Every not-so-often somebody comes up with an event concept which stands out. Whether it’s because of its sheer quirkiness (legit or created) or its white stellar brilliance, it breaks away from a crowed entertainment field of cow-grazing sameness.
27 Club. Holy hell, almost literally.
Princess Theatre at Woolloongaba, Friday night four days into April, showcased the 27 Club. Slightly obscure in mainstream conversation, but fiercely up-talked in musical urban folklore is the notion of an informal list consisting mostly of popular musos who died at age 27. It (the list) gets conveniently swelled by adding celebs, actors and anybody with a touch of notoriety at that age. The reality is we do lose some amazing artists – but not because there’s a curse, more often about the eventual effects of risky lifestyles.

Onstage at the Princess, the exceptionally talented live band provided for a rotating schedule of singers, the backing of songs from 27 Club members. Artists such as Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and a tribute to blues artist Robert Johnson. The lighting, as always at the Princess – was sensational, coupled with massive floor to ceiling backdrops of the artists who made the songs famous.  It was a celebration of great memories was the atmosphere on this night.

Brisbane came alive on December 8, 2024, as the Good Things Festival delivered a day packed with exhilarating performances and unforgettable moments. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Brisbane Showgrounds, the festival brought together a stellar lineup of iconic acts and rising stars, proving why it’s a must-attend event for music lovers across Australia.

The day started with dynamic performances by emerging talents like Alex Lahey and AViVA, whose fresh sounds set the tone for an exciting lineup. Their energetic sets showcased Australia’s thriving music scene, giving fans plenty to cheer about from the start.

As the afternoon progressed, the stages lit up with powerhouse performances. Electric Callboy and Northlane delivered high-octane sets with fans moshing and singing along, their energy infecting the crowd. Meanwhile, the nostalgic sounds of Jet, celebrating the 20th anniversary of Get Born, had the audience belting out classics like “Are You Gonna Be My Girl.”

Headliners Korn provided the perfect crescendo to the day, celebrating three decades of their iconic sound. From the opening riff to the final encore, their performance was a masterclass in nu-metal brilliance, with tracks like “Freak on a Leash” and “Falling Away From Me” igniting the crowd.

Other highlights included the soul-stirring folk-punk anthems of Violent Femmes, the thunderous metal grooves of Mastodon, and the infectious punk rock of Bowling for Soup, who brought humour and heart to their long-awaited return to Australian stages.

For those seeking something unique, Billy Corgan’s solo set offered a reflective and intimate counterpoint to the festival’s more boisterous acts. His collaboration with The Delta Riggs added a local flavour to his deeply personal performance.

The atmosphere at the Brisbane Showgrounds was electric throughout the day. Fans of all ages came together, united by their love of music. The festival organisers excelled in creating a seamless experience, from the stage setups to the food and beverage options, ensuring attendees could focus on the incredible music.
Good Things Festival 2024 wasn’t just a concert but a celebration of music’s ability to bring people together, transcend genres, and create unforgettable memories. With a lineup this diverse and a crowd this enthusiastic, it’s clear that Good Things has cemented itself as a highlight of Australia’s live music calendar.
