universe; modifications that have continued into the release of False Alarm and its sci-fi spanning singles ‘Talk’ and ‘Dirty Air’.

A perpetual radio and festival favourite in Australia, Two Door Cinema Club are garnering some of the best reviews of their career for their latest outing, with Dork raving False Alarm is ‘an album packed with more ideas than many bands manage in an entire career’.

Capaldi has had a sensational 18 months in which his lovelorn songcraft and mind-blowing vocal abilities have bewitched listeners both at home and abroad.

Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent is the UK’s fastest selling debut of 2019 so far and tickets to his March 2020 tour of the UK and Ireland have disappeared within seconds of going on sale.

Still only 22, the sometimes heartbroken, often cheeky Scot’s signature tune is the extraordinary ‘Someone You Loved’. As the perfect showcase for his sweeping, emotive and unbelievably powerful voice, the song has proved a tonic to the jangled emotions of music lovers worldwide, especially here in Australia.

Capaldi’s other singles have also managed to hit every nerve on the way through. In fact, his debut track ‘Bruises’, written as he recovered from a particularly nasty breakup, went absolutely bananas upon release in 2017 as it clocked up 28 million Spotify streams and made him the fastest unsigned artist ever to reach 25 million plays on the platform.

A prodigy from the get-go, Capaldi grew up in Bathgate – a small town near Glasgow – and was busy learning the drums and guitar by the age of two. Naturally, by the time he was nine, a young Lewis was seen sneaking into local pubs and blowing patrons away with his astonishing talents.

From there he honed his craft, letting his brothers record collection (filled with the best of Nirvana and Bob Dylan) influence him and building his own musical sensibilities. His penchant for sparse, emotionally resonant songcraft attracted attention as he distributed demo recordings of himself playing in a bathroom, eventually catching the ears of a curious local scene.

Flash forward a couple of years and we will find Lewis Capaldi hitting Australia in the middle of an absolute hot streak. Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent outsold the rest of the UK top 10 combined upon release last month also saw him nominated for The Brit’s Critics Choice award.

We caught up with Nick Charles to talk about guitars 

What was the first guitar you ever owned? Tell us about how you got it.

My first guitar was a Maton classical nylon string which I confiscated from my sister! This was about 1970. I tortured that poor instrument trying to sound like Clapton, Green and Robert Johnson to no avail. I finally ruined it by putting on steel strings and tuning it up for slide.

What was the first song you ever learned to play?

Wait for it – “Hang down your head Tom Dooley” still a good song isn’t it. Nothing like a murder ballad for a teenager.

If you could add any guitar to your collection what would it be and why?

I’d like a 50’s D18 thanks and/or anything that sounded like early Merle Travis.

Who do you think are the top three male guitarists in the world?

Only three? I could name 300 at least but let’s go with Martin Taylor, Bill Frisell and Tony Rice.

Who are the Top Three female guitarists?

Maybe Rory Block, Mary Flower and Sharon Isbin.

If you could design your own custom guitar what features would it have?

I’d like a classic sunburst OM size with mahogany back and sides, Sitka spruce top, ebony fret board, Waverley tuners. Hey, just like Maton made for me!

If you could play a gig alongside any guitarist ( alive or dead) who would it be?

Perhaps Martin Taylor , for the lesson I’d learn if I could follow it. Sitting in on a shuffle with Eric would be nice too.

Five musicians you’d invite to dinner and why?

I think Keith would be a beauty, although he’d arrive late. Ry Cooder seems to know everything so he’d be good. Ralph McTell is a great dinner guest. Daniel Baremboim for an absolute genius and he could explain his book to me! And then someone completely wacky like Kirk from Metallica! Quite a mix, I’d buy a dinner ticket.

We caught up with Minnie Marks to talk guitars 

What was the first guitar you ever owned? Tell us about how you got it.

