TURPENTINE

This was the last addition to the album. I was trying to see how far I could go with chord voicings in one song. The verse is all in G but I keep gradually changing the shape to give it emotion and interest while the bass and drums keep locked into a tight rhythm. Trying to find that sweet spot between really sharp glassy chord changes and fuzzy angry lead lines was really fun.

BODY N SOUL

I found the fragment of the idea for this one at a friend’s house. He was borrowing a Moog Little Phatty and I was strumming along on an acoustic while he bounced between D and A. Really simple stuff, but I loved the simplicity of it. Definitely aligns with the lyrical content of living minimally. I also loved the idea of the song starting and ending with discordant merry-go-round chords.

1ST WORLD BROTHERS

This is just a song about 21st century white boys.
I listen to heaps of Spiritualised, and I wanted to try my hand at a drowsy space rock sound. Big guitars drenched in verb, everything hanging around a little bit too long. I knew this one had to feature acoustic guitar all the way through to give it that percussive
mantra.

STRAY DOG

I really wanted to try and write a psychedelic Motown song. With that classic four to the floor rhythmic push. Think Four Tops ‘I’ll Be There’. So that’s where the initial beat and dramatic chorus chords/melody came from.  The actual lyrics are essentially coming from times when I’ve felt so stuck in a place and need a release. The chopping changing between 5/4 and 7/4 I think add to that claustrophobic energy

Live Review: Bruce Dickinson Speaking Tour

Bruce Dickinson – What does this button do? Speaking Tour The Palais Melbourne

Starting from humble beginnings of being expelled from his mother in a shock surprise to being expelled from Private school ,  where he was described as having ‘ His tongue will be his undoing‘ by teachers Bruce has done it all.

From lead singer of of iconic heavy metal band Iron Maiden to commercial airline pilot,  brewing his own brand of beer, and starting his own airline Bruce has never been one to live life in the slow lane.

Opening the show by lobbing out a dozen tennis balls into the crowd  and proving he has a pretty good throwing arm Bruce breaks the ice with his candid humor the moment he walks on the stage, beer in hand.  He is automatically disarmingly funny.

Talking about his early beginnings in school, to his first band Samson featuring a gimp mask wearing drummer, to joining Iron Maiden one gets the feeling that Bruce has lived his life telling anyone that didn’t quite agree with him to fuck off,  including his 2015 throat cancer diagnosis.

He tells each tale with passion, excitement and the ability to laugh at himself and quite frequently.  Pacing the stage and speaking at lightening speed Bruce has a lot to say, but not quite enough time to say it as the evening rushes by far too quickly.  His stories of private school life to almost getting busted for drugs on the M1 had everyone laughing, as Bruce is an exceptional public speaker and his delivery is well timed and on- point.

The first half over and there is a short break before Q & A time. It seems there are a bunch of aviation geeks in the building as there are so many questions about aircraft and flying, and this leads to some pretty interesting stories.

Finishing the evening by reading an exert from the book Bruce has spoken about his roller coaster journey through life and what an incredible journey he’s had- tight trousers and all.  A thoroughly entertaining evening of laughs, and insight to an iconic musician.

Bruce Dickinson’s book What does this button do? Is available now.

SUN SHEDDING (EARLY BIRD OVERTURE)

I knew that I wanted to use an inter-galactic street fighter guitar lead tone for this piece. We went out of our way to make far-out harmonies of the lead line and throw phaser all over the track. So that after listening to the classic rock styles heard in the opening track it would make you rethink all your preconceived ideas of what the album would be.

Live Gallery: Dimmu Borgir

Dimmu Borgir

170 Russell, Melbourne

The Norwegian lords of symphonic Black metal left Oslo to venture to Australia after more than 7 years of silence. Like the volcanic formation the band is named for they erupted on stage among the mist to deliver to the Melbourne audiences a performance like no other.

PREMEDITATIONS

I wanted the title track to almost come across as a theme song for the album, in a cheesy but still Rock N Roll way. I’ve taken a pretty serious Chicago-blues trope and shoved it out of its comfort zone. This is the first instance where you can hear the radio signal that my guitar pedals were picking up. It bookends the entire album.

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Originally, I was going to put out a 7” record, with a song called ‘Turnstile’ and a track that isn’t on the album, called ‘Every Time It Rains’. I started writing a bunch of ideas around the time that we were recording that were all loosely thematic and slowly I knew that I needed to pursue a bigger body of work. I ended up releasing ‘Every Time It Rains’ as a single and kept ‘Turnstile’ for the album. It can be found on Side B of Premeditations. What came next was an album full of sci-fi conspiracies, lots of phaser n fuzz and 70’s harmonies.

So take a listen as Lachlan X. Morris takes you through the new album over the weekend as we give you an exclusive sneak peek where Lachlan X. Morris explains the inspiration for each song.
