Just 90-minutes South-West of Melbourne, perched on the edge of the Otway’s, By The Meadow, is tucked away amongst a gathering of rolling lush Bambra hills. The rugged bushland plays host to the festival’s 6^th instalment of music, camping and good times from Friday 29 – Sunday 31 March 2019.

With a stellar lineup already announced, By The Meadow couldn’t resist inviting more of their favourite local artists to the line up and are pleased to announce Fraser A. Gorman, Holiday Sidewinder, Bananagun, Obscura Hail, Yi-Lynn and Santa Fe Driving Range plus “The Spaces Between” DJs David Boyd Smiley and Hnymlk, have all accepted their invitations.

This year in partnership with Forte Magazine, By The Meadow opened up a set time giving an opportunity for an emerging artist from the Geelong/Surf Coast/Otways to score themselves a spot on the line up. An overwhelming amount of applications left Forte and the Festival organisers the hard task of shortlisting before selecting local modern rock folk outfit Grand Pine (with roots in Ocean Grove) to play alongside this year’s menagerie of artists.

The festivals stage manager’s old man runs a pub down in Aireys Inlet. A few years back they started brewing as Salt Brewing Co out the back of the bar and asked us shortly afterwards if we’d pour it at the festival. Ever since they’ve thrown a few kegs in the Ute and trekked up the gravel track to By The Meadow. Salt Brewing Co is a dedicated supporter of Australian produce, they’re passionate about brewing and there’s no bullshit. Pop by the bar for a cold one.

Heroes Vineyard – Wines that naturally reflect their origins – Pennyroyal
‘Heroes’ Vineyard was born out of a desire to make wines of the best possible quality without compromise and using non-interventionist methods – Wines that stand up on their own merits, truly reflecting their terroir.”

The Paella Guy – Spanish recipes, local seafood – Apollo Bay
Nathan’s aka The Paella Guy has been making waves at The Apollo Bay seafood festival with a traditional paella recipe learned and developed during time spent living in Spain. The catch is all local, with Squid, fish and Portarlington’s famous mussels, served fresh with lemons from his own backyard. A Vegan edition is also available.

Tin Can Alley – Specialty coffee, tasty toasties and locally loaded fries – Lorne
Fred’s a regular at By The Meadow. Scroll back through our photo albums of years gone by to catch him busting a move in the front row with the rest of our punters. This year you’ll no doubt find him up the front again, but he’ll also be manning the old caravan serving up the speciality Kazbah coffee that’ll drag you out of bed in the morning. Kazbah Coffee; is roasted 5 minutes up the road in the tiny township of Birregurra.

Keep an eye out for Fred’s toasties and custard stuff donuts from Great Ocean Road Bakehouse as well as loaded fries topped with mountains of caramelised onion, Barongarook chorizo and Shulz Dairy fetta.

Pete’s Woodfire Pizza – We surf the slice – Aireys Inlet
Pete, an Aireys Inlet local, a keen surfer, a pizza fanatic. He built his first woodfire oven around the same time By The Meadow started and has been serving up incredibly tasty pizza ever since. Crispy bases with quality toppings lightly charred around the edges. Super simple. Super delicious.

Smoothie Tank – Two sisters blending up plant-based delight – Torquay
Tanika and Renae are a couple of sisters from the Surf Coast who specialise in healthy and delicious smoothie bowls and juices. Supporting local farmers and growers when possible all whilst maintaining a minimal footprint on the environment.

Triage, out now via Dot Dash / Remote Control, is Methyl Ethel’s third album. It was written, produced and performed by Jake Webb, mixed by Marta Salogni and mastered by Heba Kadry. The album was recorded in Webb’s home studio in West Perth.

Methyl Ethel is the musical project of Jake Webb. As a live band it expands to a five piece and includes Thom Stewart, Chris Wright, Lyndon Blue and Jacob Diamond. Methyl Ethel has enjoyed phenomenal successes over the last years. In their home country of Australia, ‘Ubu’ became an ARIA Accredited Gold single earlier this year off the back of landing at #4 in triple j’s 2017 Hottest 100. My Dream Rider by Kingswood

Kingswood are currently recording their third LP, rumors circulating gossip dive bars by an ever growing pool of fired studio interns indicate that the bands new music is so grand and beautiful that it will both aid you in falling in love, and mend a broken heart.

The Hills Are Alive is a 3-day, 2-night boutique music and camping festival for good-vibing, music-loving folk. It takes place in the beautifully picturesque rolling Hills of South Gippsland near Loch Village, 90mins from Melbourne, 25mins from Inverloch, 35mins from Phillip Island. Good times with great people in a stunning location.

This year will be the eleventh incarnation of THAA. Legs eleven, we’re going to heaven.

The enigmatic Martika has today announced her debut single How Did I Get Here, a thoughtful, soulful track that explores the difficulties of chasing dreams, out March 15.

How Did I Get Here is a mellow, contemplative track, with an undeniable groove and stunning, eclectic vocals. The chorus refrain, ‘How did I get here? Am I coming, or going?’ is sung so earnestly; it’s impossible to ignore the pleading in Martika’s voice. Gentle yet driving percussion percolates underneath a constant, melodic bassline, as organ and synthesisers swirl together with unexpected and satisfying harmony. Fans of Aurora and Massive Attack will love Martika’s incisive style.