The first guitar I ever owned myself was a black cheapo steel string in the local music shop for $210. My folks saw that I had fallen for this black beast and cut me a deal – to go halves in payment with me. So i dusted my Nan’s house about 5 times a day (even when it didn’t need dusting, thanks Nan) collected $110 in gold coins and marched into the music shop to claim my new six string wooden friend. I was chuffed.

What was the first song you ever learned to play?
Hmm…. maybe Sunshine Of  Your Love or Come As You Are by Nirvana.

If you could add any guitar to your collection what would it be and why?
Iwould love a resonator from ‘Mule’ or something with gold foils in it. It’s a unique sound that i’d like to play a bit more slide with.

Who do you think are the top three male guitarists in the world?
Tricky question! I’m a massive fan of Joey Landreth for sweet slide, Lloyd Spiegel for annihilating any blues song and Monte Montgomery for his different approach to acoustic guitar.

Who are the Top Three female guitarists?
Definitely Julz Parker – Australia’s own, one of the most musical guitarists I’ve ever heard. Bonnie Raitt – for her slinky slide playing and milking of the notes. Jennifer Batten! I had the pleasure of teaching a week long guitar course with Jen and man can she play!

If you could design your own custom guitar what features would it have?

An acoustic that the G string would never break on.

If you could play a gig alongside any guitarist ( alive or dead) who would it be?
Bonnie Raitt or Joey Landreth. I would be as happy as a pig in ….

Five musicians you’d invite to dinner and why?
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, so she could make it rain. Neil Young because he has a heart of gold. Jimi Hendrix because he’d never take the thigh only a little wing. Prince because there’d be no dessert without cream. And the Hussy Hicks because it’s never a party without
those ratbags.

We caught up with Simon Hosford to talk guitars 

What was the first guitar you ever owned? Tell us about how you got it.

The first guitar that I ever owned was a Yamaha nylon string classical guitar that I got when I was five, and in fact I still have it! My first electric guitar wasn’t until I was 12 years old, and that was a black Squier Stratocaster. After a year or so, I ended up putting in a humbucker and “ Washburn Wonderbar” locking tremolo system.

What was the first song you ever learned to play?

Hmmm.. first “Riff” might have been the Theme from Peter Gunn. First song.. geez that’s tough, maybe something like The Morning Has Broken, or Lemon Tree, or something like that.

If you could add any guitar to your collection what would it be and why?

I’d love to add an old 50’s or early Strat, for it’s nostalgia, and that it was the first electric guitar I fell in love with.

Who do you think are the top three male guitarists in the world?

If I had to only pick 3, It would have to be these 3.

If you could design your own custom guitar what features would it have?

I DID! Haha… it was a Super Strat, themed and coloured “Scuderia Rosso” like a Ferrari 458, complete with a headstock shaped like a Ferrari, carbon fiber touches, and custom Yellow Humbucker to represent the brake pads. (and yes, it was fast lol)

If you could play a gig alongside any guitarist (alive or dead) who would it be?

I’m fortunate enough to have played alongside Tommy Emmanuel, which is an incredible honour. If I had to choose another it would be Eddie Van Halen.

Five musicians you’d invite to dinner and why?

Alive or Dead, I assume?

• Jimi Hendrix (to root the conversation at the beginning of rock’n’roll)

• Miles Davis (to bring a tough attitude, and keep it real with lots of swearing)

• David Lee Roth (for the wit, wisecracks and laughs)

• Steve Lukather (for being the great raconteur that he is)

• Prince (to ground everything in coolness and understatement)

We caught up with Jeremy Barnes to talk guitars 

What was the first guitar you ever owned? Tell us about how you got it.

The first guitar that I actually bought myself was a Yamaha RGX 312. What drew me to it was a couple of things, 1. It had a pointy headstock, which at the time was very cool, and 2. And even more importantly, it had a whammy bar, which I thought was the best thing ever. It was also red so what was not to love for a 16 year old kid. I did all kinds of odd jobs around all my parents friend’s houses like mowing lawns and fixing stuff to save up for it and when I finally got it I didn’t even have enough for a case to go with it but I couldn’t wait any more (so my Dad had to chip in for the case).