How Did I Get Here tackles the complexities of turning a passion into a career, as Martika explains, “This song explores the emotional journey of an artist; that lost feeling of being at a crossroads in life. I was unsure of which way to go. I found myself reflecting on my life and where I was, thinking that music should have brought me success at this point – and was it all worth it? It was then the decision of whether to keep on walking down the hard road, striving to make my passion a career or to take the easy road and find stability. This song has helped me vent the frustration of what a struggling artist goes through, and has helped me find the strength to carry on.”

Martika is set to perform How Did I Get Here for a hometown crowd in Melbourne on Thursday, April 11 at The Toff in Town. Thrilled to be showcasing new music as well as her exciting new single, Martika gives fans an insight into what to expect at her shows, as she says, “Audiences can expect something entertaining and amazing, yet a show that makes everyone feel equal and at home – a family. I myself love going to a show where, as an audience member, you feel like a part of a community and united, rather than fighting for a spot in a crowd.”

Martika is a natural-born performer; first discovering her passion for singing as a young child, dancing around the house to Disney soundtracks. Highly disciplined and passionate about performing, she spent most weeknights during childhood at singing lessons, piano lessons, dance classes spanning a wide variety of genres – and she even completed a degree in musical theatre upon finishing high school. Since her move to Melbourne from her country home town, Martika began gigging professionally and working alongside local label True Music (Shelley Segal, MAYA) and producer/composer Rob Upward. She spends her days in the studio, writing and growing creatively as a songwriter and artist. With so much talent to share, Martika is surely one new artist to watch.

SLEEPER RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN 21 YEARS

‘THE MODERN AGE’ OUT 22ND MARCH

In March 2019, Sleeper release their first album in 21 years, The Modern Age. It wasn’t meant to happen. In fact, the band had promised each other it never would. ‘I sold my drum kit two months before we reformed,’ Andy Maclure says, ruefully. ‘It was taking up too much space in the attic. A few weeks later, Lou comes off the phone and says, ‘we’re playing to two thousand people next month, you better go and buy back those drums.”

Sleeper enjoyed huge critical and commercial success in the mid 90s: achieving 8 Top 40 singles across 3 Top 10 albums with well over 1,000,000 sales. They garnered front covers across the music press and appeared numerous times on key music shows of the era; including Top Of The Pops; an episode of which Louise Wener presented.

Together, they toured to sell-out crowds in the UK, US and Japan and played the main stages of Reading and Glastonbury. They toured with Blur, supported REM at Milton Keynes Bowl and toured the US with Elvis Costello, who later recorded a version of their top ten hit, What Do I Do Now? Their music was characterized by astute, observational lyrics and big, hook driven melodies. Wener was an iconic front-person, heading up a movement that brought women center stage in guitar music.

Sleeper split In 1998 and walked purposely away from the limelight. Wener carved out a career as a successful novelist, publishing her auto-biography, Different for Girls in 2010. Maclure and John Stewart – Sleeper’s guitarist – both became lecturers in music studies with Stewart recently completing his PhD.

In February, 2017 Sleeper were invited to headline the Starshaped Music festival: four gigs in four cities, a celebration of all things 90s and Britpop. ‘We’d get these offers every so often,’ Wener says, ‘and I’d always ignore them. This time I didn’t. It was a timing thing. I’d just turned 50, and someone very close to me had just become very sick. I had a powerful sense of time passing. A sudden impulse to step out of my comfort zone. Four gigs and that would be that. I just wanted to know if I could do it. “

With Kieron Pepper, previously of The Prodigy, joining on bass, Sleeper decided to play a few more dates. They followed their triumphant festival return with a sold out headline gig at Shepherd’s Bush Empire and a sold-out UK tour followed. ‘The reaction was so joyful,’ Wener says of these dates. ‘There was a strong sense of camaraderie in the crowd, it felt like we were all sharing a moment. Everyone in the band wanted to carry on playing but we weren’t sure it made sense without recording new material.’

The band spent summer 2018 recording The Modern Age with their long time producer, Stephen Street – a relationship that clicked into place again right away. They tracked live at Metway studios in their adopted city of Brighton, before decamping to Street’s studio in West London to add the finishing touches.

Initially the plan was to re-work a tranche of material from the early post-Sleeper period when the band found themselves holed up in George Michael’s North London Studio, recording demos for an unreleased album. But Wener soon decided the material needed to be brand new.

‘I wanted this album to reflect a moment in time,’ Wener says, “the songs and lyrics needed to reflect who I am now and the world we find ourselves in. First single, Look at You Now is a protest song. Initially it seems like it’s referencing our comeback, but it’s a howl for the politically homeless, in a landscape where reasoned debate has given way to vitriol. Musically we looked to fuse childhood 80s sonics with the quiet menace of a John Carpenter soundtrack.” In The Sun Also Rises, Wener offers hope and positivity after personal loss, the music combining elements of 5th Dimension and The Happy Mondays, to give the record its most uplifting moment.

Brisbane’s melodic hardcore quartet She Cries Wolf took the Australian Heavy Music scene by surprise late in February with the surprise-release of their third full-length ‘Liar’! Teasing the record anonymously with the hashtag #everyonelovestheliar in the weeks prior, they unleashed it on February 22.