What was the first song you ever learned to play?

The first song I ever taught myself was Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. There were probably a bunch of other little snippets before that but that’s the first song I remember sitting down and going ‘I’m not going to move until I learn this whole song’. I had been playing for about 3 months at that point so I was pretty pumped when I got through it.

If you could add any guitar to your collection what would it be and why?

Well I would pretty much stick to what I like in a guitar, so I would probably get someone like Charles Cilia to build me a super strat with some kind of buck eyed burl finish with humbuckers you can split for versatility in tones, with a tremel-no type system where you have the option of floating or fixed trem system with a reverse start style headstock and an on board boost system like the EMG afterburner. A guitar like that would pretty much do whatever I needed it to depending on what the gig was.

Who do you think are the top three male guitarists in the world?

That’s always a tough question and my answer would change depending on what day you asked me. So today I guess my answer would be;

Guthrie Govan – very versatile and can play basically anything

Greg Howe – I love his style, note choice and groove, great fusion player

Daniele Gottardo – He has a great handle on so many styles and is a monster player and composer.

Who are the Top Three female guitarists?

Again a tough question which changes regularly, todays answer,

Jennifer Batten – amazing player and pioneer in the two handed tapping technique which I’m a big fan of.

Lari Basillio – Great sense of melody and groove love her playing.

Sarah Longfield – great composer and very clever guitarist.

If you could design your own custom guitar what features would it have?

I know this is the same answer as above, but I guess I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to guitars so I would stay with what I love in a guitar and get someone like Charles Cilia to build me a super strat with some kind of buck eyed burl finish with humbuckers you can split for versatility in tones, with a tremel-no type system where you have the option of floating or fixed trem system with a reverse start style headstock and an on board boost system like the EMG afterburner. I believe a guitar like that would get me out of trouble in pretty much all musical situatuons.

If you could play a gig alongside any guitarist ( alive or dead) who would it be?

For the ‘no longer with us’ option for me it would be Shawn Lane, he was such an incredible player technically but that never got in the way of him writing beautiful music.

The living option, I would love to jam with Guthrie Govan, I think that would be inspiring and also fun, which is why we play music in the first place.

Five musicians you’d invite to dinner and why?

Another question that would change daily for me

Steve Lukather for the stories

Steve Vai because he has a lot of great insight into the whole guitar/music industry

Joe Satriani because that’s where it all started for me

Paul Gilbert because again, he was a huge early influence

Keith Richards can you imagine the stories that guy has!!! Would make for an interesting night.

In a double bill that will be hard to surpass, Perth Prog royalty VOYAGER & CHAOS DIVINE are on tour across Australia in July 2019 – and today, they are announcing the legends that will join them locally to make these shows even more prog-perfect.

Other than Brisbane, where both bands are playing Dead of Winter Festival, the remaining shows in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth will get some absolute top-class prog power to kick off the shows. Rock/djent outfit JAPAM will open up proceedings in Adelaide at Jive, Figures will take the stage first in Melbourne at The Workers Club, Central Coast up-and-comers Reliqa open in Sydney at Crowbar Sydney and hometown heroes Nucleust will support in Perth at Jack Rabbit Slims.

It’s been a busy start to 2019 for both bands, with VOYAGER releasing single Brightstar – their first musical offering under new label Season of Mist, toured alongside Twelve Foot Ninja and put in two stellar performances at 2019’s Download Festival Sydney and Melbourne – and with the promise of a new album not far off, things can only get bigger and better for Voyager.

Perth’s enigmatic prog metal five-piece CHAOS DIVINE have well and truly immersed themselves in a realm of sound and style matched by few, and admired by many. They recently dropped their new single ‘Unspoken’ alongside a beautiful animated video – the single reached #6 on the Australian iTunes metal charts and was added to Spotify’s international playlists New Metal Tracks and Progressive Metal, as well as Australian list Homegrown & Heavy. They also dropped their new single False Flags this week!
